Thats Flightsim 9 (2004) with Ultimate Terrain USA, Alaska/Canada and treegen (more trees) It runs well on my antique computer so at the moment I'm not going to switch to FS 10 (X)

Cool, that's the one I've got.  Sounds like I need to download some upgrades to it.

Heck, Phil.... I've even got one of your neighbors (sort of)

You might recognize the airport in the background.... It's in your neck of the woods. the default Microsoft scenery really messed it up but Ultimate Terrain is much more accurate.

PS: I've also got another one of you neighborhood airplanes as well

Looks like Chena Marina in the background.  Now I'm curious how Lakloey looks (AK22).

Yep, It's Chena Marina... The default scenery has the runway on the wrong side of the float pond... I fixed that with a scenery program I have. Lakloey is ok.. has the wrong runway type (paved) and is missing the float pond I can see in google earth. Heck send me some pictures of the Field and I might be able to whip something up for you that at least approximates your home airport.... Maybe we could have a virtual fly in at Phil's house  ::rofl::

I found this forum after google searching about this crash.  I built the power plant at the mine this plane crashed at.  I received quite a bit of freight off of this aircraft during construction last summer.  The strip is much longer than the 1500 feet stated here.  C-130's landed 30+ times while I was there last summer.  The rock pile on the south end is a problem, that said, Hercs, DC-6's, DC-4's land there frequently.  I have some photos of the crash of the DC-4 earlier this year that was en route to the mine.  I've attached them to this post.  I will get photos of the Carvair eventually, I will be sure to share them here.

Thanks for the info.  I was just going off a newspaper report as well as the AFD (which says 1510ft).   Can you give us an actual length?

I'll see if I can get some aerial photos for you.  The float pond shape has changed over the years and I don't think the google earth photos are correct anymore.  Part of the pond is still an active gravel pit after all.  The runway hasn't changed much, other than more houses around it.  It's currently 4,200ft, gravel, except for the east 900ft which is grass.

Tundra and I HAVE been inside that Carvair.  Was interesting to say the least.  The placards were VERY inereresting :P  Got a few pics. Sorry the bird got busted up.  A true loss to all us aviation bums.  That's the problem with aviation today.  So many USEFUL planes are decades old and are aviation history.  Short of a C-130/L-100 name me a plane that could take the place of a Carvair!  Nobody appreciaties what they got till it's gone....(yes you 80's history/music buffs ought to get THAT reference)

Edit those fotos are from a differnet crash...the Carvair was white and blue not white and orange though I recognize the fotos.  If  the C-46 is 1822M let me tell you a story.....

The average pilot, despite the sometimes swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Music reference?   ???

Other than an L-100 / whatever the version Lyndon has is called (1090 or something) / C-130....  How about an AN-24?

The thing is, the mission on that flight was something that they didn't need a carvair for.  Of course, I don't blame them for actually using it, since it was the only thing they had availible.

Just wish it hadn't been.

Quite much smaller design... and it is becoming history as well...

Bringing this back up to the top to report that Brooks has been flying another ex tanker DC-4 they've acquired.   The tail damaged one is still sitting there, although they are apparently going to repair it (seems it needs "extensive" sheet metal work).

In other news:  Apparently Everts just acquired a DC-6 that formerly belonged to Howard Hughes.  It's been sitting by the old Aerofuel hanger for the last week or so,  still has the passenger windows in it and is supposed to be a very low time airframe.
