online poker

i was curious, who else here is dumb enough, besides me, to play party poker? i've been doing alright the last couple of days on a 5/10 table going up as much as a couple hundred bucks to as of now, a few dollars. and DARN IT! i just went out on a tournament, as i type this up, where i went all-in with QK and a K on the board and lost out to a flush that was caught on the river.....grrrrr. anyway...who else plays?

I never tried online, but had some little experience at casinos (specially playing American roulette). I went 4 times and never ever after. that last evening I had changed fiches for 200 $ and at my very first try at the roulette I heavily put the half on a number. I got paid 36 times...and wasn't smart enough to understand that the evening should have ended, briefly losing all the starting and gained capital . While studying at university in Switzerland, on the contrary, I started every morning during some months buying newspaper, croissant, coffee and a "scratch & win" game called "tribolo", not a big expense, but quite expensive on a long term, even if it looks, at first, like buying a small cup of coffee extra everyday. the only time I had won something (the only time!), I lost the card. that day, also, was my last day playing money   there is a byword saying that you're lucky or at gambling or in love. I'm not really sure that it really applies!

I will do the freebie ones, but I never do any of the ones you have to pay for.  It's way too easy to get ripped off by some unscrupulous website that is either out to get your credit card info, or to simply rig the games so you can't win.  Those that are honest are still subject to the same odds rules, which means I'd much rather take my chances in a real casino if I'm going to pony up some hard earned cash.  At least there I know the gaming commission is keeping an eye on them.

DAMN FLUSHES!!! I would have played the same way! I don't play online, if its free I don't play well... no money no risk... and I refuse to  give my cc info for the same reasons as T_S gave.

But a few buddies get together about once a month and play... $30 max for the night. We aren't hard core... it's mainly a reason to drink and friends dont let friends bet drunk... so no one is "cleaned" out.

Yes. I won on a number, neither a selection. and it was my real first bet that evening. I just had had time to enter into the casino, get cleared with ID, change money in chips, sit down to the roulette table, give a glance during 10 minutes, and bet. then I used the other two hours to lose everything, sure to win again!  And from that day on, I swore I would never put again a foot into a casino....

When playing with friends, I put a little more but online, I'm just scared that something happend in the middle of an important hand. Can you imagine, you have an excellent hand and the other guy go all in, you have already put a lot on this hand, you know your hand is better, your turn. Just when you want to hit call, BOOM, screen go dark (electric power failure). SPAARK, it this YOU?

As for using a credit card online, this is not something I'm scared of. Yeah, some websites can use this info but this is the same as a waiter in a restaurant talking your card for 5 minutes. Or hotel taking a reservation on the phone,...

Online poker sites do so much money with the rake from tables, they have no interest in using your credit card info.

I guess I should clarify as to the danger of the online gambling sites and credit card info.  If you are dealing with a big name casino, the danger is smaller as they will have better protection in place, but with the unknowns, the danger is two-fold.  One, they can misuse your credit card info directly if they are unscrupulous.  Or, and this is even more dangerous, if they have inadequate security and are storing your credit card info on a vulnerable server connected to, or accessible via the Internet, your information could be stolen by a hacker.  That is the higher risk, in fact, because there are tons of hackers out there ready to pounce.  I'm not saying it's definitely going to happen, just that it can, and has happened in the past, so I'm gun shy about that sort of thing.

I started my academic career studing forensic sciences, but I left as soon as I had to run out of a course (principles of forensic science) since I had to vomit. the prof was holding a course on the subject of determination of death time/period. he had already explained things as rigor and livor mortis and was passing to much more disgusting things as showing pics of dead bodies and the kind of insects that develops inside after putrefaction, so that we should have learnt how to determine the time of the death from this kind of thing. it was enough to tell myself "you go for something less exciting....".

yeah, there's no way i'd be able to do forensics. shoot, my dad was a surgeon and wanted me to follow in his footsteps. after watching him do an apendectomy, i was like "no thanks!"

Fortunately, computer disection is a bit less grotesque than with biologicals.  Of course, as computers progress into the chemical, and maybe, one day, biocybernetics, well... that may change.   I've had the "pleasure" (I use that term here very sarcastically) of attending a number of post-mortems.  I started out wanting to be a physician, so I got in on a number of operations, which was great!  Then there was the flip side of the coin where you deal with the ones that don't make it.  All I can say is that, while you can get used to the odors, no amount of Vicks Vapo-Rub or other such tricks actually works to cover up those things.  Visually I can handle most things.... but ... well... let's not go there.  Suffice to say that morgues are kept cold in the autopsy and storage areas for very good reason.

I'm glad computers don't have biological components.
