Dumb Question 4: Pilot ID at airports
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:50:10 PM »
Ok maybe this isn't quite a dumb question however here's the deal: When working as a commercial pilot do you have a pilot ID (like a driver's license for instance) so you can get cleared to return to your aircraft from inside the terminal? (yes Mary this is partly based on your story). This is also based on the fact that I probably won't be wearing a airlinepilot uniform/suit, and speaking of appearence, would I get laughed at if I arrive with this kind of shirt on? (I'm serious, I actually like it and am thinking of buying one, or two if it's good)

I just walk up wearing my sunglasses, white scarf, leather jacket, big watch and stupid smile---they let me through without even looking in my gun case! ::unbelieveable::

Seriously, the company issues a picture ID----

I haven't had a picture ID since I left the commuter airline in New Mexico that I was Chief Pilot at.  That ID was issued by the Albuquerque airport authority, per US TSA regulations for air carriers and flight crews and it allowed me onto the airline ramp so I could do my job.  It was also accepted by Phoenix Sky Harbor airport authority.

Many US charter and fractional companies issue Flight Crew picture ID's which helps them gain access to the General Aviation ramps at larger airports.  However, it does NOT allow them access to the Air Carrier ramps around the terminals.

Does that help answer your question, Frank?

And BTW... the only Dumb Question in aviation is the one that wasn't asked.   |:)\

I have two ID's. One is my company photo ID that has a chip in it that allows me through the secured doors at our hangar. I also have an airport issued ID (10 year background check, fingerprints taken) that allows me to be on the ramp. Since I'm a supervisor, My ID allows me on the air carrier ramp, baggage area along with driving privileges on ramps and (with ATC permission) Runways and Taxiways (for towing aircraft) I also have Escort authority to escort unbadged personnel in the secured area.

Two badges here, both of which require a background check.  Company ID and an airport ID.  Had two airport IDs until January, but with recent changes to the system here in Fairbanks they had us pilots return our FAI badges and move towards using just Anchorage badges to meet badging requirements.

With larger carriers, an airport badge might not be neccessary.

Non corporate GA pilots won't really have any fancy badges etc.

Over (down under) here  :D we have to apply for an ASIC (Aviation Security ID Card) and have to have it BEFORE we can solo or operate out of other airport/fields etc.  It took 3 months of patient waiting, while ALL of my back ground checks where done  ::drinking:: , this card actually held me up from doing my first solo  :(.  We (even GA student pilots like me  ;D not far to go now...pre-check ride day tomorrow!!!) have to dispay it everytime we are on the airside of airfields.

LOL, that suit sounds like fun!

Thank you all for the replies |:)\ I was just wondering since hearing that story about Mary not being allowed back out to her plane and one of her "kids" had to come in from the plane to ask what was going on.
