When the Texas Air National guard had a certain politician as a member, the “instument test” was to whiitewash the canopy and then using the nice orage ball radar to fly from somewhere near Houston to Florida and land, while never seeing out of the cockpit.
Oh, and the plane used was known to kill pilots for spite (one of the planes earning a “widow Maker” moniker and also known as “The Lawn Dart”)

My grandfather ended up a bombardier because he couldn’t keep the B-24 level using the instruments.

He was squadron lead bombardier over Normandy on D-Day. He has interesting stories.

Chuck really isn’t himself today. Not only does he manage a good landing, he even remembers to open his response with a polite “thanks” – normally he would only be swearing at the d_mn_d hood since short final, or even before.
