It's your lucky day! I did this here yesterday as a "warm up exercise"! :) Is that approximately what you look like? The 65x65 one should work well in here!

Well... I don't see this as a big threat... Many people already have a cool avatar anyway! The worst thing that can happen is somebody asking for it and I go "sorry, got no time" or "maybe later..." ;)

LOL... that's got to be one of the best avatars I've seen... ;D ;D
Would you be terribly offended if I showed it to some people I know that skydive on another site??? ???

Glad you like it! :) Go ahead! I think maybe I will put it into the "various stuff" section of our website to the other avatars anyway! But tell 'em where you got it from, okay? ;D

Let me put in a good word for you Jim! I mean after all that "rough" time we spent together in WMC....

I had a good idea. How about you guys make up some sort of contest and the winner gets a personalized avatar.
Title: Re: Avatar request..
Post by: Stef on January 27, 2006, 03:12:27 PM
@fireflyr: Hm, okay, give me some time! what is the typical characteristic of an airtac pilot? (since an avatar is rather small, badges on a jacket won't help). Do you guys wear red caps or something like that?
@mark: good idea! We'll do that if we're really flooded with requests some day! ;)

Hit Mike for a description---he knows what I look like or the suck and blow airplane that I fly,
I'm afraid if I envision something it will be rather like a Norse God or some kind of square chinned, resolute hero. Inflated egomaniacal self images are SOOOOOO prevalent among aviators, you know!
Title: Re: Avatar request..
Post by: fireflyr on January 27, 2006, 08:36:19 PM
Actually, now that I think about it---I suppose the "deer in the headlights" look with a headset is common to Airtac pilots plus we're dizzy half the time after flying tight right-hand circles for 3 and half hours at a time!

I guess you know the saying "Good things come to those who wait"! :) Well here's the avatar requested by fireflyr! Hope you like it! I just couldn't resist putting some fire in the picture... and just after I was finished I noticed that I made bird out of you, while so far all the others were human... hmm... funny, it seems that drawing chickens comes naturally to me!

Hi Jim! I thought I'd set it up for you... If you want to choose it somewhere else, I think you'd have to save it somewhere on your computer and then upload it again (to wherever you want to use it). Right now the image file is on our server, so it should be safe until the next serious update! ;)

Fantastic Stef! I just switched to cable today and I've barely got this thing running so I'll get one of my grandsons over soon to show me how to get it!!
Thanks again and don't lose it---I'm pleased and excited--which at my age doesn't happen enough.

Hey Jim!
You can also save your new avatar by right-clicking one of the two pictures in my brothers post and then just click on "save picture as". That way you can save it somewhere as a jpeg-file. (if you want)...

Hey, can I have one? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze? I've made contributions to the forum, bought the book and two shirts! And linked the site from my Yahoo360 page. And told people about it. Let's see, anything I've forgotten about in this blatant attempt to brown nose? No, I think I covered everything.
I've always imagined a Turbomallard avtar as a grimacing duck wearing goggles with turbojet engines under each wing shooting through the sky...
Actually, kinda sad that that's all I aspire to, but hey, I'm realistic. You take what life hands you. And, frankly, anyone who gets to fly an aircraft is one lucky SOB. As John Monnett put it to me: Out of all of human history, to be born now and in a place where you can learn to fly, be lucky enough to afford it... the odds are astronmomical. Win the lottery? We've already won it!

Hey Turbomallard! Wow, you sound like a real fan!! Of course you'll get an avatar... seems like that's the least we can do! :) But I'm terribly busy this week, so you'll have to be patient! Give me a week (or maybe two)! So, should I draw the duck with a brown nose then?! ;D

Hey, no rush... I'm just very appreciative of your time. As for the "beak" yellow would be more appropriate... but I suppose it could be fixed in Photoshop by me if it's the wrong color (I LOVE technology (especially when it works)!)

@ Frank: There's bird types for everyone out there! ;D @ Everybody: I just revoked the maximum avatar size... so you can display bigger ones than 65x65 Pixel now. If it's too large it won't fit though. I think 120px is about the maximum now...

Haha! Why not add a couple more characters?! ;D Seriously, I think the concept should be a bit simpler (especially reduced to one character), and you also can't possibly show a certain aircraft type AND get a shot on the face. Can you think of something? And what are "foggles"?! ;D ;D ;D

Here is an idea... and I know it would take a long time to do... but if there were avatars for all the regular posters, then they could maybe appear now and then as passengers on a roost-air flight! :) (Ok... if Chuck is flying, that's one occassion where I will have my parachute handy) :)
Just a thought... I don't know what I'd have for an avatar for me... I did once earn the nickname "Submarine Commander". Seems that I had, at one time, turned my military service cap (the hard-billed USAF type) backwards and was speaking Russian while pretending to torpedo things.... yes... I was very drunk at the time... one one of two occassions where I got plastered... but the cause was just... it was at the end of an exhausting two weeks of 18 hour days on duty doing SAR work. I guess then I would be more like a "Buck Murdock" from Airplane II. You remember... Bill Shatner (Captain Kirk), played him... the commander of Alpha Beta Base on the moon. The lights are flashing and their blinking.... SOMEBODY PULL THE PLUG! ;D ;D

Title: Re: Avatar request..
Post by: Mike on March 30, 2006, 07:02:50 PM
You should post a picture Ted! This will help as well.
I like the idea you proposed. Every now and then we need a few "extras" in our strips. And I am more than certain, we can fit in plthijnx as well! ;)
Edit: The more I think about it the more I like it. "FireFlyer" is the first one who comes to mind as the character of an "experienced" pilot in a bar giving Chuck all kinds of advise. Not sure where to fit in the "Turbo Mallard" yet and we already have a bunch of crazy Skydivers scripted for a few strips you guys will see later. More input guys!!

Oh ! Just thought of something! Maybe we can turn Ted in some sort of an engineer kind of bird who knows a lot of stuff and has good explanations to Chucks questions which, of course, Chuck never understands. Kind of like "Mr. Wilson" and "Tim -the toolman- Taylor" in the show "tool time"....
Title: Re: Avatar request..

Mad Hawk, love the idea, and I'll be glad to see something else than a skull, it's scary, although at least you yourself am friendly :)
Lol, yeah Home Improvements (called: Ten Thumbs in danish) was a great show as long as one understood the comedy in it, and luckily I did.
Fireflyr does seem like the wise old bird indeed, but who's gonna be Al? :D And just out of curiosity, would I fit in anywhere in that universe? Just curious as to how other people see me, no problem if you haven't thought of it, I'm just trying to enjoy the company here (I've had a rough day so this is helping), actually have a list of pictures and stuff to post but I'll reserve it to when I get really into the mood so I can make the posts good.
Thanks for the friendly atmosphere :) Frank
P.S. I'll try and see if Racerplanet can't lend you some smilies they would be easier to recognize for me at least, the normal smilie looks like a croocked smile for instance but I need to check up on smilie copyrights first off of course, fair is fair.

Well, I am a software engineer... so that works ;D I loved the Tim Taylor character :) Remind me to tell you guys of the time I got bucked off a horse at a full run on my first date out with a girl... ended up in the hospital over the weekend... somehow she never went on a second date with me... hehehehe ::) Uh oh... I really DO sound like Tim Taylor now! :D ;D :D
I'm glad to see that you like my idea :) I'll work on getting a photo posted tonight. I don't have any on my PC here at work :)

The Mr. Wilson type is good too :) I'm not yet working on my CFI, but I do volunteer time at the St. Louis Science Center here, and give people the chance to learn a bit about aviation and how to fly around a bit using MSFS 2004, so I do know that I like to teach. I'm about 3/5ths of the way through my Instrument Rating training currently. Got a bit over 300 hours, so I'm doing my Instrument via Part 141.

keep at it Ted. I can't tell you how much $$ i wasted starting and stopping for that rating. and depending on where you are and what school you go to will dictate how hard your CFI will be. a few years back i tried twice here in houston where you have to use the FSDO. that aint easy!

Haha!! If we really pick up all those great ideas we would have to make a movie! :D
Fireflyr does seem like the wise old bird indeed, but who's gonna be Al? :D And just out of curiosity, would I fit in anywhere in that universe?
Actually, I think you would be the perfect Al character! Because sometimes you come up with perfectly logical and rational explanations when everybody else is just monkeying around! ;D ;D
But before everybody's volunteering to become a cartoon character, here's three things to consider: 1) We can't turn everybody into a character. Well maybe if we're as big as the Simpsons some day and have an animated series... (I just wanted to say this here, because I'm the one who has to draw all this! ;D ) 2) It usually takes us a long time from the idea of a character until he finally appears in a comic. 3) You're going to be made fun of!! Heedless of your personal feelings! ;D The "real" Jason has already asked us if he really is such a terrible student. No, of course he's not!
Having added these words of caution, bring on the ideas again! :)

i've got a story/comic that everyone can relate to and probably 90% of us have done. let's see a show of hands of how many of us have been walking accross the ramp and you're not paying attention and you bang the sh@% out of your head on the aileron of a cessna. i've done that more than once and have also ran into the horizontal stabilizer of the geronimo. more than once hmmmm, this is giving me an idea for a new thread.......Freddy

That's right, it's Terminal Velocity! I knew it was a Charlie Sheen line.
Yay, 2.5 pts!
Never hit my head on a Cessna, but I did crack my head on a flap rail on a PC-12. Had just given it a bath and was squeegeing the floor underneath it. Walked underneath the wing and found myself on the floor. I was also pre-flighting a Seminole one day and stood up into the prop. It caught me between my shoulder and my neck. Sort of a Piper version of the Vulcan Neck Pinch.

Oh yeah... done that!! You know how the aileron on a Cessna has those nice little ribbings .... well, I was preflighting and someone came up behind me to ask a question, we spoke, and I forgot how close I was to the aileron. With the gust lock still in, it wasn't moving anywhere, and I turned around and WHAM... ended up with a nice set of diamond shaped indentations right along my forehead! Luckily it didn't cut, or scar as a result.... that would have been a unique fashion statement indeed!

Thanks :) I know what you mean about wasting money with the start and stop syndrome. I had that happen to me during my initial flight training for a short while.
Going through the FSDO would be quite nerve wracking indeed!! It might actually make one less nervous though on the checkride since they probably grill you pretty well :) I know the local FSDO rep here, and he's a terrific guy. I sure wouldn't want to get him upset at me though :) He's a former Vietnam chopper pilot in fact, and makes the rounds at the local Flight Safety Clinics. He gives out little red adhesive dots that he asks you to put on your watch. They are to get you to stop, and think, as a memory mnemonic, so you can double check yourself that you've done everything you are supposed to do on flight prep before you take off. Got one on my watch right now in fact. As Fred (the FSDO guy) says.... it also can be a conversation starter... "What's that red dot for?" ;D

Oh yeah! THE CESSNA DIAMOND !! We should do a strip about that, or at least a single-panel-joke for the book and the voting incentives... Good idea, I am sure Chuck has had (maybe a few too many) those before. ;D

i've got a story/comic that everyone can relate to and probably 90% of us have done. let's see a show of hands of how many of us have been walking accross the ramp and you're not paying attention and you bang the sh@% out of your head on the aileron of a cessna. i've done that more than once and have also ran into the horizontal stabilizer of the geronimo. more than once hmmmm, this is giving me an idea for a new thread.......Freddy
I've done it. a few years ago I was in charge of a cessna 172, and I was checking it after a flight when my phone rang, I got it while still walking to the cockpit, and was checking the caller ID while suddenly BANG! I knocked my head with the wing strut... it was a busy afternoon so I heard a couple of laughs and laughed at myself. it turns out the caller was my girlfriend at the time, who also laughed when I told her

If you use firflyr in one at least paint flames on my walker--my nurse here at the old pilots home thinks it gives me some panache!---Turns the old biddy on!!!! GRRRRR! ;)
Ted is without a doubt the one for Wilson, a virtual fountain of information that Chuck will never understand.
Them little bitty forehead marks are the Purple Heart decoration of experienced Cessna pilots but if you think walking into a wing while talking on the phone is dumb, lemme tell you about the day I was eating an ice cream cone and talking on my phone when I had to yell at the fuel guy about topping off my tanks and after yelling at him I resumed my phone call by jamming the ice cream into my left ear!!! :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Looks like if Mike works up an Avatar for me it'll have the lower half of my face covered by the P.O.H. or the FAR/AIM :)
Look at it this way, fireflyr... you could have a new career in sales. After all... isn't what you did the very definition of "cold calling" ? ;D

that is really kind from your side!!! I have to be honest, I was worrying that maybe I'm talking tooooooooooo much, but it was a long time I was not enjoying soooooooooooo much either! :D :D :D (......and if I do talk too much, you tell me/confirm me, okay????!!!)
So, having an avatar designed from Stef surely is a great honour! But, I wanna be sure that it is not going to keep too much time and it doesn’t bother you doing so, okay? And well, thanks everybody!!!

Haha! Well, I'm not an expert on the feminine psyche but I think I speak for all the guys in here when I say that we know better than to tell a woman she's talking to much! ;D
No worries! It usually takes some time, but I'm sure I can come up with something... I'm thinking along the lines of a pilot "chick", maybe with a headset... Any other suggestions or requests? (keep in mind that avatars are usually very small)... What's your favorite color, by the way?

Guess who taught "copterchick" how to fight fires and showed her how to fly in the mountains??? (of course it doesn't show in her blog)
I even hired her to work for us this year but it didn't work out well. I trained her some but then Coastal Hellicopters stole her away from us. We are good friends and let me tell you, even if you WERE 10 years younger, she would still give you a run for your money. I won't get into any details....

If I was ten years younger I'd still be OLD------but there's a silver lining to being considered old----you can flirt with every woman you meet and since they consider you harmless they'll flirt back!! You have a ways to go to catch up with John Monnett, Sr. He's 94 now, I think, give or take a year. His son John is the designer of the Sonex, Sonerai, Moni, Monex, etc. They have a great party every year at their Sonex facility at Oshkosh during Airventure. John Monnett Sr. is always surrounded with women the ENTIRE night, their eyes sparkling, faces lit up with smiles as they listen to him. They won't give *me* the time of day, but they'll spend the entire evening with him! It's just not fair!
John Sr. is just plain remarkable in every way. He still drives from the Chicago area to Oshkosh to help out with the company builder workshops. One time I was talking with Tony Spicer, former USAF F-4 backseater who flew in Vietnam, and John Sr. punched him in the arm as he walked past. Tony let out a yelp and messaged his arm for the next several minutes! If I live to be anywhere near John Sr.'s age, I hope I'm half as active... and get half the attention from women he does.

Hey! I won't let that stand here! Accusing ME of sexism!! Me! :'(
Your avatar took 5 days. The one for FlyingBlind was done in three!! I admit that usually it takes a bit longer... It really only depends how it fits into my work-flow...
But anyway, I'm glad you like it! And thank you very much for the kiss! (now I really need a blushing smiley...) Too good my girlfriend doesn't check in here, hehe! ;D
As for the idea of putting characters into our strips... We've been thinking about that, and it will definitely happen some day! It's just that we haven't really decided yet which one. But a female pilot that gives Chuck a hard time is definitely a great idea! :D
@Steep: Haha... a chicken leg?!? No way, that's too macabre!! But on the other hand, if I remember it right, the Duck family (Donald & co) also eats turkey at Christmas...

Stef, I hope I did not hurt, it was just a joke, actually! But if I did, I delete the message........ :) |:)\
That’s the habit of frequenting almost exclusively friends male or doing things that women usually don’t (let’s say I never took a cooking or sewing lesson or an aerobic course, instead did muay thai boxe, off road, shooting and things alike!!!). I (almost, yes, almost) never found a different treatment (surely no discrimination), when I was used about hearing other women saying: “I could never do that. I would be the only woman….and you're surely being discriminated”…....
And yes, if my memory is sound, donald duck did eat the turkey.........

No, I was just kidding! ;) I'm not hurt so easily!
Okay, then!! I was not sure, I sometimes have the idea that maybe a joke or some humor get lost in translation! :)

You guys sure are right about this forum being addicting though.
In the beginning I thought we will have this for everybody to chat and I'll stop by here or there to see what's going on and now, several hudered posts later, I keep trying to find computers and chance I get while I am on the road just to keep checking in and see what the other chickens are up to now..... 8)

It is very addicting. I never really have a chance to get on a computer at work so when I get a day off I'm on the computer checking in.

errr stef/mike was going through this and was wondering if you could do a avatar for me if you are still taking requests? i like hedgehogs so could you do a crossed eyed hedgehog mechanic with a learners plate round his neck (red L on a white background) holding a spanner? , we have L plates for our learner drivers so you can avoid them at all costs dont know if any other countries have the same thing. but any other animal or bird thats easy for you to draw will be fine.
Thank you ::bow:: ::bow::, Ian
P.S even tho im a poor mechanical student when my next uni funds comes in i will buy many things from your excellent shop (is this enough grovelling yet?)
