2 killed in crash at Darwin Airport
TWO pilots were killed when their jet crashed at Darwin Airport yesterday.
A witness said the 30-seater plane ploughed into trees "at full pelt" and exploded.
"Nobody could have got out of that alive," he said.
The pilots, Greg Seymon and Shane Whitbread, were experienced - one was monitoring the other on a routine training flight in the Airnorth Embraer EMB-120.
They were the only people on board.
The plane crashed on the RAAF Base side of the airport seconds after taking off from the main civilian runway. Police said the cause of the disaster was still unknown.
They said the twin-engine jet banked sharply after takeoff and plunged into the ground. Witness Greg Archer, 48, said the Embraer hit 8m-high trees at speed.
