As well as I can tell, if there is a difference between Gliders and Sailplanes, I would think the Sailplanes have much wider wingspans, but much smaller cords in their wings.  A glider could technically be any light airplane that is balanced to not have an engine.

I guess it would be a pretty fine line.  Maybe someone at www.skysailing.com could help us out?  I've met Bret Willat and company.  Great bunch of people, and they run a fun little operation in Warner Springs, CA.

Yes and no.  Its about finding the right glide ratio for that airplane.  For instance in our warriors its 73 knots.  At that speed the warrior produces the least ammount of drag for the maximum ammount of lift.  This allow's you glide (or fall with style) for the most ammont of time.  I dont know off hand, but if I remember right the glide ration on our warriors is someting like 9:1 ie it will move 9 units forward for every one unit it will drop (cant remember if its in feet meters or what but thats the gist).  Gliders have some ungodly glide ratios, my friend flys them at the air force academy and he was telling me they have one experimental one that has like a 20:1 glide ratio.  The lower the ratio, the shorter youll fly, er fall, the higher the longer you'll stay aloft.

So what's the glide ratio of an anvil??   ::rofl::
