unfortunately, the USFS is doing a bad job in promoting the benefits of controlled burns...
Also, they are afraid they get out of control and then somebody would be responsible for it which would then hinder said individual from getting promoted. But yes, I am a big fan of controlled burns. We should do more of them and more "guiding" the fires instead of fighting them. Of course none of this works in Southern Cal, where there are just too many expensive houses.... Not sure what to do down there. I don't think that can ever be fixed.

Controlled burning does a HUGE amount of good -- just try hiking through any forest where every single tiny fire has been put out for decades. The downfall, brush and litter is often impassable -- my sister bought a house up against National Forest years ago, and I was totally freaked out when I saw the jackstrawed downfall was over TEN FEET OFF the ground!!! ::eek:: She got the quick version of how to fireproof her land.... ::banghead::
Any fire that starts in an area like that can't even be touched... so, yes, burning is a wonderful tool. Like Mike said, though, the FS gets so gunshy about defending it.... they get so vilified by a public that doesn't understand the outdoors, for one. I'm still amazed at how many people are born here, where fires have been igniting and burning for thousands of years, who still don't understand it's a natural phenomenon. ::)

Burning is a part of the eco system---everything in balance..I had some cool links but I recently switched to chrome and lost them---I will find them again and give a basic lesson in burning...
