Title: Anyone know where to buy quality aircraft posters?
Post by: Frank N. O. on May 22, 2010, 10:54:59 AM
I think my walls need something nicer than white paint so I've tried to find some posters but the selection in my local supermarket is extremely limited. I tried to search online but I can only find a couple of planes are they are special prints of paintings or such and cost a lot! I have thought that the two big aircraft museums in DK might have some but I can't get to them atm so I wanted to hear if anyone knew where to buy some quality posters of photographs of aircraft that can be shipped to DK?
Aircrafts I'm primarily aiming for: Lightning (P-38, not the new one), Mustang, Spitfire, Starship (Beech Rutan), F-16 (especially if I could find a RDAF-one), Tomcat (especially Jolly Rogers squadron), Catalina, DC-3, Blackbird, Blac Widow II (YF-23), Avro Arrow, Valkyrie, An-225, 747-400, Minivan (Twin Otter -300), Greyhound (Grumman C-2). Of course I want some babe-posters as well so anyone know where I can find a pin-up with Panaca Jane and LaFawnduh? ::rofl:: Ok I just had to fire off a joke (no fire-pun intended), but I would love a nice scenic poster with them though. I tried to get my age-old HP printer hooked up and make a A4 mini-poster with one of the pictures poster here but the printer doesn't work that well anymore :( There was also that great white/blue AStar picture with the rainbow that could've been cool.

You can always try Sporty's online. http://sportys.com/pilotshop?gclid=CK3K7u_95aECFR5rgwodXzO5Kw
I've been doing business with them for 25 years now, and I have always liked the service I received. I don't know what their shipping costs to the EU might be. They may have a European shipping center (they used to) but I haven't looked at their website in some time.
Worth a look anyway at all the goodies they have.

If you get Flypast magazine they usually have a few in them.

If you go for Sporty's,then I don't think you need to worry, most of the Israeli piltos buy from Sporty's so the shipping price can't be that high...

A Hover barge tow picture is always fun (if you like rotary wings) (http://www.colheli.com/images/photos/ex76.jpg?action-print) You can purchase this really cheap ($2 plus shipping) at Columbia Helicopters http://www.colheli.com/colheli.html (http://www.colheli.com/colheli.html)
What I discovered accidentally a couple of years ago was that they had some other posters also. E-mail them and ask how many different posters they have. I think they have 6 (one of each of the photos in the photo gallery).

Thanks, all good suggestions and info and fast too |:)\
Rooster: Sporty's indeed have a couple of nice posters, and I actually ordered a catalog but that was just after they no longer sent them free of charge abroad, but they still sent me a nice letter in the mail with this news so indeed it sounds like a great shop.
Ragwing: :o ::unbelieveable:: ::eek:: ::loony::
I have no idea what a money order is sadly, a shame since if the picture was in high resolution (unlike the previews) then I'd love at least two of the posters they sell (the other one is the one with the white-topped mountain in the background).

Kind of you however it seems I need to do some more investigating with import taxes. I forgot that it's only inside the European Union that there are no import taxes. I also did this when I ordered Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook last year and it ended up 3x the price of the book alone. I tried to search the internet and from what I could see then under 80 DKK (roughly 13.30 USD) then there are no fees, but over that there are some fees but I can't find the appropriate catagory.
I look around Sportys but I can't find any mention of a european shipping center but they say there's an added fee besides the international shipping fee etc. so I need to research this some more.
I already tried to look at few UK pilot stores but there's nothing, and the one danish pilot store has even less from what I could tell.

Frank, either you can get it from Ragwing as "gift", therefore it should be tax free, or we can negotiate to make it go through me as well. Slovakia is tax-free on imports up to 150€ I believe. And then it is intra-EU.

Thanks for the offer but it's fine, I'll figure it out soon enough. It probably won't be the last time I buy something from the US so it's as good a time as any to figure it out, I just can't until tomorrow due to the holidays.

Frank,
Fabo read my post correctly. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
I have not heard back from Columbia. If I do not hear back later this week, I will simply place an order. Ragwing
P.S. This is the second print that Frank enjoyed. Nice shot of Mount Hood, Oregon (http://www.colheli.com/images/photos/ex79.jpg?action-print)

Do you want a poster of a Spitfire to start off your collection Frank? Got a free one in this month's Flypast and have plenty to pin up.

I checked the official tax site and a poster from Columbia won't go near the limit so it's tax/fee-free but I would like to know if they still even have them. I also looked at the site again and it struck me that they might only have a poster of the tow-photo and not the others.
G-Man: Oh yeah, definately babe-material, just look at the sun shining on those curves, and those gorgeous green stripes ;D The late-model Mercedes-Benz SL isn't too shabby either.
Oddy: Sure. I had a poster drawing of a Spitfire once, came from an english Amiga computer magazine for the flight game called Reach For Skies, sadly I don't have that anymore, or the 2 ft long model Tomcat from Action Force (aka GI Joe).

You say that like it's a bad thing? I just checked what a pre-painted 1/18 Tomcat costs, several hundred euros (I found it funny enough after searching for a picture of the Action Force F-14, or Skystriker as it was called).

I still have my old Transformers collection. I wish I had kept the boxes and not lost all the weapons! They're worth a bloody fortune now!

Yeah, childhood modifications can ruin a lot. I sadly also painted in my manual that came with F/A-18 Interceptor (classic Amiga flight-game with vector-graphics). My original Lemmings! Amiga-game (first version!) is however complete and in good condition. I also have the Amiga-version of Flight of the Intruder that also came with a paperback version of the original book, although I can't find the book.
