Earthquake hits England

Coincidence?

I've read that they've updated it to a 5.0 (contrary to what the article says).

Pitures in the article.

Earthquake Shakes Southern England
Updated: 18:25, Saturday April 28, 2007

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 has damaged homes and disrupted power supplies in southern England.

Picture by Sky News reader Lawrence Arnold in FolkestoneFifty houses are so badly damaged that residents have been told they cannot return to them.

The British Geological Survey placed the epicentre of the quake 7.5 miles off the Dover coast.

Householders as far afield as East Sussex, Essex and Suffolk said they felt the tremor.

Walls cracked and chimneys toppled onto buildings and pavements in at least four streets in Folkestone.

A 30-year-old woman was taken to hospital with minor head and neck injuries.

Kent deputy chief fire officer Bill Feeley told Sky News: "Miraculously, we've had no more injuries than that."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was inundated with more than 200 emergency calls.

The US Geological Survey pinpoints the quakeThe incident is the largest recorded in Britain since an earthquake rocked Dudley in the West Midlands in 2002.

Kent Chief Superintendent Alasdair Hope warned people to "be vigilant" and report any suspected gas leaks or structural damage.

Dangerous property emergency number: 01303 853 566/853 567.

Local energy supplier EDF Energy reported that thousands of its customers had lost power. Supplies were later restored in the Folkestone and Dover areas.

Eurostar said the quake had not affected services across the Channel.

Residents said, when they heard the initial bang, they feared an explosion at the Dungeness nuclear power facility.

Damage after the tremorBill Byrne, 47, from Folkestone, said: "There was a big rumble and roar at about 8.15am - the noise that was coming from my roof felt like it had caved in.

"We all came out and looked around to inspect the roof and other people's roofs and at that point saw the destruction."

Jeff Stack, from Shepway District Council, told Sky News that building engineers will be checking properties in affected areas for structural damage for the next few days.

"We have about 50 properties where people are still in a position where they cannot re-occupy their homes. It is quite a significant operation," he said.

What he's referring to is  (by the was, girl,,,,,what the hell are you doing up this hour of the nite, HUH ?)  that out here on the sunset coast, he was "moved" to new emotional highs whenever he encountered the (ahem) local wildlife---dressed in appropriate bikinis............
Really though, we had a 4.3 day before yesterday that was  almost calamitous too---I ALMOST spilled some gin I was pouring when my wife yelled "WHAT WAS THAT?"  (she's scary when she yells !  ::eek::)  Other than that, nothing was damaged---kind of get used to it  ::sleep::

LANDINGS ::knockedout:: Those are called arrivals, and that's why I'm so unflappable in an earthquake ::wave::

Did I tell you this already -- last summer when we went into Northtown on an unbelievably hot, baking day...  we were all starved so ran up to that little cafe in the terminal building to grab some lunch before going back north...  the guys had on fire clothes and of course the spotter and I had hot flightsuits...  in a huge hurry.....

A very, very, very old lady was having lunch with her friends and asked me as we came in, "Oh dearie!  Are you a student pilot?"

We had a nice chat and of course the guys (all giggling at me) thought THAT was pretty funny, anyway, when we got back to Winnemucca, I was telling this to the SEAT guys and without missing a breath, when I mentioned her comment, they immediately said:

"GOOD GOD!!  HOW BAD WAS YOUR LANDING?!?!!!"

Buttheads.........   ::complaining:
Don't make me come back there!!!!

My first few months here were a testiment to the engineering of the landing gear on Beech 1900s.
