"Amelia" movie will star Hilary Swank
« on: April 09, 2008, 07:02:39 AM »
There will be a new movie coming out about the life of Amelia Earhart.  It will star Hilary Swank.   :)

I'm not one who would pay attention to movie news, but in this case, it will involve a friend who is going to fly the Lockheed..  they will meet tomorrow and go from there!  He also said he met Elgin Long, who wrote a book about Amelia, and who started as a navigator on the Boeing Clippers (Airtac -- do you suppose your friend knows him?)  Mr. Long also flew solo, around the globe, via the POLES..  the only person to ever do so!    |:)\

I'm so envious of my buddy I could lay an egg.  Good thing we're here in the Coop...    :o

 :)

The movie "Amelia" is due out this week -- October 23rd -- and the film people have recognized the original connection between Amelia and the first meeting of the nation's women pilots (the "99s", because there were 99 of them), by meeting with the current 99s leadership, even flying in to a press conference in the airplane.

My pilot friend who was originally involved in the aircraft side of things, was very disappointed when the movie people decided to use a different Lockheed in the filming.  But, I'm sure he can't wait to see the movie, either.

Mark your calendars!  I just read that the radio transmissions at the end of the film are the actual transmissions from her....

I know due to a recent visit at Vintage Wings in CYND that Ms. Swank actually starts a Waco herself, but the flying is done by the owner wearing a wig... :P

Yes, I read about the guy with the wig being the pilot in the long shots...  that would have been my buddy from California (the original plan), except they decided to go with that other airplane.

I read another article where she said she loved the flying so much, that she was going to get her license...  not sure if she did, or not.

I just hope it's not the usual DUMB version of flying that we tend to get in a movie!!    :-\

 :D

what you mean the cockpit mock up mounted on springs in a studio and a few stage hands rocking it to make it look like its flying?
"You can teach monkeys to fly better than that!"and "spring chicken to sh**e hawk in one easy lesson"

Yeah!!  Exactly!!!    ::)

One of my favorites is the old videotape I have of a French TV documentary -- they showed up to do a fire show and so took tons of footage in the turbine DC-3.  In those days, we were allowed to take people along on training jumps, so they had all kinds of nice shots.

Well, when they sent us our copies, many months later, they had added the sound of the RADIAL engines over the shots of the TURBINE Doug doing cargo passes!  We were all sitting there with our jaws hanging down...  but then it was just hilarious, and we couldn't stop laughing!!    ::rofl::

The Amelia Earhart exibit opens in the Seattle Museum of Flight this Saturday.
The opening has not been known (even by the museum) because it was timed to the movie release.
The exhibit will run until May, 2010.

In Search of Amelia Earhart

The Museum of Flight has brought together resources from around the country for its new exhibit about the remarkable life and times of famous American pilot, Amelia Earhart. Opening Oct. 24, In Search of Amelia Earhart will feature many of her original personal artifacts, as well as photos, newspapers, and newsreel footage.

Overview

Growing up in the early 20th century, Earhart was inspired by the achievements of women of her day and would come to be an inspiration to many more. Earhart was one of a small number of women who earned their pilot’s license in the early 1920s and promoted aviation her entire life. After the non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1928 as a passenger aboard the Fokker F.VII Friendship, she had many achievements and also broke a number of records piloting different aircraft. In 1932 she completed a solo transcontinental flight across the U.S. and her celebrity grew, as she became a sought after public speaker and product endorser. In 1937 she nearly completed a record-setting flight around the world, but was lost in the Pacific Ocean—a mystery which captured the world’s attention and continues to be a subject of interest today.

The lesser known Amelia—role model, author, designer, celebrity, icon

    * She used her fame to play an important role in the women's rights movement, lecturing around the country
    * She published many newspaper and magazine articles, and several books
    * For a time, Amelia designed clothing, which was sold exclusively at 30 departments stores throughout the U.S.
    * She endorsed several products, including Lucky Strike cigarettes, malted milk, and luggage
    * She was a career advisor for women students at Purdue University

Featured Artifacts

    * Flight suit, slacks, jacket and helmet she wore on 1932 solo transatlantic flight
    * Nurse's uniform
    * Only remaining piece of her Lockheed Electra 10E
    * Other personal artifacts and correspondence reproductions

A little blurb about the only remaining model 10, now in San Diego:

San Diego, CA ---

On Saturday September 5th, The San Diego Air & Space Museum received "Muriel," a sister airplane to the one Amelia Earhart flew on her final flight 72 years ago. The Museum will assist with assembly and restoration of the Lockheed Electra L10-E for Grace McGuire, an aviator with hopes of completing Amelia's dream of flying around the world.

McGuire is the proud and passionate owner of "Muriel", one of only 15 L10-Es made and the only remaining one. She purchased the neglected remains of the vintage airplane in the 1980's and began to restore it to original condition. Once "Muriel" is ready to fly, McGuire plans to attempt the only complete duplication of Amelia's trip around the world. There have been several commemorative flights but never an exact duplication using the same type of aircraft, equipment and crew.

There are some photos of "Muriel" here-

McGuire named the plane, ‘Muriel’ after her friend, Muriel Earhart Morrissey, sister to Amelia.  Muriel passed away at the age of 98 in 1998.

I will have to see the movie before any opinions; judging from pics, Hilary Swank fisicly does the Amelia Earhart part convincingly. Bad movie reviews though,  http://tvnz.co.nz/entertainment-news/amelia-movie-review-3245264...but we know movie critics: they are not pilots...
Here the movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioZCEpRLpxo were the flying and the planes are convincing (for me)

Strange; but the Lokheed Electra flight scenes, remind me a lot similar scenes on this trailer: http://www.terwilligerproductions.com/aviationepic/
