Title: Thunder Over Reno
Post by: Rooster Cruiser on August 14, 2007, 06:34:42 PM
Hey Y'all,

Heads up.  Sept 2007 is supposed to be the month when the new aviation movie debuts; Thunder Over Reno.

http://thunderoverreno.com/index2.html

The cast includes names I'm not familiar with:  Hawk Younkins, Nataha Yi, and Isabella St James.  The actual star of the movie appears to be Bob Odegaard's F2G Super Corsair, and Bob himself is listed as one of the executive producers.

Looks like it'll be full of great shots taken from the two previous Reno Air Races (2005 and 2006).  They're claiming no CGI scenes... all the shots taken were air to air.  It remains to be seen whether the plot will live up to the billing (The World's Fastest Love Story), or whether it will rise to the status of Classic Aviation Movie like Top Gun or not.  Still... it should be entertaining for those of us who have never had the opportunity to actually go to Reno.  I'm looking forward to seeing this one on the big screen.

I am going to predict that once it gets close to the release date for Thunder Over Reno, the History Channel will debut a few programs about the various air races that have been held over the years.  Probably start with the Schneider Cup, Thompson Trophy and Bendix Races, then continue with the Powder Puff derbies, the Palms to Pines races through Reno and the Mojave 500 to today's various air races including ones like the Marion Jane air Race and the Red Bull competitions.

Anyone want to lay odds on this happening?  Hehe.

Just watched the trailer...looks good if more than a little dramatized (HELLO HOLLYWOOD!  ::rofl::) Lots of nice looking iron there.  I noticed Bob is one of the major investors.  No surprise there!  Hope this has a decent turn out and spurs interest in air racing and aviation in general.  I'm not about to take a bet about history channel running specials on air racing or aviation just prior to the opening :P  My favorite channel and I KNOW they do that stuff before a movie!

Whaddya expect???  Its Hollywood, so its GOT to be dramatized!  As with everything Hollywood, drama keeps the general public glued to their seats, accuracy is often sacrificed in order to make a story more interesting, and the romance angle is thrown in for the ladies.

Does anyone here think it would be even remotely possible that there would be such a thing as a talent scout out looking for crop duster pilots to recruit to go fly somebody's 5 million dollar racer?  Lets get real, the Unlimited racing group is an even more closed community of pilots than NASA's Astronaut Corps!

Sometimes ya just gotta overlook the dramatization...

Thunder Over Reno's website has a press release saying they had a showing of the film in Fargo ND last Friday and Saturday.  No information on whether they were going to do a general release to theaters.  Since I haven't seen any publicity for it I'm guessing it'll end up being just another DVD release.  That's a real bummer.  I was looking forward to seeing this on on the big screen.

They had a couple showing during the air races down at one of the casinos.  Couldn't make it personally.   As for the dramatization, of course, they have to cause theres not many people who would enjoy watching a movie with a punch of loud airplanes flying in circles for a couple hours (present company excluded of course ;D)
