Question for all you aviation buffs!
« on: December 23, 2008, 02:05:35 AM »
While I was discussing a few new strips with Stef we ended up at the topic about when the first airline flight took place.

Here is the actual question:

When was the first documented international passenger flight by an airline and where did it take place?

We couldn't find it on google nor do we know much about airline history. But I am guessing some of you might. Turbo? Frank? Gibbo? anybody?

I'd be very grateful for any good answers....
(it's bugging me now that I couldn't find it)

Thanks G-Man!

Who knew you followed the history of the inferior flying machines invented by bicycle mechanics . . .  ;D

I am afraid though (and that's just a hunch) that this was in an aera where the europeans and Americans were battling for air superiority...
So, was this the first scheduled airline flight EVER, or just in the US?
You know how the Americans are, they still think they have the first aerobatic helicopter ever (see Chuck, that IS you thread) !! HA HA ::rofl::
AND.... it wasn't the first international flight, was it?!

sooooo.... do we have the full story?
(we need the info fo a strip we're working on and our fans are picky, so I need the whole story...)

There seems to be a German airline founded in 1909, operating Zeppelins only though.. known as DELAG or Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DELAG

Also, first international airline flight seems to be on August 25, 1919 - when British company Aircraft Transport and Travel flew London to Paris. Northwest supposedly flew US to Canada in the 20s.

Got no garanties this is the first flight (or if there was pax in it)  but found this on KLM website (http://corporate.klm.com/en/about-klm/history):

October 1, 1924: KLM initiated its first intercontinental flight, from Amsterdam to Batavia (Colonial Jakarta) in a Fokker F-VII.

At your local library, you can also find interesting article (Flight, history of is one of them) in Britanica Encyclopeadia. I have access to the online articles but unfortunally, I can't post due to copyrights restrictions.
