While not funny by itself the story that goes with this approach is funny.

So a few weeks ago I'm working this area and an AmFlight calls up and wants to change from VFR to IFR and wants to go direct to GICYE, our radios in the backwoods of Oregon aren't the best and the controller working the radar cant understand what the guy is trying to say.  After playing word tag for about 5 min with the guy he decides to spell out the fix using phonetics, the pilots comes back, "affirmative we want direct GICYE for the RNAV 34".  Our controller comes back with, "Yeah AmFlight 452 whatever, you're cleared direct there, cross that fix at or above 080, cleared RNAV 34 approach".  Word for word, I swear to god.



Not and approach, but its an arrival that starts in our area, notice the fix after OWLEK, EWOKS

Of notable interest is the note in the bottom left of the plan view, "Successful go around improbable, if initiated past the MAP"

Sparrevohn is rather infamous in Alaska.  What the approch plate doesn't tell you is that it's on the side of a near cliff, in a steep narrow valley.  The alaska supplamental has warnings about turning around on the runway!

This site has some old photos of it, but they don't do justice to the slopes on either side of the runway.  In one photo you can see a tall cut bank in the background, it's along one edge of the runway.

That is pretty impressice.  Google earth gives a decent idea as well of what it looks like.

Sorry for the late reply, I'm catching up on posts (I am so happy that this forum software keeps the "new" tag on until you've opened it, and not just for a few minutes after your login like most other forums do). That's really funny (well, if you succeed your landing at that one place), are those for real?
