Title: Fueling Tip for helpful pilots

When fueling your own airplane, which is perfectly acceptable to most line personnel, especially when it's your pristine Stearman... When handing the fuel nozzle back down to the lineman standing directly below you, please DO NOT let it tip downward. If not for some surprisingly quick reflexes, I woulda caught a slug of fuel in my upturned face today.
Also, while we really do appreciate the thought, please don't try to stow the static cable or work any other equipment on the truck without proper instruction. It just gets kinda tedious having to un-wedge the grounding cable from the reel axle.

AVGAS in the face really sucks! especially when you get it in your mouth! been there, not fun!! ::sick::

had my mechanic shoot Jet-A into my eye this summer. not fun either! had to take out my contacts.... ::banghead::

A mate of mine was draining 100LL for a fuel test out of a C-310 got some on his fore-arm and did not wash it off before going for a smoke...............you can guess what happend next luckily he did not burn himself.

never smoked much in my life, just here or there but it seems the AVGAS is way more dangerous?!? ;D

Hmmm, I'm not going to compare MSDS sheets right now, but Avgas is definitely the bigger fire hazard of the two. Much easier to ignite.
I know Jet irritates me much more than 100LL if I get some on my hands.

MSDS aside, I think Avgas is close to being explosive! Kinda scares the crap out of me....
Jet doesn't leave that weird white residue on your hands though....
Also, why is it that Jet smells so horrible on your hands but kinda nice when it's burned off in an engine?!?!? ::thinking::

Interesting, though, how we're soooo careful with 100LL, when it's considerably less volatile than MoGas... and look at how cavalier many folks are when fueling their cars. Scary stuff...

It's the high-end volatiles that makes autogas easier to start, and it's also what evaporates and gives it a shorter storage life. I still wouldn't go trying to spark it, as it's still pretty volatile. I think a great Mythbusters trick would be to show folks that jet fuel is really pretty tame compared to what they're putting in their cars. Maybe get at least a few of them thinking about how they act around the gas pump.

What a morning that was! Outta Jet-A, early start, crew swap, couldn't find the shipping papers, splashed in the eye... Good times... ::loony:: Why is it that I can't wait for fire season again?

So... ::whistle:: you obviously are showing symptoms of the dreaded Fire-Season-Itis...... a burning (no pun intended) desire to be dehydrated, and sweat profusely in some arid landscape while sand blows into your teeth, all the while picking the bugs out of the "food" you dug out from under the seat for your lunch.... ::whistle:: That jet fuel in the eye IS a lovely touch, by the way.... ::bow::

Yeah, I've got it bad... I'm not sure I enjoy fire season that much when I'm picking out said bugs, but I enjoy remembering fire season - or I remember enjoying fire season ???. Either way about Feb. I always start looking forward to next fire season, which means I really can't get a real, "normal" job (as if such a thing exists in helicopter aviation)...
You should have seen Mike's eye after the eau de jet-a got splashed in it - like this ::eek:: but red
