True, but with a 7 degree dew point spread, 20 knot wind, and 9 miles visibility you can still fly-----if you can get your frozen butt into the airplane ::eek::

Not to mention it's really hard on the engine in these temps. In KBDE right now, it's -23C (-10F). I think the low was around -20F this morning.

My mom just came in and told me that the police says it's directly lethal to go outside now either by car or on foot, and we're so dumb that we live on a small island with no bridge connection so we might be stuck on monday if it continues since even the new ferry can't negotiate that, or it gets covered in seawater flying on the open cardeck (we're tried that often, and let me tell you, a car covered in dried saltwater looks horrible, and the spray can easily go clear over 2-3 cars). We still have plus temperatures but they say we'll have a night with a couple of minus degree in a few days but so far still only grey skies and rain and stormy winds. The Peugeot really gets moved by the winds, even just on the highways (top speed 80kph / 49.7mph) the car can get blown several inches sideways and I need to adjust really precisely to keep the car from slaloming. We testdrove the Lancer in similar weather but on the freeway (110kph / 68.4mph) and it was clearly much more stable, in fact it was very stable with just a hint in the wheel that there was sidewind and it was stable even with gusts, and we confirmed it since we drove home with the Peugeot on the very same road just after that.
I read that Nevada has no income tax and it's listed as having some of the nicer roads to drive on (not much traffic etc.), I wonder how the pilot work is there, it can't be that bad since Mike moved there, unless of course he's changing careers hehe. I wonder how the weather is there though but I'll take a look at some internet sites and see what I can find. I also think it was Nevada that had a really cool aviation licenseplate for cars, and of course Nevada is practically my middlename, if you add an a at the end that is.

Frank, The definition of Nevada is "bigass, buttugly, windy, piece of desert where folks live in mansions or trailer parks--no middle class". Mike can live there because he doesn't gamble, drink or smoke and all day long he hangs around the door to the women's room at the terminal with a piece of cardbord that says "Hellicoper pilut will fly broke wimmen gamblers for personal favors" scrawled in crayon! >:D That's why there's less than 2 1/2 million population!

HAHAHA!! :D
Hey, don't forget about the 4% humidity when summer hits -- we were all enjoying our group nosebleeds last summer when it got really dry -- ahhh, ya gotta love it! ::)
As one of my favorite "kids" (i.e., smokejumpers) says jokingly every time they ship him to Nevada:
"NEVADA!! Drinking-Gambling-Whoring, 24 hours a day!! You gotta love it!!"
Seriously, though, I love it for work because we get to cover a lot of country, and the fire system is much easier to work within than in some other places in the country, and yes, it is wide open and empty... it's typical to fly all day and only talk to other fire aircraft. BUT -- where there ARE people, they are ALL in ONE spot.... e.g., Las Vegas, and Reno. Go 30 miles and you'll think you're on the moon. It's definitely a place of great CONTRASTS.
Come visit some time Frank! But, it's not what most people would call "pretty". It kinda "grows on you", as they say. 8)

I grew up in Nevada and its not that bad. Most of the worst parts are military area anyway and you don't go there. The road arent bad Frank, the best/worst thing is there straight and you can go fairly fast and still be legal(70 mph speed limit). But other then that my opinion is vegas sucks, renos a little better, and anywhere else theres only enough to keep you entertained for a couple of hours.

That'd be -46F, Frank. Though that wouldn't be far off from Celsius. Farenheit and Celsius meet at -40.
This is the "new" wind chill chart. Last Friday, in Baudette, the temperature was -12 (or so), and wind speed was around 8 mph.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/windchill/index.shtml
You can see that unexposed skin would freeze in about 30 min.
I don't understand how people can say that there's no such thing as wind chill. Those people need to spend a winter in Grand Forks.

Sorry I exaggerated Chukar, :-\ Sometimes my humor takes off in insulting directions but it really is meant to be fun. ::type:: ;D In reality, I had a great time when I was located in ELY because the fishing was good every time I went and I LOVED hiking the trails at Wheeler peak |:)\ Never got around to hiking or fishing in the Rubies but will sometime. I greatly enjoyed the train museum in Ely and the guys at the airport (Terry, Sid, and others) were a fun bunch of guys to hang with. BTW, does that motel manager still pump gas on weekends? Also, the sailplane people were generally fun (a few are jerks-like folks everywhere), and I made some good friends in town. All in all, it was a good summer and I'd love to come back sometime.

Hey UNDATC, you gettin' cabin fever? If you're pretty snowed in maybe we at CW could organize an airdrop of essentials. LOL Chicken Wings rescue flight! Well we do definately have the men and women for such a mission, including ATC's |:)\
Btw yes -46F is pretty close to -46C, -43C according to my conversion, brrrrrrr! One of the Blue Collar Comics said windchill was a joke and possibly something made for smokers lol. But it should work for others things too, like speed: Cop: Did you know I clocked you doing 80? Him: Yes but it only felt like I was 55 LOL
I hope at least the buildings there are a lot better constructed and designed than here. We got no insulation, gaps everywhere, drafts etc. etc. and that's compared to an old brick house I grew up in built in the 60s and this is a lot newer.

HAHAA--I just posted something to Mary about "truth in humor"--- AndI gotta tell you, my wife did exactly that a few weeks ago---cop stopped her for 80 plus and she convinced him that because it was a brand new truck and ran so smooth that she thought her speed was about 70 .......he let her off :P Of course, some tears helped too :'( WOMEN!!!! Some guys in our apartment building in Fargo did that. Except their heat wasn't broken. The window froze open, then they left for 3 days without telling anyone. The resident manager had quite a mess to clean up after the pipes burst.

3 or 4 years ago, GFK had a wind chill of -70F and Kupchella (the presidential dickhead) wouldn't cancel classes. His reasoning was that if classes were canceled, students would just play outside anyway. Student health had a record number of frost bite cases that day. Dumb ass.

I know I am coming in late on this thread, but let me comment on this for a second Frank:
Yes, if you like to do 70mph on a road that never even seems to have a single bend in it for over 30 miles but drive 2 miles below the speed limit in every little town (which is always 30mph or less) then Nevada is your state my friend !!! ;D
If you like your girls without teeth, . . . then Nevada is your state !!
If you like 120 degrees (close to 50 Celsius) during the day, cooling down to almost freezing and sometimes below at night, .... then Nevada is your state!!
...nevermind the income taxes..... :-X
The helicopter work there is awesome !! Imagine a whole state with only two paved roads !! It's helicopter country !!! ::wave:: YAY!!!
Oh! And Mike moved there . . . because of his woman! (surprised?!) (after all, Chuck is mainly based on my own life) not my first choice I gotta say!!
But like Mary said.... "it grows on you!" ::) ::) ::whistle:: ::silly::
(btw.... since my income comes from CA, I still have to pay their income taxes anyways.... but I am saving a little on the Chicken Wings side. . . .)

Yeah well I'm never going to find out. For just a few months ago I found a price of 5600 DKK for a round-trip ticket from Cph to SF and now I can't even get half of a one-way ticket for that money, so any trip anywhere is postponed indefinately because I simply can't afford that anytime soon. It'll take me 2 years to save up the money for the ticket now, and rental car and hotelroom and that's too long to save every penny when I live under these conditions even when it's to get me out of this situation :(

Frank, airline ticket prices vary by time of year. If you want cheaper tickets, you have to fly at the times of the year when they don't fill as many seats. I'll bet a few months ago this might have been the case. You may find there is a cycle to airline ticket prices. Don't freak out based on the peaks... just look to buy in the valley...
Title: Re: And you doubted me...
Post by: Frank N. O. on January 27, 2007, 08:20:37 AM
That's what I thought too. I tried searching for tickets to flights both now and in august, and it was the exact same price (and I search for cheapest possible). I guess I can try and search some more ticket places and try every month just in case both january and august are peak months since I don't have much of anything else I can do here so why not, at least it can't hurt. A shame the trip in a small plane would be more expensive and harder and longer since otherwise it would be a cool way for a aviation fan and aspiring pilot to enter the new world hehe.

Ok now I'm really confused. I set departure feb 1st, return feb 20th, and it gave me direct Cph-SF flights for just 1851+1811 DKK. I am so totally confused now. How can it go from that, allegedly including all taxes etc. etc. to over 10K DKK for a one-way ticket, all of them as the cheapest possible price and class etc. And all was at the British Airways site.

Round trip will be cheaper each way than one way 99.99% of the time. Sometimes round trip can be cheaper than a one way ticket even! (I've seen it).
Factors in price vary. Sometimes last minute is really cheap because they are desperate to sell seats, but if they've been selling a decent percentage of the seats for that flight they'll raise the price instead by a large amount to make more money off of people who *need* to go then. Sometimes staying longer helps as well. Time of the year you buy the tickets can be a factor, even if it's for a non peak time that you are looking at (say you buy tickets for a slow time during the peak season). In all cases, the dates to choose to go on, as well as when you buy the tickets, affect price.

hmmm... seems like you're new to the flight booking business....
If you book a flight in the off-season (always round-trip !!! btw !! always!) which in SF probably is Jan - April and you book it at least 3 months in advance, you'll be able to get the price down even more.
Oct - Dec is also worth a try with Oct being the best month to visit California hands down. But you have to watch out for holidays in that time frame (Thanksgiving, Halloween, and so on)
For example: If I was to book my annual flight to Austria on the 20 -23rd of December it would cost me $2000 USD because everybody wants to be home before Christmas. Since we don't have little kids in the family and it doesn't matter if we celebrate a day late, I fly out on the 24th. There are no lines at the counters and the flight is only $500 to $600 . . .
See? ;)

You just have to keep looking. You have an advantage, because it doesn't matter when you go. Have you tried Orbitz, Priceline, etc.? Sometimes it's cheaper through them, sometimes it isn't. The nice thing about using a site like that, is they check all airlines. You can find a flight you might like, then check the price on that company's site. Just takes some patience. ;)

First off, sorry for what's normally called thread-jacking, secondly, what are those names you said? Airlines, price-search sites? I've never in my life left Denmark for more than a few hours. The only vacation my family ever had was driving what we could reach and still make it back the same day or visiting my mom's brother who we no longer have no contact with (their decission, they never liked my dad or his family). So no I've never ever booked anything, not even a train-ticket.

Orbitz was the only site that had flights which is what I'm checking first, and it was pretty clear that BA is by far the cheapest airline to fly with and since it's got a good rep, it was also the one my mom and the church used for the atlantic crossing, then the airline seems to be set, now for the place to stay but I think I'd better use a specific thread to figure out where to go and what to see, but first off I'll check if I've started such a thread already. I did notice a segment on the CNN website that gave a few tips on rental cars, and the one that has special relevance to me was that prices at the airport often are much higher than just a few streets down even at the same company. I did a quick check on expedia.dk (I was redirected automatically) and I seem to be looking at rentalcost equal or greater than the airline tickets. That's 10x what the costs for a owned car, darn. At that price it's almost cheaper to get my own car transported over if it's a longer stay, of course, it doesn't really run well on the dirty low-octane gas you americans use (even when converting to RON std. it's still low-octane).
