Title: chicken and the art of flying
Post by: happylanding on May 22, 2006, 01:21:07 PM
Hello! I run into a book this afternoon entitled “why girls can’t throw” (the author is Mitchell Symons). And there was a reply to a question (could chicken ever fly and, if so, when did they lose the ability to do so?). Apart from our friend Chuck, would his brothers be able to fly? Maybe you already know the answer, maybe not and I was the only one wondering (apart from the author of the book....)….. Here it’s what I found “All chicken have wings and most (til here nothing new!), in theory can flight. But they weight so much compared to the wingspan (kind of W&B!), so they just can fly not high and not far”. So far, so good. But what about if they did not weight so much? There is no reply, just a tentative, I think. The author says that the flight ability is needed to escape from fox because otherwise they would be…sitting ducks...and he adds that sometimes the wings are trimmed, so that the cannot escape. What about a slim and not overweight chicken? Could he fly greater distances would he?
Have a nice day!

As much as I understand theory of flying a chicken cannot fly. It has no rotary wings. Now, one can say all other birds have no rotary wings ether but they fly. Well, according to my theory they fly just by pure luck. If you see a Spatz (sparrow) with his high weight but short wings. This bird actually is not supposed to fly. So there must be luck. Man can fly. In helicopters. ;D
And why girls can’t throw a stone is very clear. They can’t park a car into a slot ether ;)

Also the bumblebee (or hornet? I do not remember if it's the right word....the big fat bee with small wings) should not be flying. so, maybe you're right, the just fly by luck, they do not think and just go. but the same then, should apply to helicopters......And I'll tell you something about parking....it is not impossible...the trick is to find the right one (big space, nobody all around and no walls!): done this, no more problems: we can park! :)

You won! |:)\ I mean about the parking slot. Actually I do it the same way, but never told anybody.
Helicopters fly, I know that. The whole thing why they fly is so complex, I never understood. So finally I listened to one of my instructors who told me that it is senseless to explain it to me so I should believe him: helicopters fly. Well, and since then ….

Young man, as a helicopter mechanic you know perfectly well the "rotary wing" theory is all hogwash----helicoters only give the appearance of flying---fact is, they are so ugly that the Earth repels them... And parking, well I'll give you that one, I would rather shoot an ILS in a hurricane than try to find a parking spot downtown! ;)

Okay not going to get involved in the parking argument, but I believe chickens can't fly is they originate from game birds. Game birds aren't very efficient fliers in the first place and then breeding and feeding just made it impossioble. Although I have had a few chickens get high enough to claw my back up.

I don't know squat about chickens but I've done a little hunting and among game birds, chukars (now I woulda thought YOU'd known this)are the hardest to hit, the little bustards go like .85 mach and make 90 degree turns when you get the gun on them! :)

Doves have their manuevers down as well. :o
Don't ask me how I know this, but if you throw a chicken off a barn roof, it will do a pretty good auto-rotation... I guess that's kind of flying.

I think pre domesticated chickens lived liked pheasants in the edges of woods.
I imagine the ones than could fly well didn't get caught and domesticated in the first place... ;)

I suppose that the flying capacities of a chicken are enough to get up on a tree, which would suffice to get out of the way of most dangers. There are many other birds that can't fly either, that are not domesticated, so I think there's not necessarily a relation there.
But to get back to the subject of parking skills: Chickens are probably even worse at that than flying! ;D

(Don't ask me how I know) BWAAAAAHAHAHAHA-----how high was this barn you threw the poor damn chicken from? :D
And I'll grant you that doves are really fast and hinky fliers too. Course I'm not the best shot either Dad used to say I couldn't a bull in the butt with a scoop of rice---

Well, the barn is a bit of embelishment, it was a friends house. ::) And by auto-rotation I mean they plummet toward tera-firma and then at the last second there's a burst of flapping and feathers, the chicken alights the ground at a resonable decent rate (i.e. not terminal velocity), and doesn't seem the worse for wear.
Any landing you can walk away from... ;D

I can see that you have been interested in aerodynamics from an early age!
Ever watch" WKRP in Cincinnati" when Les Nesman Thought turkeys could fly and threw a bunch out over a crowd in a parrking lot----TOOOO Much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw, heck, Happy, there's significant debate about whether CHUCK can fly!
I've always loved that line from the "Howard the Duck" movie, when the guy tells Howard that he has millions of years of genetic backround in flying, and Howard says something like "Can you swing from a tree by your tail?"

You're right, it's tough to make a meal out of a dove or chukar.

Gosh, the dodo! How could I forget him?!?!? But if I'm not wrong (I remember I read something about him in history books) he was killed for the sake of being killed. If I'm not wrong the Spanish did not usually eat him. but it was a too easy prey. Sh&t, it's like shooting to the machine that makes clays fly....Easy shot, great waste....

I've head that too happy. And I can understand why. Floated on the ocean for a long time, find land your not familiar with. Get bored and pissed your away from home. I think I would pop some dodos just to have some fun.

Slightly off-topic, the story with Alice Cooper killing a chicken on stage was in fact done in the audience since a chicken was thrown on stage and he thought it could fly so he threw it up in the air but it plummeted into the crowd and that's how it happend. Would you believe he and Groucho Marx were actually friends?
Back on-topic, in Grand Theft Auto Vice City (ah I love the 80s) and San Andreas (not so great atmosphere) there is a small plane you can fly called, Dodo, it's clearly a Cessna 150 btw, both in wheel and float version, and sometimes the float-version just can't get enough speed to take-off, I think that's a glitch and not a deliberate programming though. In case anyone wonders then I am not at all a fan of violent authentic games like that, but I can tell the difference between real life and a game and I love the way you can walk, drive a car or bike and fly and listen to great music :D GTA SA even has a Firehawk! And a Harrier that can actually switch between vertical hoover and normal flight! Just too bad it's not possible to steer fully analogue :(
In Denmark we had an old bird species called Urfugl that was alive until just a few decades ago, I don't think it could fly either.
On the other hand, we got the Road Runner :D Meep Meep!

Chuckar, I can easily see your point of view. But i think that, even if it was to have fun, there was no.....effort! I do not know how to explain, but I think it was wicked to shot down every dodo just because they were easy targets. But, yes, I probably love animals too much, to worry about one that disappeared 4 centuries ago!! :D

Frank, that's cute and funny!!! so, if you can't fly, it's not your mistake, it's the airplane's!!!! :D :D You have beep beep in DK (you mean the enemy of Wyle E. Coyote? but he, he can fly? i always thought that that animal was an invention (stupid me!!!!). How is it called in real life?
BTW, do you guys know a way to quote more messages in the same single text?!?!?

No Worries happy, know a few die hard animal lovers myself. And sorry if I ever offend you, being a country boy over here in the U.S. grew up on hunting and fishing. And your right they shouldn't of just wiped them out but controlled the population like we do now.

Well, maybe it's just that today we have more knowledge....they neither knew that the world was as we know it is today, so imagine if they could think about destroying a kind of not flyable big turkey! I never went hunting, and you can see why, but I have a kind of worship for clay shooting and I often do it! On the contrary, I'll tell you that I went just once fishing with my dad: as soon as he was putting the fishes in the bucket, I was sorting them out, live and free again. He did not let me go with him anymore!!!! ;) ;) But to be honest til the last, I'm a strange kind of animal lover. I could never kill, but I disposed of my former dog....so you see?!?!?! ::) ::)

Well catch and release fishing is the best anyway. Get all the thrills of the catch and then let them go to catch them again. Although I must admit that I keep a few to eat every once in awhile. I'm also an avid clay shooter and try to shoot as much as possible. And with the dog, I'm sorry I've put a few pets down myself but it was always cause there was no other way to help them. And again sorry if I ever offended you about the hunting.

Oh my!!! No, my dear, do not worry, I do not get offended so easily. Hunting is a reality and I can't and wouldn't just close my eyes and pretend it doesn't exist and oblige who likes doing it, to stop! it would be insane! :)

I never understood that road runner was the name of the bird (of the species), a real one! I mean, I used to think it was road + runner all together, catching the meaning but not the fact that it could have existed a creature alike (stupid me!) :-[ :-[. I've just seen a picture on the net and read some info about it! Gosh, it's so cute! so, it runs but almost never flies....don't you ever think that maybe we could have used a lot more wings, instead of dodos, chickens and alike?!?!?!?!? :)

Post by: Frank N. O. on June 22, 2006, 01:07:58 AM
Ah, slight mistake here, I don't think we have road runners here, I must've typed that wrong so it was misunderstood. We do have birds that cross the roads and can't fly, but the are pretty birds, related to chickens btw, so you can recognize them and get ready to stop or avoid them if they are near. I think one of them is called almost the same in english, Fasan, fessant? Brown with fancy tailfeathers and a little too big to hit with a compact car without bumper-damage.
