Though I have no idea what it actually is, id say you're right with the Cassutt type. And I have no idea what yours is. Got one for car lovers out there...
Looks like a bastardized Rutan something-or-other.
Is it a Midget Mustang hanging from the rafters?
This is a HARD thread -- I don't know my own name half the time.............. ::loony::
8)
Mallard: I just read the N-number and found out the company it's connected to: WOW! First I find out (Ettore) Bugatti designed a wild plane and now (Colin) Chapman!? Wicked! Just a shame his twin-jet ultra-light design wasn't built but at least he got Rutan to make that there instead from what I could read on this article http://members.fortunecity.com/alicat1/type91ml.htm
That pointy nose reminds me of the second of the lifting-bodys that helped develop the NASA Shuttle Orbiter and enabled it to land after re-entry without having to have extra engines/fuel on board.
Frank
So Frank, what model IS that? I'm in the "Rutan bastardized" category too -- so what exactly is it?
And, I think I am wrong on the one in the rafters... Hmmmm... will wait on my next guess... Obviously TurboMallard gives me WAY more credit than is due...... quack, quack..........
Thought Frank's bird looked German. I'd guess Junkers or Fokker.1. Nope and Nope but you're getting closer.
Isn't it swiss???? A old pilatus maybe????? ::thinking::
Isn't it swiss???? A old pilatus maybe????? ::thinking::
Didn't that one show up in a previous "Name the Plane" thread?
Phil
And it's not the swiss flag, it's a medic symbol. It was costum-built to be used by Zone-Rescue (later combined with Falck rescue which exist to this day and also work with the county with fire-engines and ambulances) to pick up sick people from the many small islands we have.
http://www.flymuseum.dk/fly/flytekst/kz4.php
Btw, the high-altitude plane is not the Gossemer Albotros is it? Or was the one with the guy powering it by a bicycle inside?
Frank
Hey, Happylanding, don´t land like that, against stone walls and three times ::knockedout::
the one that looks like a bike....is it E.T.'s?!?Actual clasification is "ManPowered" ::banghead::, but "WomanPowered" ::complaining: is allowed also...E.T. went home. ::rofl:: There was a craft like this that crossed some straight of the Mediterranean, Icarus if I remember well. Did the crossing (Greek islands) and crash landed, ::knockedout:: (the pilot is the engine, must have been tired!) but established the record.
DonYan |:)\
Hey, Happylanding, don´t land like that, against stone walls and three times ::knockedout:: same thing happened to me with Frank "watsit" plane (unpronunciable for most f us mortals not SkandinAvians, just ChickenAvians ::rofl::) They really have some "flying oddities" over those islands. Never heard of it before, I was compleately out of the track! ::bow::
And Frank, you are close. Here is an Albatross, the other is unmaned. Gulfstream Driver is really on it: only yhe name missing! ??? (forum is NAME THAT)
I have no manners: wellcome, Gibbo_335 from Australia. I also noticed the nacelles...very de Havilland. The tail is not. You must have some flying oddities over there in MadMaxLandia...
DonYan ::wave::
The delta airplane in the pic I posted is a Delt-Air 250. Only one was built.Interesting; a pity he didn´t live a longer aviation carreer... |:)\ You are right about (and not only in Aviation) a Society that believes covering the Sun with one finger (ussually the midle one) ::sulk:: is "Safer". Reminds me of the Ostrich that buries her head to avoid Danger... ::whistle::
... we're MUCH safer today, even if the vast majority of us are flying designs made from kits... designs from professional designers with components fabricated by craftsmen.
... it's a frank discussion of the subject, something EAA would never print today... TM
We also have people like the Ruttans making research on strange configs and having success. Also I love the Ultralights, most of them with the "Experimental" stiker. Like the parachutes of Skydive: "Experimental" and "may cause death" stikers AND cigarretes with "may cause death" stikers TOO..."Being BORN may cause Death some time in the Future" should be atached to every newborn, then!
Good plane choice, ::bow:: Tutbo and lets see if we get News about that unsolved Australian Oddity. ::rofl::

Heres another Aussie (variant) machine for you all.... ;)
P.S the pilot standing on the wing is one of my best friends father who used to fly these in the 50's -60's.
Very good! So the Lady is remembered...Actually could lift more payload than DC-3, but never attained same notoriety. Now I would like to know what´s written on the nose, please ::whistle:: Copied from http://www.ruudleeuw.com/c-46_in_alaska.htm
DonYan ::banghead::
I must say, BrianGMFS that you impress me: it is an Aussie de Havilland Drover indeed! And the Curtiss C-46 is Maid of Money, it figures...my taste in ladies is at fault there.
Maybe (it´s a remote possibility, I know ::banghead::) this next one will be more dificult to name... ???
Here's another bird I see on a regular basis. Phil (tundra flier) can't comment as this aircraft is also based in Fairbanks.
"Dumbo" was the C-46 that I climbed into. The DC-6 was one of the un-named ones. In fact, I think I saw that bird in Galena today.

Hello there, ::wave:: Gibbo_335: I have been all day long aclicking and agoogling to no avail. I give up on that jet with tail booms...you have no idea the contraptions with booms I found, but none are this little two seater. ::banghead:: ::rambo:: ::complaining:

Thought I'd see the struts poking through the wings after the big "WHAM!", but all was good. ;) Good thing I was alone. Ever since I graduated, I've mostly been flying Cessnas. I always savor the chance to get in a low wing when I can.

Now as for the aeroplane from FlyBoyGil that looks like a Gypsy Moth ran up the back of a Gee Bee R2 .....Stipa-Caproni !!! Sorry, but there is a 3/4 replica flying out of toowoomba (just west of Brisbane) the lady who owns it also owns my favorite Aussie war bird a CAC Boomerang.

The 620 Gemini is resting in a hangar, covered in assorted bedsheets. They're not currently doing any development work on it, last I was there, but
the one they have is (IIRC) being kept flight ready.

That is correct. I believe there are only two left in the world that actually fly and are stationed in Canada.

I then looked at Don Yan's post a little closer, as well as Air Tac's.
Then I shut my mouth.
Bob: I suspect it could be a far-fetched joke from the animated sci-fi movie Titan A.E. where at the end the new earth was named Bob. I was actually thinking of paraphrasing the line the other person responded to after she asked what to call the planet and after he said Bob she said: you can't name a planet Bob. I thought of quoting the line and post: you can't name a plane Bob :D

Since I have never been on that part of the world, I don´t imagine the distances involved or the differences they have. What engine are you planning on using Phil? How about avionics?
Are the performance numbers similiar to a Super Cub?
I'm planning to use the Superior XP-360 with low compression 170hp cylinders so I can burn unleaded. But it's going to be a few years before I'm ready for an engine, so will see what's available then. I see Rotec is making a 150hp 9 cylinder radial now, if that turns out to be a good engine it'd look and sound sweet on a Bearhawk. 8)
As for avionics, the panel is pretty small, so probably just a pretty basic VFR set-up with a VFR GPS Nav/Comm.
Take-off and Landing performance isn't quite as good as a Stupid Cub, but it cruises at 140mph compared to the cubs 90-100mph. And it has 55 gal usable, so at economy cruise the range is 900 miles. Gross weight and usefull loads are similar to a Cub too.
Here's the specs: http://bearhawkpatrol.tripod.com/id1.html
Phil
Is that a reman'd Lycoming?
RE: mogas: will you set it up so it's E85 or E100 compliant? With some states wanting to mandate bio blends, might be something to start considering (most aviation parts are not compatitble).
Do you know what engine the prototype has? That's a wide hp range to use and I wonder what power numbers give those specs. An IO-360 putting out 200hp would be cool though, wouldn't it? ;)

The XP engines are basically Lycombings, but not certified. Click here for more info http://www.xp-360.com/
No, will just be set up for regular 87UL. Any alcohol is very bad in aircraft.
The performance numbers are for the prototype using a 170hp O-360 custom built by the designer, and fitted with a fixed pitch cruise prop. I may even drop down to a 150hp O-320, they tend be a lot cheaper than an O-360.

I found an article after my post about it, although they claimed a performance (climb) prop.
The problem with the Ethynol being bad might come to light if cars end up requiring it (that's why I asked).
Just think though, with 200hp you might have the cub performance *and* higher speed together. ;)
The performance numbers with the 170 hp sound really good actually...

Can someone ID these at Boise Gowen Airport?
I think there's a Delta Dart there and maybe a Thunderstreak or whatever it's called in the corner but I'm not sure if those two are Double Uglies (Phantom II's) or Harriers? Mary said she hasn't been in the southpart of the airport for 17 years so she can't say (from the chat).

Correct it is an F15E. And I guess its not so much unique about this particular airplane, as the model of the airplane in general. This was the first fighter model to be designed to drop the nuke.
QuoteCorrect it is an F15E. And I guess its not so much unique about this particular airplane, as the model of the airplane in general. This was the first fighter model to be designed to drop the nuke.
Actually, Both the F-100 and F-105 were used in the Tactical Nuclear bomber role in the 60's. The F-105 had an internal bomb bay for the larger H-Bombs while the F-100 carried smaller fission weapons. Not to mention the Genie Nuclear tipped air to air rockets carried by the F-89 Scorpion and F-106 in air defense squadrons.
For Vietnam, the USAF put a fuel tank in the bomb bay on the F-105 to extend the range.

I'll bite, Gilly. Its a Short Sunderland flying boat?
Short S.35 Shetland!
Frank
even more interesting: how do you land this thing?
can the pilot even see over it's nose? ::eek::
The key is the PIC relies on peripheral vision during a full-stall landing. That might be a challenge with a big flying boat, but it wouldn't be insurmountable.
[ Just pick a big body of water... you can pick a much much longer and wider "runway."
I forgot -- what Champs have pilots sitting in the back seat??!? They were designed to put the pilot in the front -- one of their best traits (and selling points) compared to a Cub.... ??? ??

Hmmm, if it's a Bristol 130 "Bombay" and my books aren't lying, your crew has to get another aircraft, since their current one has a service ceiling of only 25,000ft.

YEAH, That's the ticket!-------------I knew it was a Dornier but couldn't find the model number.
As I recall, it was a beefy looking beast when sitting in the water---haven't seen one on wheels but I remember being impressed by it's rugged looks |:)\
ok here's one for all you vintage buff's.
Am I close with ANY of those G-Man? lol
Fleet is the answer, soooooooooo----BEERS AND STRIPPERS FOR GIBBO ::drinking::
And we won't be flying it unless it's annualed BEFORE we sell it (but that's not likely) ::banghead::

WOO HOO ::drinking:: ::drinking:: , It's a nice nice plane Airtac, shame to sell it....maybe you and Mom could buy it and keep it at Mom's house ;D
OK, I'm not sure if all previous aircraft have been identified, or if this has been up before but here's one I just found and it seemed like a possibly tough one.
Frank
It is a Grumman Albatross. Note the fixed wing float attachment underneath the wing. Sad to see a marvelous old lady go to pieces that way. :'( |:)\Now that explains how it
Ok, not sure if this was posted before but I just bought a big aircraft encyclopedia and found this in it.
Anyone up for the challenge?
Frank
None right so far, however to give some help then the name does ring similar to Beechcraft.Beechsonofa?

Born in the USA? In 1904??
Hunh, THAT'S easy! ::sulk::
Must be The Soccer Mom....... ::rofl::
:D
Turbo, are you hinting that this is a Willy Messerschmidt design?

Art Mooney designed it? He was born in 1904! ;D
Art Mooney was a singer born 1911, Al Mooney (who I already thought it might be) was born in 1906. I've also tried people/companies Cessna, Piper, McDonnell, Douglas, Boeing (both of them) etc. and couldn't find anything.
Frank
Michael Smith?Sorry about that, chief...
Frank
Ah, cartoon-dog, I just know that rings a bell, now just to remember what dog. Given the appearent era of the craft then I doubt it was either Buckles or Odie, and probably not Snoopy either, or Marmaduke, hmmmmm ::thinking::
Frank
Interesting machine there Turbomallard, Great to know even Mt Wittman struggled at times!
the only thing is, I may have lost something in the trans-pacific translation, but i cant pick the relevance of the cartoon dog and "get Smart" Quote clues to the final answer... Can you fill in the gaps for a confused Antipodean? :)
thanks for the info there Turbomallard, much apreciated.
You dont do Cryptic Crosswords by any chance? :)
DonYan, if you buy it will you enter it in the Baja 1000 race? I'm sure you could be an overall winner of the race! ::cowboy:: |:)\IF you buy it, |:)\ I would enter & race it in the Baja...overall winner ??? ...quién sabe, Kimo Sabay !!! ::wave::
RC
I'm going to guess Convair XB-46.
TM
That is something which should never have been allowed to be built.Turbo, you have to understand government contracts.
*post censored due to level of sweary words*
McDonnell XP-67 "Bat"
Frank
Reminds me of a uprated engine variant of a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt ::thinking::
Is it a Curtis Wright CW-21 Demon or a CW p-60?
Ok Gil you NEARLY have me beat, I've exhausted ALL of my ww2 aircraft books and most resources on the 'net that I know about.
is it a Mitsubishi A7M2?
fecking Aussies always come in at the last second and steal the glory. ::sulk::
you were close Oddy ol' chap it is a Bloch MB-157 ;D :P
BEER DOUSING AND STRIPPERS FOR THE AUSSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: When I first saw it, I was wondering if it was a cross between a FW-190 and a P-47! Oh well. I wonder if anyone will guess your plane is a CAC CA-15 KANGAROO! ;D ;D
::unbelieveable:: ::eek:: you mean I got you stumped gil! I have managed to get you back for the Bloch 157 incident?
Its not a Junkers 187?
ITS FRENCH AGAIN ISNT IT!!!!!!! you probably know Digger since the Canuck propably told you all ready.
Sorry Cobber stress full night here doing home work for work ::knockedout::

ok gil now that is behind us lets gang up on Gibbo >:D:P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P
It looks like the fin and rudder were ripped off of an F4U Corsair!
Yep Tundra has it give the man a cookie |:)\
That is a Stearman XA-21 my fine Canadian friend
Is it a Douglas Dolphin or a Douglas Sinbad? RD2 or RD-4?
http://www.1000aircraftphotos.com/Contributions/Gies/2176.jpg
I've never seen a picture of this one before today, but I doubt it will be very hard to pick out in this crowd.
Oh, right. Me and my lack of html knowledge...
In that case if Cessna had built the Shackelton they would of destroyed the first one off the line.
ok I get the feeling I have seen this before, its either german french or italian ::thinking::
ok I get the feeling I have seen this before, its either german french or italian ::thinking::
Alrighty I'll give you a clue; It's an airplane (Drum roll, silence) These are the jokes folks. :P :P :P It would go well with pasta and pizza. ::) ::)
First go at this, but is it a Savoia-Marchetti SM.95?
The second one is a Edgley EA-7 Optica the clue is at the bottom of the photo (undatc you forgot to change the name of the jpg) the first one still working on.
The first one would be a Funk, I have no idea about the second one

I have actually heard of these before this post. Way before 9/11, they still cost over $100k dollars, and went about as slow as a Cherokee. It's basically a fixed-wing helicopter.
Sorry Fearless Leader I wont reveal my sources ::whistle:: But you left some clues that helped me track it down. like the Stars and Bars on the rear and the USAF on the tail. I'll look out a toughie for the forum to guess. but knowing the other Aero Nut in here (Gil) he will get in a lot quicker time than I did lol.
Don't let Mom see that pic... she's probably flown that exact plane....
Brian
DAM you Gibbo!!!!! Thats the last time I send you Farside cartoons.
It is no longer a oooooooohhhhhhhhhh shiny thing any more Digger it has been named as a Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor ;D and Frank you may have this turn instead.::bow:: ::bow:: ::bow:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: Nice one Cobba ;)!
MMMMmmmm ::thinking::I take it that either means: "I easily know what that is but I want to draw out the suspense." Or: "Is that photoshopped?"
No Franklin it means...MMMmmm this is gunna be tough!MMMMmmmm ::thinking::I take it that either means: "I easily know what that is but I want to draw out the suspense." Or: "Is that photoshopped?"
Frank
Hmm, I thought it looked familiar, I guess with some investigating I should've recognized the trademark design from Republic, is it a prototype?Sorry Franklin, i missed your quetion, yes it was one of two prototyes they were experimenting with different wing designs and mixed propulsion, here is another pic of it showing the unusual wing it had....
In any case, here's what I found (and I hope it's not already posted in the this topic).
Frank
Its purdy........for a glider ::whistle::It is dig' it sure is
Aye one of the XF-91's only lasted 90 seconds before it crashed.........sounds like one of my flights with a new R/C p51 that only lasted 10 seconds :-\:'(
The pilot (my dad) did not listen to the mech (me) and flew a CHROME P-51 in fog!!
not Ha Ha it was a birthday present, I had built it ended up cutting the tail off and sticking it to the wall of my bed room :-\
Would that be a Pterodactyl Ascender by chance?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterodactyl_Ascender
YES! that specific plane was bought by the Israeli Airforce as a light observation plane, after a terrorist flew into Israel in an hang-glider.
Now for another light aircraft:
Got a feeling it could be the dive bomber version of the P-51 Mustang called the A-36 Apache/Invader? P51B Razor back is a bit toooooo obvious.
Anyone else have a bid?Going once...
G-Man has me stumped ::knockedout::
what? no reaction regarding the CW plane ? ?
:'(
Let's see if you guys recognize this plane. There is only one of them that I know of . . .Dude! How could I've missed that? That is one of the coolest airplanes this side of a Valkyrie! |:)\ |:)\ |:)\ Julio putting on duct-tape is indeed a great touch! ::rofl:: Btw, is it an early C180?

@G-Man: yours really has me stumped, I am starting to wonder if it isn't photoshopped and if it really ever flew.... ::thinking::
i xxx ed out the plane G-Man cause I could still read it! ;)
not cheating on facebook! ! ! ::complaining: ::banghead:: ::rambo::

Nope, just had a bunch of rain yesterday, hence no burns today...
Keeping myself amused by doing S-130 and S-190 on-line. Hopefully have a Red Card sometime this week..... I just want to show up somewhere and hand that over when they ask for my card.... ::whistle:: ::whistle:: ::whistle:: ::whistle::
is that all there is to it? do those 2 courses online and they give you a card?
@ Mike: awesome!! does the other side look the same? if not, you should put Julio checking the oil or Hans hanging from the wing strut or something
Mike, is that a 175...if so she is in awesome shape.
Somebody has shown her a lot of love, she looks awesome. Thanks for sharing her with us.I saw the CW C175 and about ran away from that GO-300 engine.

OK this what I have so far...................I think its a Luftwaffe type captured at the end or it could be a Japanese type still not sure. Get the feeling I've seen it before in a magazine.
It does remind me of a HP Halifax but with a single fin ::thinking::
::thinking:: I gess that would be Goose Fat! (no chicken fat allowed here, I suppose: we are NOT in the Andes) ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking::It does remind me of a HP Halifax but with a single fin ::thinking::Well ding the bell, and chew the fat we have a winner! ::drinking::

looks like a ME-109 was chopped down into a racer. That's what helped me find the answer. A Messerschmitt 209 (ME-209). That was a toughy!
Nope, the DC-1 and 2 didn't have a swept wing. They swept the wing to fix a CG problem in the -3.::thinking:: Not so, acording to this top views. The ruder & fin are also larger on the DC-3/C-47
Phil
DC-4? but the markings are a bit early for that version and can't see the big cargo door on the side.::knockedout:: Stomped by this answer, I am! ??? DC-4 ??? :o Same early markings on same aircraft type, C-47 according to YanLù ::drinking:: (same non-visible cargo door problem ::banghead:: )
Oh come on now. That is a DC-2 variant if I know one. C-39 to be precise[/size]I blush ··· ::whistle:: and a Wikipedia image, to add spit on an insult! ::rambo:: = Douglas DC-2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_C-39)
