Title: Anyone heard of a John Derry-roll? (Knights of the Sky/Sky Fighters)
Post by: Frank N. O. on June 19, 2007, 01:26:33 AM
I heard this in the early part of the movie, anyone heard of it? I didn't really see it in the movie, although so far (seen 30 minutes so far) the aerial filiming is absolutely awesome! And it doesn't hurt there's a strong yet still beutiful femine blonde amazon pilot in the movie either (I use the term amazone for a strong woman and don't link anything negative to it, not sure if other people do). I use the term amazon also because while being femine she's nevertheless taller than me according to imdb. But that's fine, I have no problem looking up to a woman, here's a |:)\ to women pilots! (yes I know she's just an actress but I can dream can't I? Sandra Hess from Pensecola wasn't bad either).

ok old thread time again but a derry roll is a roll (well duh lol) and you pull out of it in the turn for example a roll to starboard you pull out into a turn to starboard same if you turn to port, i think it was a old ww2 battle of britain tactic made up by us brits.......but if any one else knows better please correct me.

I thought "I'll answer this" then found I couldn't describe the manourvre without waving my hands (and preferably a toy aeroplane around)
Roll as if into a turn in one direction but keep the roll going past inverted as you turn until you can pull out facing ninety degress in the *opposite* direction the to direction of the intial turn...
Or to put it another way -- instead of banking 60 degrees to the right to turn right, roll through 300 degrees left to get to the same point and pull from there.
Hard to describe but you've almost certainly seen it at any airshow you came to name. Looks great.
