The second video there is from the Valdez STOL competition.  The plane taking off is the Cub Crafters Carbon Cub.  It beat out a 1952 Piper PA-12 by 2 feet.  The landing plane is a highly modified Maule.  What's not obvious is the 25kt head wind that day.  Another cub was flipped up on it's nose while taxiing that day.

The video is called "Big Rocks and Long Props".

The big tires actually hurt stopping.  Take much more breaking power to generate resistance due the the extra torque arm.  They also increase take-off distance because of the rotational inertia.  They weigh 40lbs each after all.

Personally I call the video "Stupid Cub Tricks".  Professional bush pilots don't use the water like that.  It's too risky.  If your engine hiccups, or you hit a rock or stump just under the water you end up upside down, IN the water.  ::sick::  ::eek::  Plus, you have to hold the brakes while water skimming like that or they'll catch and flip ya, but don't hold them too hard or you'll be in for a shock when you hit the beach.  That and they're doing it with no gear and only mimimal fuel.  In a real bush situation they'd be loaded up with a passenger and camping/hunting gear.  The Professionals use a stabilized, power off approach and carefully control their airspeed so they flare out and touch exactly where they want on the gravel bar.

Incidently, last time those guys were in Alaska, one of they had to call a whirly bird to haul his plane to the nearest village.  Screw ups are a lot more expensive when you can't drive to them.

All things being said these guys are great pilots no matter what fixed wing aircraft they are flying! The Husky and Pitts factory is right over the hill from us here in Logan so we see a bunch of the the Husky planes around here, and there are not many pilot who can do the stuff your see on those videos, 25 kt wind or not.

Yes, Mike the guy standing next to me was this really cool guy who was flying the Vernal fire contract last year. ::wave:: hmmm that would be you.

Mitchell99:
Good to see you in here, buddy!
How are things going at your school?
Did you get the new hangar up and running yet?

Tundra:
You have a very valid point there. I'd never go out and try this myself and I have seen a lot of cool stuff done with helicopters which I would never do either. It is fun to watch though.
But like Mitchell said, they are good pilots. It's a vicious circle. I know a lot of really good pilots who can get themselves out of really bad situations because they are so good and true naturals...
...that being said, I great and truly professional pilot wouldn't get himself into a stupid situation in the first place . . .  ;)

Oh, and I LOVED your last line of your post. . .
who got their planes out of the woods after they broke 'em?
 ;) ;D
gotta love it if you run with the Rotortrash-Crowd like I do !!!  ::wave::

I didn't mean to diminish the skill of those pilots.  I'm just getting worried by the number of people I meet that seem to think those are training videos.   When in fact they're daredevils, not professionals.  Not the video producer's fault, sort of like someone watching an aerobatic video to learn to fly.  ::)  Too many people just assume that's how real bush pilots do it.

you're right!

I wonder if there is a disclaimer on that DVD  ;)
I am sure some schmuk will sue them after trying this at home with his own Piper Cub . . . ;D

Mike, The school is going great!  Had a little slow down because financing is getting tougher to get.  The hangar has been slowed down by Logan City and their permit process.  But hey, we should be putting up the steel next week.  The floor was poured last week and it looks great! Not to mention the in floor heating will be REALLY NICE! It should be done in by the end of September, but we'll see.

As for the topic.  I there are a couple of things I have learned, and I'm sure that most pilots have also heard or learned that my pertain;

There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.
Use your superior knowledge, so you don't have to use your superior piloting skills.
Use your head, or break your head. It's your choice.

Hey, that DVD was my Valentine's Day gift....  that's some crazy-ass stuff!!

I agree, there are many things I would never try in an aircraft, simply because I know I would get my ass kicked.  But I know guys who do some of this stuff, and they are good solid pilots...  not knuckleheads.  They just happen to have skills above the norm.

I'd love to have .002% of the skill level my boss has, for example.  But, I'm still going to enjoy what other pilots can do with a machine, like Mikey says.
