Airwolf flies in Denmark!
« on: December 02, 2007, 08:33:42 PM »
I was trying to find pictures of the Jumbo that had visited Odense Airport, and some searches seem to indicate it was there for a giant company trip/event with 6000 people but still no pictures so I'm searching thrue the danish spotters forum and find some pictures from a 2006 Odense Airport show and then when one person ask about one of the 222B's Air Alpha has here a guy replies that the pilot said it not only was the same type as Airwolf but it was Airwolf! Appearently there were three flying 222B's used for filming. The helicopter is currently registered as OY-HIG. Not sure if this was the one bought from NYPD though (I got a photo of that one hovertaxiing in Odense before it was repainted to Air Alpha colours).
Until today I'd only heard there was one Airwolf and it had a fatal crash in Germany some years ago.

Found some pictures, they're 2/3s down the page, and the text speaks for itself. Another image search for the registration also gave a result where it said "(Air Wolf)" after the name/reg.
http://www.avifoto.dk/172-169-fly.htm and here from airliners.net, most of them from Odense (just 5 miles from here): http://www2.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=OY-HIG&distinct_entry=true

If anyone want a ride, it's just 18000 DKK/hour. (about 3600 USD)

There was a guy in Clovis, NM (my hometown) who had two Blue Thunders (yeah, I know. Not Airwolf, but still an interesting helo). One was airworthy and the other was a ground prop. He flew folks in it for a while, until he couldn't afford
to fly it, then he trailered it around to events and offered cockpit photos for a fee. Eventually, I believe he sold it to someone who wanted to get it flying again, though I don't know what happened with it after that.
Hmm... now I'm curious. Google time!

Ahh, here we go. They belonged to the brother of Larry Grube, an adopted uncle-of-sorts (and owner of a local toy store) who went on vacation with us a few times when I was young.

The 222 is a nice machine. I worked the Prince Rupert FSS this summer, on Canada's west coast, just south of the Alaskan panhandle. Vancouver Island Helicopters flies C-GVIY, a Bell 222UT (a 222B with skids instead of retractable gear) out of Prince Rupert; it's the only MEDEVAC heli for northwestern BC. Every now and then the heli pilots like to approach the public helipad passing low over the FSS. The 222 rattles the windows and shakes the desks in a way that even a twin rotor H-46 Labrador / Sea Knight won't!

I know a few of the pilots who flew for the "Airwolf" show. I can probably get that verified if you like.

Velo: Blue Thunder is also very cool, a Gazelle if I remember correctly, although the gun in the nose required counterweights in the tail (this was also mentioned in the movie but I think it was also a real problem, not sure if it was a mock-up or a real gun though). I heard the special parts are in bad state in a back lot of a movie studio.

5by5: Welcome to the forum, yes the 222 does make some noise, either OY-HIG or one of the other 222B's from Air Alpha landed almost right next to the road when me and my where driving in Odense some weeks ago, it was an event where one could get a short flight from a football field for less than 1000DKK and I just heard something I knew was a helicopter and close and then looked out the left window and there it was on final approach just barely over the treetops and less than 50 meters to the side, it was almost unreal!

Mike: You know some of the pilots that worked on the show? Cool! Of course I'd like to know if it's true about OY-HIG, heck maybe it was Redwolf :D
Under the notes of the photos posted on Airliners.net it says cn 47132, is that the serial number? If so then maybe that can help.
