LA PLATA, N.M. -- A La Plata woman is hospitalized with burns after catching on fire Friday night while pumping gas.

San Juan County sheriff's deputies said 19-year old Brianna Sanchez was injured after flames shot out of the tank and engulfed parts of the vehicle.

Witnesses report seeing Sanchez playing with a lighter right before the incident.

A person at the scene was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

Sanchez was taken to San Juan Regional Hospital with burns to her face and upper torso.

It says on the pump no open flames/no ciggs.

What also gets me is that it says to shut off your car, yet I here in ND/MN I see people all the time leave their car running while pumping gas.  Scares the hell outta me.

I've seen people do it up here.   If you want to leave your engine running while you pump, you need to break down and just buy a diesel.  ;)

Geeze, the truck stop was one of the few times I'd ever shut my diesel down, and it was always at the fuel pump.  I would have really hated it if a spark had come flying out of my engine and floated down into my open fuel tank...  that would have NOT made my day!

Oooh, scary!  A friend of ours who spent many long months in a burn unit, said there was a poor guy in there, with terrible burns, who had been injured at a gas station.  He shut off the engine in his older vehicle -- as is correct -- but left the keys in the ignition, and was pumping gas like he always did, when some moron ran up, jumped in the driver's side to steal his car, cranked it, and drove off in a squeal....  the hose broke and the entire gas station was a ball of fire, with him standing right in the middle of it all......  I mean, what are the odds of THAT?  I guess he finally got out of the burn center, but he had a terrible and arduous road to recovery....  pretty scary!!!   ::eek::
