Actually no... I've just wasted too much of my life earning useless advanced degrees and working in higher ed.  One of the reasons I like being a part time flight instructor is that it frees me from all that.

Turbo, you have to understand government contracts.
The goal is to acquire the money from the government, not produce something useful.

Many of these one of a kind airplanes were how we learned what worked and what did not.
They did not have the understanding or computer modeling.
Just look how long it took to understand that fling faster than the speed of sound required different aircraft design.  NOT just more power.

Look at the wing designs in WWII.  The only way that those airplanes flew was stacking up enough radial engines to provide more power.

But look at the British designs especially the Supermaine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and the North American Mustang (build to a British design specification for use in the Battle of Britain). classic lines long wings for lift and designed to fight at altitude, OK except for the first Mustangs with the puny Alison engine (sorry to say that hope it wont get me banned).
