Title: How would a real "Sea Duck" fly?

After this TaleSpin talk I've thought about what the experienced experts here would say about how a Conwing Aircraft Corporation Model L-16 Transport plane would fly in real life. Basically to me it looked like a Boxcar or Noratlas, with a long nose and amphibian abilities (it had landing wheels). Besides the Super-Turbo that was destroyed in the movie then it had these strange leading edge flaps it used far heavy g pull-ups. What kind of weight and performance could one have, also taken into considering period technology? And how would the flight characteristics be with it's shape?

Hmmm... Well, the wings look a bit small, but since the diagram clearly shows double row engines (R-3360's?) it probably had plenty of power. Judging by some of Baloo's manuvers I'd have to say it had LOTS of power.
The Hull shape is a bit concerning, there's no real step untill the very end, so would take a lot of elevator athority to rotate. Once in the air looks like it'd fly pretty well. Sort of an amphibious P-38. Bet it has a wicked stall though. ;)

Someone made one for X-plane some time ago. I didn't fly it myself, but I'm not aware of it having any problems. Being a fictional craft anyway, there'd be plenty of room to make it work. :)

Where did you get the 3 view drawing? Maybe I'll get bored and do a model to find out. ;) :))

I think I got the drawings from a Tale Spin fan-site a few years ago, and I just checked a few days ago, there are still Tale Spin fansites out there and they are current too! I didn't know there was one for X-Plane, sounds interesting, but since it is a fictional aircraft there would need to be some artistic license taken to make it fly in a game like it does in the series, or even close. And yes it clearly had some power, even without the Super Turbo that Baloo burned out to rescue Kit in the Movie (also cut and edited to be the first 4 episodes of the series), speaking of which I didn't know that Disney had a rule about never making more than 65 episodes no matter how popular it was or not, weird.
It could be cool to have a real Sea Duck made, but making an aircraft is probably hard when it's not a frame and a parachute with a Rotax in a backpack, otherwise I'd love to make my own little airplane as you've seen talked about in another thread.
That other seaplane looks cool, but I don't know the series, it looks very good though. In other flying fiction news there are the wingless things in the Last Exile anime, now there's a plane that can't be made in real life lol. Yoko Tsuno's little twin-engine jet could be cool though, Roger Leloup usually makes all places and vehicles extremely authentic, except the invented ones of course, but the little jet clearly looks like a small Eurofighter.
Back to Baloo btw, one funny autopilot wasn't it? :D The drink-dispenser is cool though!

Building a plane isn't that tough, designing one on the other hand... I'm helping a friend build a Challenger Light Sport Plane now, and have a set of plans for a Bearhawk Patrol waiting for when that's finished.
Last Exile's a great series! Though the last episode looks like it was suppose to be a second season. I was hooked the moment I saw the first episode was an air race. :D Yoko Tsuno I'm not familiar with, what series is that?
Back to Baloo, I'll bet with a little searching I can find a set of radio control plans.

Yoko Tsuno is a great comic-book series from Belgium made by Roger Leloup. I see a PBY Catillina!
There's even a window for the flight engineer to monitor engine instruments etc below wing in the center.

I seem to remember someone already making one and it seemed to fly ok, but how close in proportion etc. it was made was hard to tell from the videoclip of it I found.
