What I did today...Salmon Bake and Vintage planes! (pics!)
« on: July 29, 2007, 02:50:46 AM »
The Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum had it's Annual Salmon Bake and Vintage Aircraft fly by.  Besides their excellent exhibits (some of which have been recently renovated and some that are just plain NEW to me) many of their aircraft were available to look at and a few flew.  The aircraft that flew were their Grumman Goose, Grumman Super Widgeon, Stinson, and Stearman.  A Taylorcraft DCO 65 was going to fly, but lost power momentarily on takeoff and the pilot was able to set it down succesfully in the remaining runway length.  I talked with him after and he said it was developing normal power then all of a sudden silence, then power again.  Very wise to put it down rather then try to fly it out!  Also I met the daughter of Don Sheldon....she's also the grandaughter of Bob Reeve and a talented photographer and wood burning artist.  Nice work!  Anyway, here are a few pics.  First up the Goose Taxing out of the water:

Now the Goose in Flight:

Now the Queen of Dago Lake (A OA-10 Catalina...not exactly a PBY):

The Boeing/Stearman (It did it's flyby JUST as we got there before I could get my camera out!):

The Super Widgeon:

And the Taylorcraft:

I've got some more pics if anyone is interested.

The average pilot, despite the sometimes swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. These feelings just don't involve anyone else.
