good luck man!!

Solo x/c's are awesome (although I was way to stressed on mine.... I tend to get lost while driving and wasn't sure if the same would happen in the air... ;) )

That's why I LOVE the D-> button on the GPS!!!  No matter where you go...there you are. (OK movie buffs...what movie was that from?)

that's from a movie?? ...hmmmm.

Don't wanna date myself, but when I first soloed. . . GPS wasn't around as much as it is now.
Thinking back, I don't know how I ever made it back because I grew quite fond of those handy little Gamin 420's we have in our helos. . .  ;)

The sky and land joined for one brief moment, then we flew - the ground a receding memory for just a little while.

I'm planning the first one as a trip from Lakeland(LAL) to Sebring(SEF) onto Venice(VNC) and back onto Lakeland. Total trip 170 NM give or take. What can I say, when I want to do something, I do it right. I recently got my hands on a Garmin GPS 195 for a song and dance. The seller only wanted 150 for it. As nice as it is though I only plan on turning it on if I feel that I'm way off course. Otherwise sticking primarily to Loran, VOR, ground ref and radar vectoring. Should be a piece of cake.

My flight school had 3 airplanes with GPS units of the entire fleet when I first soloed.  One was VFR only and only worked half the time or less anyway.  The other units worked, but instructors wouldn't let students use them while they were in the plane, and that was the 172s.  None of the 152s had a GPS and the VORs were iffy.   On a solo cross country you had good odds of not having a GPS... so you aren't dating yourself too much,  that was only a few years ago.  It's amazing (from my perspective) how fast it's taken off in the last 5 years.

Nice Job on the quote Switchtech!!!!  You and I must share the same sick sense of humour!!!

As for the GPS....it really is a cool toy, but during my training I tried REALLY HARD to NOT use it when I could.  I work on computers all day and was concerned that I would become too dependant on it.  During a cross country, I would set it....and forget it (sorry, couldn't resist that homage to Ron Popiel)...but seriously, I would lock in my destination then turn the viewer down and only refer to it once or twice to confirm my pilotage and DR skills with where I really was.

I am concerned about one day getting into one of those new fangled glass cockpit thingys.  I have a feeling I would end up reverting back to my MS Flight Sim days and start fixating on all the tv screens.  Hopefully I have been disciplining myself the right way (I don't use the automatic trim either...so I get used to being a "real pilot") I figure if all else fails I can always fall back on the tried and true manual skills.

See ya...

Loran, huh?  I hear that's coming back.  Maybe my wife can wear leg warmers again soon.   :P

It's nice not to have to rely on the GPS.  The day you really need it is the day it won't work.
