The Elon Musk route

Well, it appears SpaceX never actually got back to Chuck. But Chuck is not one to get discouraged by these little details. Obviously for Chuck, who is no stranger to getting rejected, the next choice clearly is to fulfill his dream anyway by building his own rocket. It sounds like another typical Chuck Adventure, but it is actually not too far fetched.
Luckily for us space nerds, there are a lot of dreamers and inventors out there who actually their big crazy dreams come into reality. Of course, it helps when they are a lot smarter than Chuck and actually have a lot of funding.
In a recent interview I watched with Elon Musk, he said that his original idea was just trying to find a way to increase NASA’s budget so we start thinking about going to Mars again. Long story short, he eventually decided to just start building rockets himself.

I find the stories and ideas surrounding SpaceX fascinating. I think if SpaceX came knocking at my door, I’d take the job in a heartbeat. As far as actually flying to Mars goes, I am good with waiting until they get established there, have hot showers and start selling cold beer. I bet a cold beer after flying through space for 7 months would taste really good.

    Detractors, not retractors. 😉

Thanks, Michael! It was correct in the script, but I managed to mess it up when typing it into the bubble… 🙂

Actually, Chuck’s concept isn’t that wrong! In the 1970s, there was a German private company named OTRAG which developed and built a light-payload rocket to launch small satellites. Their concept was bundeling a number of small rocket engines, suitable for mass production and thus cheap to produce. They also used proven, yet cheap components wherever they could (windshield wiper motors as fuel valve actuators). They were ridiculed, but actually managed to get some test flights done. The project was cancelled when the lease for their proving grounds were cancelled.
