Top Gun 2 green lit!

Check this here out!

http://robotceleb.com/news/23882-10162010-top-gun-2-tom-cruise-sequel.html

Hm, about 23 years late, I would say. I am afraid that even i they turn it into a decent movie, I won't be able to watch it unbiased, since the original played such a big role in my childhood, and my expectations will be way too high. Kinda like with the new Star Wars movies.

I wonder who will be in it! And I'd be surprised if the flying scenes wouldn't turn out to be 90% CGI...

The main problem with doing the sequel is that the way aviation warfare is waged now has changed dramatically since the previous movie. The original Top Gun focused on the pilots learning the art of dog-fighting as they went head-to-head against their opponents in the air.

On the modern battlefield this rarely happens.
The weapons and aircraft are different with a whole new generation of pilots

Preview of Top Gun 2 - The New Generation

New Generation Pilots use modern equipment and tactics...

Sexy Aircraft to be drooled over...

Battle scenes where the aircraft meet the enemy ...

And the Pilots fight a long hard fight commuting home thousands of miles from their aircraft

I can't wait to see it when it comes out. Yes I'm worried about how they are going to do it especially since the Tomcat is retired and all....The movie will insta fail IMO if there is no tomcat!

However a simple solution would be to make the movie take place in a earlier time frame maybe a year or two after the first. ::thinking::

Or a plot about how dumb the 18s are and the transition from epic amazing mega doom elite killer bad ass Tomcat squadron converting int a sisyfied no good failbaot panzy turd eating 18 squadron.

Not gonna happen, last time there was a movie with USN pilots and it wasn't science fiction, the Super Horror was doing Mach 3 chased by SA-13 for 5 minutes  ::rofl::

I think a good way to go would be to make it about Mavericks dad and a young version Tom Skerritt and about what really happened back then. You know, the mission nobody could talk about.....
There won't be any F-14's but other classics, I am sure.

But in all reality, the navy might need another big ad for recruitment so they'll use the stealth fighter or something with a bunch of CGI and bugger it all up.......

Then there is a question - what movie about fighter pilots were not at some point silly, and made right ? "The Great Santini", and "Bridges at Toko-Ri" excluded ;)

A quote from "Flight of Intruder" comes to mind: "Fighter pilots make movies, bomber pilots make history!" ... although best aviation movies were about the bomber crews not fighter pilots ;)

I think the Battle of Britain was a good fighter pilot movie. Although the German movie of the Red Baron was not!

I am a little biased toward the F/A-18 for two reasons. I worked on them when I was in the Marines. I never really liked Top Gun as much as most other people did. Tomcat is a faster bird than the Hornet, and built more for air superiority. (Owed more to the Phoenix missiles than anything else.)

I like the Hornets more for the sound they make when they fly by. Tomcats whine and scream while Hornets howl. It's not quite the same sound as the F-104 starfighters, but I still like it very much.

Of course, anything punching afterburners roars. There's no way around it. If you like afterburners, listen to the B-1s. All four of their engines afterburn.

Then again, my favorite military aircraft isn't a fighter. I have a real soft spot for the trainers. I get more excited about the T-6 Texan II and the T-38 than I do about the F/A-18 or the F-14.

I'm very curious to see how the JSF will be once it enters service. It looks like a really neat bird.

Top Gun did generate a great deal of interest in aviation, and that's a really good point going for the movie. I still reserve the right to not be thrilled by it. One thing is for certain, you won't see me ever post a flying video with music from Top Gun playing. If I do ever post a video with the music, it will be as a joke and not as a serious video.

I really liked the original movie, and honestly, I don't think the sequel might be as epic as the first one - as long as it features modern day combats, at least.

A jet fighter movie about nowadays US Navy will be much more like Stealth, or even worse. The thing is, just like many others have already pointed out, a big thrill of older fighter movies are the dogfights. You can make 2 straight hours of aircraft going toe to toe, and will still be godamn good to watch.

But there are no more dogfights now. And I doubt the audience will be at the very least amused to see pilots look at radar screen blips all the time, fire a missile or two at an invisible target, watch blips disappear and call it a day. A movie about this has lost most of the actual joy of watching aerial combat, which is the adrenaline rush of seeing the face of your own enemy mere feet away - both of you being strapped to aluminum tubes, flying at hundreds of miles an hour, trying to machinegun each other down.

That's why I agree that it would make much more sense for Top Gun 2 to be set around the same time of the first - like, a few years later or even a few years before.

That said, I think the best fighter movie of the last few years was Flyboys. It explores one very underrated (hollywoodian speaking) historic event (WWI), and has got some bad ass dogfighting sequences.
Behold, the only three phrases a co-pilot is ever allowed to say: "nice landing, captain"; "it was the wind, captain"; "the fat girl is mine, captain".

There is still some capacity for a dogfight scenes in todays movies, but few tricks have to be done to make it interesting. "Sky Fighters" can be an example here, where the fight ensured under strict ROE and both sides had similar capabilities. If there would be no such restrictions, the fight would look like the F-22 scene from "The A-Team" which was like 100 frames long, and most of those were the bad guy exploding ;)

Yet I feel that the only way for this movie to be any good, would be to take us back into the Nam, and show us the Duke Mitchell story.
