Tried to find my declassified pictures of the US built flying saucers (lifting body). They do have vertical stabs. Picture has 3 of them, large in the center flanked forward by two smaller (smaller ones are 50 ft across IIRC, larger one was 200 ft). flanking the two smaller ones is a pair of F-86s. They made quite a number of them during testing, and they'd fly in formations.
Pictures seem to be on my old desktop, will have to assemble the thing in GA and get the pictures off of it to post some day.
