Progress is not linear

Chuck sure drops some deep wisdom every now and then. I’m a bit caught in the rat race the last few years, so it feels like I don’t have the opportunity to really focus on learning or practicing something to a significant degree. But I sure know the feeling when something suddenly just clicks and all the effort of previous days, months or years suddenly pays off. One of the best feelings in the world! An interesting subvariant of that phenomenon is “sleeping on it”. That works surprisingly well when learning an instrument. It keeps happening to me that I suddenly can play something that I was struggling with the day before. The trick seems to be to struggle long and concentrated enough for the brain to really work on it during sleep.

I’m sure all of you have similar experiences or stories!

  1. Works the same with learning a new language. You get frustrated that you’re stuck at a level then, suddenly, the next day you’re at the next level and doing great. Lasts for a while until you start getting ready for the next level-up.
