Some pics from this last weekend here in New Zealand. the Sport Aircraft association held its Annual Fly - In at Ashburton, near Christchurch in the South Island. I scrounged a ride with a friend in a somewhat "experienced" Jodel D11(100hp) as my machine wasnt ready to go. The trip from the Waikato (Central North Island) to Ashburton is 420NM - in a little wooden plane cruising at 80Kts at Max all up weight (plus a little bit...). This has been one of the hottest recorded weekends on record here with surface temps well over 35 deg C, and the poor old Jodel struggled to climb due to high density altitude, weight and oil temps. A real interesting experience. Some pics for those who havent seen a NZ summer yet:
Southbound at low level down the coast near the Raumai Gunnery Range (range not active - airspace open!)
The Jodel at Foxpine, an airpark near the town of Foxton
Crossing Cook Straight - a dangerous stretch of water between the North and South Islands.
the Rakaia River and Southern Alps
a general view of the aircraft at the fly -in:
Beautiful sunset cloudscape:
Northbound again - the "Glass cockpit" in the Jodel!
Mt Ruapehu in the centre of the North Island - from overhead some serious vertical Bush - covered country
We even found two moderate-sized uncontrolled fires in the remote reaches of the Wanganui River (National Park). we reported these to ATC as we are required to do, but they will probably be left to burn as they are natural burns in a very remote area
A long flight (in a very butt-numbing seat!) 6 hours down (plus fuel stops) 7 hours back!
