Frustration

Last week Aegean Airlines in Greece announced a job offer to man their new A320s with First offices

Today, a second company (Canadian-Greek seaplane airlines) announced that they plan to get a whole fleet of seaplanes in the next 5 years.. I'm sure they're looking for pilots too..

That said there's now a huge market for pilots in Greece! That has never happenned before and it will be a lot of years until that happens again, if ever..

I'm afraid I missed that train.. I don't think I can hope to start my training (for whatever licence except maybe ultralights) for at least 5 years, and even then I have to find a way to fund it..
So, if I'm to join the work-market being 30+ years old.. I kinda missed out..

Don't get me wrong, airlines are not my thing.. In fact my dream job would be flying in Alaska or Canada, or piloting an ambulance, doing something fulfilling and not just getting some company rich.. It's just frustrating to see such a once-in-a-century opportunity go by because I woke up when I was 25 and not before..

Of course, nothng is lost and the smile is still there on my face  ;)

No, nothing is lost at all, and you are plenty young to do whatever you wish to in your life.  I have a friend who started flying in her 40's, and she loved it so much she pursued it as a career.  Many people told her she was "nuts", but she followed her heart, and retired a couple years ago as a B-747 Captain with United.  She never looked back -- only forward.  I think of her as an amazing role model for all pilots.

Your attitude, and persistence, count for a LOT.   ::wave:: 

Oh, and have fun, too!!!    :D

Awsome mom!! I've got to go for truck training, and when I start working with it, I just might go back to flight school. Like the owner of our local flight school said, all his former students are getting jobs faster than every, even though they just recieved their commercial!
Remember all the baby boomers are retiring, which means all the airlines are pushing for pilots. Little bush companies and the like are needing pilots. I'm pushing 30 in a year and a half, and still might go for it.

Go Gilly Go!!  I'm the last one to offer advice (since I always need it!!), but I do believe life is short, and it is important to do something you ENJOY.  Of course, this doesn't always make much sense financially but what the hay -- at least I can smile while being broke.   ;D

I figure if you get tired of doing something you love, you can ALWAYS go find a job you hate that pays better, right?  Might as well have fun while you can!   :D

My company is finally starting to get a little short on resumes.  Not to the point of not being able to hire... but I think they'll be awfully close by the end of the year.


AirScorp:  I keep hearing that some European airlines are so strapped for pilots that they are paying for the training.... if that's true maybe you can look into that?

The closest I've heard is that they generally don't ask for a type rating now and are training you instead.. Something that happenned in the past but had stopped for some time now..
Still, they need a frozen ATPL..

But, by all means, look into it and let me know..

Several airlines here in Europe are able and willing to pay part of your training costs, provided you met their requirements and study at accredited flight school. You can cover rest of expenses by loan.

One of my friends (30yr old, by the way) is currently at Phoenix Goodyear Airport at the moment for initial SEP(L), MEP(L) and I think CPL with Oxford Aviation Training, being paid by Thomas Cook. He is expecting getting his 757 rating somewhere next year.

If you want to fly for a living--GO FOR IT TODAY--if you wait till tomorrow you'll just be one day older--don't try to predict whether you'll win or lose, the fact that you will be trying to follow your dreams makes you today's winner anyway!  |:)\

Sorry, I'm not in a good position to look into what the european airlines are doing... that's *your* job!


I seem to remember there's someone on this forum who is getting flight training paid by Luftansa right now.    Regardless, see what they'll provide, a loan to cover the rest might not be too hard to work out.

Thanks guys for all your replies, and if you have something to share please do..

Story is, until November last year, I didn't even know what General aviation was.. Since then I'm learning what I can off the net, hooking up with pilots, having conversations over coffee and bottles of beer (always good if you ask me :) ), having flights, and following every lead I can to learn and do more..
It has already changed my life a little and it's getting better every day.. Hey, I even found the motivation to study towards getting my college degree ::loony::

So let's have fun guys and don't mind me if sometimes I sound too serious..  ::rofl::
