I got something to report as well. Ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to fly the UH-1H Huey. I watched every Vietnam movie there was just because of the Huey secenes they had in them (the favorite of course being the "ride of the valkuries" scene in "Apocalypse Now")
And last weekend, after being in helicopter aviation for 12 years now, I got to fly the UH-1H for the first time!!
WOW! What a machine! And I even got to do all the EP's including full touch-down autorotations!
I was stoked!

Time for celebration!!  ::drinking::  ::drinking::  ::wave::

That's really cool mike!    I've always been a big fan of the Huey myself.   When my navy friend had her winging ceremony (she's flying Seahawks in training right now) a few of the Marines in the class were going into UH-1s and AH-1s...   I profess enjoying huey scenes in movies as well.

HEY KW Congrats..|:)\..now you can buy the Chicken Wings solo shirt  :D!!!! 

I have 11.2 hrs up at the moment and haven't soloed yet.....maybe this weekend ;D......

Might have been able to solo at abut 10.5 or right at 11 unfortunately though the morning we launched initially Lakeland was swamped with traffic so rather than shooting a few touch and gos locally we had to fly to another airport about 5 minutes away. After about a half hour there and returning to Lakeland for a few more T and G's, Pat (my instructor) hoped out and away I went. Weight makes a huge difference I've learned as Pat weighs in at about 250 and I'm only 155/160 at best. The little Cessna climbed like a rocket and never wanted to come down (lot's o float with a STOL wing) Good times though, Good times.

My official Student license only came in the mail yesterday  ::complaining: i applied for it in DECEMBER!!!!  I don't know about the US but here in OZ you can learn to fly without your official SPL but you cannot go solo until you have it in your hands.  Now that i have it i suppose it is only down to my instructor  ::bow:: saying "Yes, you have the skills..NOW GO FOR IT!!!!  ::rofl:: ::rofl:: ::rofl::

Here you get your first medical with a student pilot's certificate (combination).   You can get subsequent ones with it as well if you don't have your private after the first one expires...

No waiting except to get an appointment with the doctor.


It's not a race to get there, just keep at it and enjoy it when the time comes!

Joy and Frustration in the same day.

Just landed after one more trip with the instructor and I've been given the thumbs up for trips to local airports withing 25 NM of Lakeland. Until today I could only do pattern work, which was cool, but now I can actually go somewhere. The frustration came though after the last landing and noticing that the artificial horizon has lost it's damn mind, indicating anything but level. A quick glance across the panel located the problem, or at least pointed toward the culprit, the suction gauge was reading an absolute 0. Damn! Looks like the pump might be kaput, the cowling is coming off this afternoon to find out for sure, but I might be o the ground for a few days. Highs and lows, take 'em as they come.

No, it's a UH-1H which now belongs to our sister company in Redding, CA. We just did some maintenance here and the school.

It's a restricted category Huey with a -703 engine in it, which makes it kind of a freak of nature because you are putting a 1800hp engine into an 1300hp transmission. Gives you higher altitude performance. Where we were flying (sea level), that engine was kind of just "loathing" the whole time which was great  ;D

The shaft did in fact shear off. It also managed to take about half the carbon vanes with it, the inside of the pump looked like a hand grenade had been placed there. It was well over its 500 hour mark so no real surprise that it failed. Replacement pump is on the way!  8)
