John And Martha King Held At Police Gunpoint (Really)

By Russ Niles, Editor-in-Chief

Aviation's most prominent husband and wife team is calling on government agencies to keep their databases up to date and warning pilots and aircraft owners they could be next to be surrounded by heavily armed police, handcuffed and detained because of a bit of miscommunication. John and Martha King say there's a lesson to be learned after they spent about 30 scary minutes in the custody of Santa Barbara, Calif., police at the Santa Barbara Airport Saturday. Authorities thought their leased Cessna 172 was a Cessna 150 that had been stolen eight years previously in Texas. The 172, which is owned by Cessna Aircraft, was assigned the N-number of the stolen 150 in 2009, years after the FAA had cancelled that registration on the 150. Apparently no one told the El Paso Intelligence Center, an arm of the Drug Enforcement Agency, and other government departments that keeps tabs on, among other things, flights of stolen aircraft. When the Kings filed IFR for their flight from San Diego to meet friends in Santa Barbara, the local police were alerted to intercept the aircraft when it landed. As Martha King told us in the accompanying podcast, what followed was, in her opinion, unnecessarily dangerous and uncomfortable.

King says they were approached by police prepared for the worst, with guns drawn and others taking cover behind the doors of the four police cars that responded. Although anyone who has met the Kings would describe them as anything but threatening in appearance and demeanor, the police took no chances and maintained their aggressive stance through the ordeal. "I would have thought at that point when they got us out it would have ratcheted down quite a bit because I don't think we exactly look like your typical airplane thief," she said. The Kings were not hurt and the airplane was not damaged. The police did not apologize but did justify their actions by saying it was a report that had to be checked out, King said. The Kings said they went public with their experience in hopes that law enforcement agencies will double-check stolen aircraft reports and to warn pilots that there's a chance their N-number could come up under similar circumstances.

wow. Even considering the fact that they couldn't know it wasen't really a stolen airplane, they should have been more relax. Aren't people supposed to be considered not guilty until proven othewise?

Maybe I live in a super low violence crime rate area but I once saw 2 police at the airplane rental office.  They chat camly with the clerk and waited for a specific airplane to land. They let the guy park the airplane and meet him while he was walking to the building. With their guns on their belt, they firmly but clamly said "sir, keep your hands where I can see them and drop your bag on the ground." They chat for a minute or 2 and ended looking at the VNC of the guy, talking with the pilot, some instructors in the manager office.

His crime wasn't that minor. He flew at 1000 agl over a prison.

I guess the same thing wouldn't end up as smooth as this with Santa Barbara police officers.

For once it wasn't the TSA that was giving avaition a bad name but still but still that's unbelievable. Can't they tell the difference between a 150 and a 172? I hope the Kings are all right again over that scare, I don't think I could've handled such a situation all that well.

I bet one of the cops was forced to watch a King video once while being billed for ground instruction - that's enough to justify police brutality >:D.  Those King videos are the worst thing I've ever seen.

Seriously though, that sounds like a pretty unreasonable response by the police department  ::loony::.

Avweb reported that John King recieved a full honest-sounding apology from the police over the phone and they are now talking about what can be done to help the police etc. so mistakes like this doesn't happen again.

Rather than giving full blame to SBPD for the severe response in the King incident we might consider that our society's morals have deteriorated to the point where "relaxed" officers not following a more aggressive protocol are being gunned down on a regular basis.

PS    I don't care for their videos either but obviously someone does.   (don't these people drive their own bizjet?)

not to mention, if they ever end up having to shoot somebody, the poor guys get in trouble for it and suspended and the whole neigborhood gets up in arms about the poor perp .... (see recent LA incident)

not a job I would want.....
I wonder if they're even gonna find people to join the police in the future. And what ever happened to the old local cop everbody knew about who let you off for minor things or gave you a little asphalt counceling when you actually deserved it.....

It's weird to hear the stories my small town cops tell about the old days and the old guys in the business of law enforcement, people don't know the first thing about police "brutality".  The taser and stun gun are both extremely humane pieces of technology compared to getting your face smashed in with a black jack or if the officer was getting up there in age and wasn't up for a fight he would just as soon shoot the perp dead.  Police are people too, fallible, but they've been charged to keep the peace and at the end of the day they want to go home, not get buried.  Besides if you're innocent, why are you fighting the police?

Just look at what happened in Ecuador with the police  ::sick:: they kidnaped president Correa! Here in México, most of police corporations are the "organized crime"  ::banghead::. When they stop you, they ALLWAYS ask for a "mordida" (a "bite" is $$$ - since 1952, when I arrived to México: nothing new under the Sun) unless one is declaring NOT inocent: then they let you go for free... that's why we have the Mex Army doing police work.

Inocent or not, police should ask for one's ID first!
