The take-off and obliteration of a R44 on the main page in an embedded video. I first saw the hooters-joke ATC line in the corner and then played the video of the R44 and holy heck that thing got torn to pieces except the cabin. Was it the rotorblades that cut the tail off or what? I must say after this and another helicopter take-off that nearly killed a guy on a ship at see then I really think that maybe most people can fly a plane, but a helicopter takes an expert!

Ouch...
He hit the hanger with one of the rotor blades, I can't tell if the tail came off then or if it just broke off when it hit the ground.
I believe that robinsons do have a problem where rotors can hit the tail though. I seem to remember reading that it is a known danger during an engine failure with those ones...

Here are two more things:
Another landing on a parkinglot, but this looks a lot dummer and more dangerous than the danish story I posted last year. http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=170096 Norway, forgot his cellphone, landed on a parkinglot, got 14 days of jail, lost his license, quit his job to avoid getting fired. 46-year old pilot, said the jail term was too tough, but the goverment wanted to scare other people from doing such a stunt it's written. Personally I think that there is insane, that's 3x worse than the danish story I posted some time ago.

Btw, Mike and Co. it's not at all to make all helicopters or all helicopter-pilots look bad, I'm just asking to try and learn more about them, and most of these news I've heard are about helicopters not planes, but when I find some about planes I'll ask about them too (if I may).

Looks like they hit a much larger wave and it basically shot the unsecured helicopter into the air to me. May have been combined with a large wake slowing down the ship as well maybe?
I believe they were untying the skids from that netting, looks like it was there to secure it so it wouldn't bounce around on rough seas...

I'd say wrecking the tail rotor would qualify as a full blown accident, though not a complete wreck. ::thinking::

Ya know, Im no expert on copters, however there are a few guys here in the house that fly them (getting their commercial in them). If i remember right, they told me that the rule in the states is as high as prudent and safe or something akin to that. So, th erotically speaking (if that rule holds true) that guy for landing in a parking lot would be ok, as long as he could prove that he put no one at risk or danger. I know the local hospital here doesn't have a helo pad and they land their copters in the parking lot all the time.
Believe it or not, Gulfstream can back me up on this one, GFK airport is about 5 miles outside of town. Because UND aerospace brings in so much money for the State of North Dakota, we get a lot of senators and representatives up here to check it out. They put a wind sock in the middle of student parking near the aerospace complex, and would ferry the senators into town, a whole 5 miles maybe, and land them in our parking lot. ::banghead::

Never actually saw that happen, but I wouldn't put it past them.
Altru actually has a pad separate from the parking lot. It's between the North lot and Columbia, so they have to load patients in an ambulance and drive them the 75 yards to the emergency room.

I've heard of surveying people landing in folks' yards for lunch breaks etc. I think that's getting kind of iffy for one because I believe you're still supposed to have permission to land somewhere.

Isn't a helicopter kept on the ground by having the collective all low? If so wouldn't that have prevented that lift-off, and if not then why were they trying to get airborne under those conditions?
About the landing then it looks like the norwegian landed in downtown on a normal public parkinglot, IE: no permission, no warning etc. It's not just a matter of the law but about why the laws are there which in the free "western" world is usually a matter of safety. For instance a very local example: The danish traffic-law has a core-line saying: drive according to the circumstances, don't drive faster than you can see. 1 week ago a lady drove into the harbour because it was dark and in the middle of the night and she though the cableferry was docked. 1. Appearently she couldn't see the lack of road, the white stripe meaning stop, and didn't care to wait for the operator to give permission to board. However just a few days ago they dived there again and found another car with two drowned people in (the electronics had short-circuited appearently). Now the media is screaming death-trap. Incredible. If you can't see where you're going, would you continue to drive, especially when you knew you were driving towards a ferry?
And back on topic about aviation while still staying on the topic of looking where you're going, take a look at these two videos. After the other videos I've seen then I'm surprised how stable the helicopter is after that wild maneuver. About the second one with the planes, how the heck can you miss that? Even if it's a uncontrolled airport then isn't it normal procedure to still use the radio to call out intentions? And how do you miss such a plane? I'm not aiming to act perfect and saying others are morons, I just want to know so I can learn without having to make the mistakes myself.

Ahh i see about altru, i just seem in land there.
And if you look, behind clifford hall, you can see a big windsock, or at least whats left of it. And the rotating beacon there too, thats left over from those days.
