Title: A DC-3 just flew right over my house!
Post by: Frank N. O. on July 31, 2009, 03:40:56 PM
Wow, I heard a wild rumbling and pretty quickly deduced that this was no Cessna or Piper single, rushed out to the open garden door, and two seconds later, a DC-3 flew slowly, and lowly, almost right over my back yard! ::unbelieveable:: 8) ::bow:: |:)\
I know that for most here this isn't anything out of the ordinary, but it's the first time I've ever seen (and heard) one fly! Darn that I didn't have my camera ready, the (lack of) speed it flew with would almost have given me time to get the camera and turn it on before it was covered by the bushes and trees nearby.
I'm pretty sure it was this one (and not just because it's the only one in flying condition in Denmark): http://www.dc3vennerne.dk/flyet.htm

There is something really neat about the sound of an old radial. :)
Speaking of fly overs, Ft Lewis (GRF) has chinooks based out of it, and we would usually see them a couple times a week going over to Yakima Firing Center to do training. Since the sand trap incident of the bush years happened, we haven't seen them in a long time :(. But alas last week I saw 4 blackhawks and a couple of chinooks on their way over the mountains. A nice sight for sure.

When I was in high school, I remember seeing a Beech Starship fly directly over our neighborhood. I though that was impressive. This was probably in 1994 or 1995. I later saw another one at Brown Field south of San Diego in 2002. It was on the ramp loading up a band who had chartered it. Never caught the name of the band. Was too busy being awestruck by an active Starship within arm's reach.

I'd love to see this mythical bird. Hell, I'd settle to talk to one on freq.

I think there's only one or two flying. Beech tried to buy back and destroy all of them but two owners instead bought every part they could for them and told beech to ::complaining: off. Last I saw a pic of one was flying chase for Spaceship One

Oooh the Starship, I'm pretty sure I saw one from my childhood home porch in the late 80s or early 90s and since the danish Donald Trump actually owned a Starship and since we lived south of Copenhagen where he lived and the ship banked towards Roskilde Airport which is the main GA airport near Copenhagen then it's highly likely. Although tv also showed a guy who'd spent years building a LongEZ a few km south of us but I'm pretty sure it was a Starship I saw and not a LongEZ, while they have a similar shape then there's a clear proportional and size difference, plus the the twin engines in the back on the Starship.
Ian: Does a Gazelle really have that distinctive turbine-whistle in real-life as it does on tv? I'd love to see a real Gazelle, it's one of my top-favourite helicopters, if not the top-favourite and it can even be flown by a civilian, I doubt you can do that with a Greyhound, I do wonder what aircraft would be cheaper in service. Did you see the 5th Gear tv-clip with Tiff Needell racing around a racetrack in a Porsche vs. an ex-RAF pilot in a Gazelle helicopter?

I think there are something like 4 or 5 flying. I remember on the flight team our planes got stuck in an airport between TN and IL en route to a competition (I was driving the van so I wasn't involved in this escapade). Anyway, they happened to land where a starship is based as the weather was closing in. The owner came out with his family for a flight and talked to them before he left. They were actually still there when he came back. He told them that if he'd realized they were stuck he would have taken them all on a ride with him. They got a close look at it, but missed being able to fly it by such a small amount.
There's also a starship that beech donated to the staggerwing museum in Tallahoma, TN if anyone is going by there, that's a way to get a close look at one anyway.
I still don't remember where this starship was that the flight team guys saw, but I think there is another one based in Alabama, want to say birmingham.

Hahahaha, this wouldn't be the CW forum if we didn't switch topics, but this is actually quite on-topic since it regards seeing a great aircraft in person so no problem at all, in fact it reminded me of seeing a Starship myself, and it's one of my favourite planes |:)\
