Actually, the one thing I did learn while living in a college dorm (yes, I even read a book once) was that if the pile of dirty laundry gets big enough, the resultant weight of dirty clothes on top presses the soil from the underlying layers into the carpet so that items can be extracted from the bottom and worn.
