Title: Farewell to The Mighty Hunter
Post by: G-man on March 27, 2010, 12:04:08 AM
Today is a sad day, it was the last "official" flight of the Nimrod MR2 in military service. As some know, I flew as an "Air Electronics Operator" on them for 2,500 hours, mostly on XV254. I served on 201 Squadron and the Nimrod Flight Trials Crew. I went places in this world that we dont talk about, it was scary sometimes, exhilarating other times, I will probably never go again, It was a trip of a lifetime.

Incidentally, 201 squadron started out as No. 2 Squadron Royal Naval Air Service (2 RNAS) back in 1914. My Grandfather was a member of 2 RNAS, and the "G-man" clan was represented in the RAF continuously from 1914 till I left in 1990, both of my parents were in the RAF creating the continuous link, although my brother-in-law remained until 2002.

it wasn't a pretty aircraft by any means, but it's cool to think (well, me thinking, you knowing G-Man) that it was around every time history was made......

Nope never did, it was still being flown at Lossiemouth in the AWACs role---I was purely Anti-submarine and Electronic Warfare. I had the opportunity to go on a ridealong once, but turned it down...

Cool video about the Nimrod here:
