fixed wing and heli heaphones plugs
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:18:03 PM »
Hey everyone,
what is the difference between the fixed wing and the helicopter's headphones plug? I saw a picture of both of them and I noticed that the fixed wing are seperated to two plugs-one mic and the other is left ear and right ear, while the helicopter's plug is mic, left ear and right ear in one plugs.
Besides those difference, is there anything else?

Tis all about size and impedance...I just happen to have both right here:

General aviation headphones are high impedance, military are low impedance.

When I fly GA, I use a plain "Y" adapter to adapt my headphones to fly helicopters.

There are impedance adapters if you cross from GA to military.

actually, the civilian helo plugs are also high impedance but they look like military single plugs

problem is you won't find out until you're in the air half the time.
if I had a nickel for every time somebody thought his old Army helmet works in my helicopter ....
...I think I'd have around 2 bucks by now!

And the rest---I think if we got the red and blue team guys together we would have enough for a night on the town.....

Thanks for the asnwers guys!
I asked this because a discussion developed in an Israeli aviation forum, and someone said that an adapter between helicopter and fixed wings  headphones plugs costs about 50 bucks, and I'm currently making audio cables adapters, like 3.5 mm plug to 1/4 inch plug or male to male 3.5 mm plug, and the costs of the components combined doesn't get to 10 bucks, so I was interested why does the adapters costs so much.

it probably costs so much because the helicopter plugs have the word "helicopter" in them...  ;D

I don't think it's because it's compicated. I had an adapter for years. Looks like just a few splices.....
