Title: Greetings from Oshkosh
Post by: Turbomallard on July 25, 2006, 01:32:23 AM
Greetings everyone from the Breese dorm at UW Oshkosh, my home for the week. Only the first day and I'm already dead tired... as usual!
I went by Trade a Plane today... and, as expected, they knew nothing about getting a free book if I did a chicken dance. Fortunately, I asked them before attempting any sort of spasmatic chicken behavior. They did offer to give me a free current issue if I did a chicken dance, but I declined since a) they were giving those to everyone anyway, and b) I already have a personal subscription.
At one point today I saw somebody wearing an "aerodynamics lesson 1" Chicken Wings shirt, but it was from too far away to drop my lunch and run over and talk to the guy.
Oh... and since I can never remember what the hell room number I get in the dorm, and since the keys aren't marked, I printed out a room name label and have it taped to my door ;D
As usual, this gathering kicks, butt, and you should ALL be here!!!!!

I was there with my "flight lesson" shirt. While waiting line, I had one lady say she liked my shirt, so I gave her a spiel about it. She asked me if I was a vendor cause of my media pass.
Now that I've made a direct referal to this website, and lots of advertising by wearing the shirt.....where's my commision??? :)

Thank you guys for the lines from Oshkosh!!
And Thanks Turbo and John for spreading the word !! |:)\ I am jealous! I really wish I was there... :'(
@John: We can certainly talk about commission. We did offer an Oshkosh deal before the show started ... ;)
@Turbo: Go ahead and do the Chicken Dance at the TAP booth anyways. If Carolyn writes me about a guy named Turbo doing a dance in front of her booth, I will still send you a free copy!

Well, I already have a copy of Book 1 and ordered Book 2, so I'm safe :D
I'm about as likely to do that as I am to sing at the Sonex party Friday night (they've threatened me again... I'll agree only when they agree to proof my manuscript on the history of Monnett's airplanes for accuracy, something they've put off for about a year).
I'm loading my Oshkosh pictures on a nightly basis now. Thing is, Yahoo doesn't put them in sequence, so they're sort of all over the place in terms of content. I haven't had time to check orientation or anything, either. But you can have a look if you're interested. Try this URL and see if it works: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/gromit63/album?.dir=6e88re2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos
Met Brian Terwilliger today, producer of One Six Right, which I own and have the soundtrack CD in my alarm clock (much nicer getting up to flying music than a buzzer). That was neat.

Were you getting food at the food court just north of Aeroshell Square during the afternoon airshow on Monday? I was in the shade of the nearby trees, trying to cool off with a couple of friends... we were all eating Italian Ice.
I plan to wear my Chicken Wings shirt Thursday...

Thanks. Uploaded some more tonight. The Lancaster came in today... it's very... large! Also saw the D Jet fly. And got to ask Erik Lindbergh a couple of questions I wondered about (e.g., why the original Columbia 300 he trained in was N211XP (in homage to the original Spirit of St. Louis) but later was changed to N142LC (turns out it was a different airplane though painted the same way). Hooked up with one my my CFIs from a while back who is now assistant chief instructor at U of Dubuque... we went to Fratellos at my suggestion, and based on the quality of the beer I now have a bunch of new friends at U of D :D
Hope to get to the seaplane base tomorrow to check that out. Then I have to do a phone interview with a new potential employer (UIS) who will not wait until I get back next week. I'll be doing the interview via cell phone, which should be interesting. I'll be on the field and we'll see how much gets drowed out by F-16 afterburner flybys!
Wish you all were here!

Wow!! Great photos!!
It's been years since I was able to go to Oshkosh! I went two years in a row when I was in C.A.P., and was too busy to appreciate the whole thing. Between training the ground handlers, standing guard, running mission communications, and going out on Search and Rescues both years, well, it left little time to appreciate the whole thing. I got bits and pieces though, and was in complete awe of the size of the event. That was back in the late 1980's.
I do envy you! Neat too that you met Brian Terrwilliger! I love One-Six-Right! Fantastic production... and great music too!
Keep us posted on things up there! :) :)

Here's a pic of your favorite mallard on the announcer stand with announcer Dave Keim (Dave ran the Prarie Airshow that I worked at for many years). If you look close you notice not just what hot muggy air does to people, but also that I'm wearing my Chicken Wings shirt. Was waiting all day to see if anyone yelled "Chuck is that you?" but nobody did. Plan to hook up with C310 Captain tomorrow afternoon.
TM
P.S. The F-22 flight display was beyond description! The thing went from slow flight on a low pass to pointed straight up afterburner see-you-later climb mode in seconds! F-16s and 18s do this on takeoff, where the pilot keeps the machine low, builds up speed, and thn pulls straight up, but this thing did it directly from slow flight mode! Damn... I want one.

Yeah!! Sportin' the Chicken Wings shirt!! |:)\ |:)\ |:)\ |:)\
Our goal is that by next year people will shout "Chuck, is that you?" clear across the ramp!!
Nice pictures by the way, Turbo

CR310Captain and I got together for early dinner today while he was on a break from his volunteer job shephearding airplanes. We didn't have much time but made the most of it and laughed a great deal and swapped stories ala Chuck style. More later (I need to run off to the Sonex party which even now is getting started...)

From the recent issue of www.avweb.com.... looks like Chuck may have been trying to make Airventure after all:
On the return home Saturday I heard the following exchange as I headed southbound passing Madison, WI. Warrior 98765 was heading north and already receiving a Flight Following Service from Madison Approach.
Warrior 123: Madison, Warrior 123. Can you tell me if there is a NOTAM or anything for getting into Oshkosh? Madison Approach: Say Again ...
Warrior 765: Yeah. Can you tell me if there is any kind of special NOTAM for getting into Oshkosh today?
[Long Pause]
Madison Approach: You're kidding, right?
Warrior 765: No, my [garbled] was out and I couldn't get anything before I took off. Can you tell me what the arrival procedure is?
[Longer Pause]
Madison Approach: (speaking slowly) I suggest you land before you get there and get a copy. There's one here at Wisconsin Aviation ... or Middleton is in your 10 o'clock.
Warrior 765: Standby ...
