Is that a real helicopter, a prop, a joke or what? Shirley they can't be meaning this to be a real military aircraft?
Frank
Don't call me Shirley ::rofl:: ::rofl:: ::rofl::
It's gotta be a prop. Looks cool though.

Jim: I've seen a video from a company in Japan that has a real mobile robot suit (with a person inside, like many japanese anime movies) with a gun but I doubt it's going into military use.
Mallard: Haha! You got the joke! (it's really hard to write it since it's a verbal joke), and yes it does look like a prop.

DARN, I surely would have commented on that but I thought you were serious and I didn't want to sound picky ::wave::

Wasnt that helicopter in Golden Eye (james bond film). I think that was it or close to it, they stole it cause it was supposed to be EMP resistant or something.

Jim: Ah, I thought there was a reason, but yes I was joking because I do know that it's surely and not shirley.
ATC: No that was a european Tiger gunship which is a real military gunship helicopter. http://www.eurocopter.com/site/FO/scripts/siteFO_contenu.php?mode=&lang=EN&noeu_id=95&page_id=49

You guys trying to p*** of Mike and other "chopper" pilots? >:D
Ya know, honestly, you all look alike to me. Your all just dots on my screen. Some move fast, other slow. I hate slow ones.
It was pretty funny actualy, as part of my private course here at UND we have to observe another student pilot, which mainly consists of just taking a short airplane ride, and pointing out how much he screws up and the fact that you can do much better. Anyway, I took one with a buddy of mine in a Seminole (twin engine trainer we use) and the CFI on climb out turns to me and asks, "so how do you like the semi compared to the warrior?" i could tell he had a massive ego, and frankly i was tired and all i wanted to do was sleep. I turned back to him and said, "really, its no different to me, your just another blip in my sky that frankly moves to fast for me to sequence you in my VFR traffic, but to damn slow to put you in with my IFR guys, your a mut." I thought his droping mouth was gonna put a hole in the floor of the plane. He composed himself and asked, "ATC?" I replied with a grin and "Yup..."

thats the beast. hard to tell, all helicopters look alike.
The Tiger looks like an Apache got together with a Hind and had a kid! :D
It's not THAT ugly! ::sick::
I thought it looked like a GI Joe Toy.

ATC: ROFL That was awesome!! ::rofl:: ::bow:: |:)\
Phil: G.I.Joe aka Action Force had models of real birds when I was young, the Cobra gunship and the Tomcat (I had the later, had being the keyword :'( ). The later ones I've seen however were a bit on the cheap sci-fi side.

Actually with a trained eye, and relative motion, you can make out the difference between a chopper and a plane
I THINK NOT !!! ::complaining:
...since a "chopper" is a motorcycle and might not show up at all !!! ::complaining:

And if they use the Orange County Choppers Comanche Stealth bike then they aint seeing anything!
Frank
P.S. Did you know that someone in England made a car that looks like a F117 on wheels? Central cockpit, tons of edges just like the centerpart of the F117 (that btw is now also retired like the Tomcat I only just read). I saw it on Discovery but I haven't found it online ever, and since there's a raw small-series sportscar building in England that uses the Stealth as a brand name that only makes the search harder.

reading the whole story there it looks like the "helicopter" was some sort of a prototype of a stealth project that never got completed. Huey running gear... just like a Cobra....
pretty ugly.... almost looks like a "chopper" ;D
(btw ... my neighbors little mini Pincher is called "Chopper" and the little guy wears a little doggy sweater. Poor dog . . . )

Interesting question Mike. I guess I'd always assumed a sailplane was one type of glider. As opposed to say a Hang glider, or Para-glider for example.
Phil
That would be my opinion, too. Technically, a sailplane has a much larger aspect ratio than a regular glider, right?
Title: Re: Movie Helicopter?
Post by: Mike on January 23, 2007, 10:24:02 PM
hmmm... ::thinking::
We don't have any glider people in the forum, do we?!
I know that in Austria, the hot air baloon people get really upset when you say "flying" the baloon instead of "driving". Because aparently, since it's not using AofA and other aerodynamic prinicples to get into the air like birds and planes, it can't be considered flying....
All the things you have to watch out for when making a 3 panel comic strip. . . ::whistle:: ;)
But it this strip it doesn't matter because it would be just like Chuck to mess up the proper terms anyways.

The Space Shuttle is a glider---I don't think there could be anyone that would call it a sailplane! ::)
The shuttle is more of a brick with control surfaces. We were talking about it in my aerodynamics class a few years back, and it has a glide ratio of something like, .000001:1. And it makes sense, it actually cant fly anywhere, all it does it fall in the direction they aim it.

Yep, it falls alright, but there's enough energy to flare just before touchdown, just like a "copter" (Mike is sooooo gonna get me for that one) doing an autorotation ::sweat::

Works great for the shuttle AND for copters ! ("Copter" is fine Jim, BTW ::wave::)
Some helos glide further than a fixed-wing-minded person would think. Come out to CA and I'll demonstrate !

I dunno... Do you like gliding like an anvil?
Can't just about any airplane with an engine no worky worky glide all the way to the ground? (I'll leave it to you to define the glide ratio and distance.)

Yes and no. Its about finding the right glide ratio for that airplane. For instance in our warriors its 73 knots. At that speed the warrior produces the least ammount of drag for the maximum ammount of lift. This allow's you glide (or fall with style) for the most ammont of time. I dont know off hand, but if I remember right the glide ration on our warriors is someting like 9:1 ie it will move 9 units forward for every one unit it will drop (cant remember if its in feet meters or what but thats the gist). Gliders have some ungodly glide ratios, my friend flys them at the air force academy and he was telling me they have one experimental one that has like a 20:1 glide ratio. The lower the ratio, the shorter youll fly, er fall, the higher the longer you'll stay aloft.

20:1 is nothing, there are gliders that come into ely for the summer that have ratio's near to if not over 30:1 but those are extremely expenisive.

As well as I can tell, if there is a difference between Gliders and Sailplanes, I would think the Sailplanes have much wider wingspans, but much smaller cords in their wings. A glider could technically be any light airplane that is balanced to not have an engine.
I guess it would be a pretty fine line. Maybe someone at www.skysailing.com could help us out? I've met Bret Willat and company. Great bunch of people, and they run a fun little operation in Warner Springs, CA.
Oh, hey, I dug it up on my own. Here we go: http://www.skysailing.com/pages/faq.html#glider
Gulfstream Driver was on the right track with his answer.
