Title: O/T Hobbies
Post by: Mike on February 21, 2011, 04:19:33 PM
So, I was kind of wondering:
What do you guys do when you're not flying, thinking about flying, saving money for the next flight lesson, read aviation magazines, and so forth....
What kind of hobbies do you have besides aviation?
Any?

3 years ago, I had this crazy idea of building my own house. I liked the experience and since then, my hobbies consist of building/reparing/upgrading friends/relatives houses. My house is build on a nice forest and my project for next summer, building a small (24X20) wood house accessible only by foot in my "backyard". I'll be powered by propane, heated by a fireplace.
Nice place for my mother in law to live during the summer months, cool place for me during hunting season, usefull for any friends/family at winter for a few days break in a quiet place.
Next 15+ years projects: building a garage large enough so I can build a RV-10 in it. That should occupy me until retirement and if I still have enough money to put fuel on the airplane, I'll go see Mike at Chickenwings booth on the 2030 airventure at Oshkosh for the unveiling ceremony of the first animated CW video. ;)

Since I can't fly for real, I spend a lot of time flying online with some friends of mine. I founded a group that focuses on Fire Fighting and flying Vintage aircraft. If the sun is shining, and thank god it finally is, I chase a little white ball all over some great real estate.

God damn that helicopter! how do I pass the catapult level?
I enjoy photography, got six years of experience under my belt, I bought my first, and still my main camera when I was twelve, it's a great Fujifilm Finepix S5200/5600, my other two are film cameras, not digital, one is the Olympus OM-1 MD,which, when it was released in the 70's was the smallest SLR in the market, and 40 years later it's still considered one of the best film SLR camera in the worlds. My other film camera is the Canon Cannonet, released somewhere in the 50's, it has a faulty light meter,so I use it mainly for long exposure, since you can lock the shooting button and the shutter stays open for as much as you want, my longest exposure is about ninety minutes. I have started to learn photography professionally only this year and recently opened an account on Flickr- http://www.flickr.com/photos/nitayr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nitayr)
My other hobby is music,I enjoy making music and finding new ways to make music or manipulating instruments to sound completely different, and, of course, I love to listen to music. I actually released an EP and at the end of producing an album, you can check my works here in my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?sk=lf#!/pages/Pitz/117899208244243 (http://www.facebook.com/?sk=lf#!/pages/Pitz/117899208244243)
And, of course, AVIATION!

A few nice pictures! On first page, what is this building looking like build on a cavern? You should change the name of your image file on flickr to be something more significant. This way, your pictures will be better referenced by search engine.

I would take a hint on this one too. I think you need to move the catapult more to the right but my helicopter is smashed by the box each time I launch the catapulp.

It's the Kibbutz's old grocery store, it haven't been used in a while. it's right after the fireworks in the Israeli independence day and the thing that looks like the northern light above the building is the smoke from the fireworks lit by the lights behind the building.

We use Flight Simulator X from microsoft. The actual fire scenery we design ourselves and then with a little addon we can drop fire retardant for aircraft, I use the C-130 and a Bell with the Bambi bucket. Loads of fun.
Its pretty fun and as close as us computer pilots will ever get to the real thing.

Is that Captain Sim's C-130?

What do you mean you design the fire scenery yourself? You can program your own stuff into the FlightSim? Like fire intensity, wind direction (and accordingly drift for the retardant), and the water you throw from the sky?? ??
that's cool!

We use the OA-10's for forward observers. It takes some doing, but we have now managed to be able to place the fire anywhere we want, it will react to real world weather which is available in the flight sim. And yes thats Captain Sims model, I love it. The smoke jumpers I found on a site, someone else did them but it works great, you get too low and you don't see no chutes, lol. I am trying to convert my favorite, the B-17, into a fire plane now, they were actually used up in Canada for years. Thanks for the interest.

Hobbies? Guitar, amateur photography, music, getting myself in trouble, doing things that may sound stupid to the average person, and of course, anything aviation related.
I saw that X-plane actually has fires already programmed in, and you can use a CL-215 that works. I haven't had a bunch of time to try it, but it really looks good. I want to try it with a bambi bucket though.

Play video games. Definitely.
Actually I rarely play video games anymore, I've substituted my aviation interests for that aspect of my life. But I still design websites and do a bit of art... http://meganbednarz.deviantart.com
Oh and I'm thinking of making stuff, mad science inventions and whatnot, but I don't have any space to work since I'm still living with my parents. Guarantee that when I get an apartment, I'll convert the living room to a lab ;)
Other various things include rock climbing, swimming, and laser tag.

laser tag rocks!! Go Barney Stinson ! ! ::wave::
Hey, how tight are you with the "Deviant Art" guys? I took a bunch of them on a helicopter tour all over LA last fall. Quite the fun bunch! We buzzed their building and they were all excited.....

Well, I used to have a salt water reef aquarium, complete with live corals, but I had to give it away because of my new job. Being away from home for 4 weeks at a time, that just wasn't maintainable. But I'll be useing some of my R&R time to visit some real reefs instead. I want to get dive certified as part of that.
Other than that, it's mostly just home improvements and occasional bit of fishing and hunting. Recreational aviation is a jealous mistress after all. ;)
