Title: Logic Puzzle
Post by: G-man on March 30, 2009, 11:43:52 PM
I figured I would share the following puzzle with you. Unless anyone gets it sooner, I will post the answer in a day or two. It is pretty obvious once you get it.

Shown above are four men buried up to their necks on the ground. They cannot move and can only look forward. Between A and B is a brick wall which cannot be seen through. They know that between them are four hats, two black and two white, but they do not know what color they are wearing.

In order to avoid being shot one of them must call out to the executioner the color of his hat. If he gets it wrong, everyone will be shot. They are not allowed to talk to each other and have ten minutes to fathom it out.

After one minute:

Q: Which of them calls out?
Q: Why is he 100% certain of the color of his hat?

This is not a trick question.

There are no outside influences nor any other ways of communicating. They cannot move and are buried in a straight line. A and B can see only their respective sides of the brick wall, C can see B, and D can see B and C.

Good luck

2) how are the hats being held on?
3) are they eligable for parole?
4) what country are they in?
5) are they all heli drivers?
6) are they the ones who done that bucket work in greece?
7) did they get to see their lawyers?
8) have they ever flown a Huey?

1) Playing the bagpipes within 5 miles of someone with good hearing.
2) Conjealed Haggis fat
3) Nope
4) Scortland
5) Hell no--they are too ugly to be associated with helicopters---the helicopter has to be the ugliest in order for the ground to repel it
6) Nah..
7) who do you think worked out the deal
8) only an ugly blue and white one...

Kinda tough huh---y'all will kick yourselves when you know the answer..

::rambo:: You would have been shot then, if there was only 10 min time!  ;D

I figured it out too, I think! So now you know who's the brain in this whole Chicken Wings operation....  ;D  ::whistle::  ;D

ok im going with:
1. A
2. Since none of the others have called out he knows for certain he has a black hat. D can see c and B and the colour of their hats so he does not shout .....or some thing like that.

Right train of thought but NOT A...try again---you're almost there.

Its got to be D since he knows there are four of them and its a 50/50 chance of being right with the colour of hat

I picked each guy individually and tried to think like he would. Came to the conclusion it must be C.

He know the hat in front of him is white. He think: If my own hat is white, the guy in my back would see 2 white and would know his own is black. The guy in my back don't say a word so my hat must be black.

Well, I would have been shot I guess. Maybe under more pressure (like the threat of actually being shot) I might have been able to figure it out...  ::drinking::

Looks like cotejy figured it out though. Makes sense....

What I am better at though than figuring out logic puzzles is in "reading between the lines"!
Is it me or is my brother taking a stab at my intelligence?
And is G-Man using every thread in here to make a reference to the "Blue Team - vs - Red Team" rivalry?

I kind of wonder...... ::thinking:: ::sulk::

Cotejy got it.. ::bow:: ::bow::

Mike: As for the blue/red thing--nah, just bored. Hey, you should read your brother the animal quiz I sent you---I bet he will only get one answer if that.

Here is another quiz for y'all...answers later:

1.  How long did the Hundred Years War last?
2.  Which country makes Panama hats?
3.  From which animal do we get catgut?
4.  In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution?
5.  What is a camel's hair brush made of?
6.  The Canary Islands in the Atlantic are named after what animal?
7.  What was King George VI's first name?
8.  What colour is a purple finch?
9.  Where are Chinese gooseberries from?
10. How long did the Thirty Years War last?

The answers are NOT what you may think..

G: One of the options, the most obvious one is 3 263 442. What do I win? I did not use google, you know, my internet is broken.

G-man, I want more! I don't know where you take those because I love those things but the one you send out, I never saw those before.

Fabo, I don't know about "options" -- sheesh -- I've been trying to figure out this number puzzle since he posted it!  I finally figured it out, only to see (as usual!), that I am WAY behind you!!!    ::banghead::

I agree....  3,263,442 is the next item......    ::)

Well, theoreticaly you have an infinite number of possibilities of combining different mathematical methods to come to a number given several parameters such as the number itself, its predecessors, its position, etc etc etc. Plus you can have conditioned operations such as every sixth number is divided by six. Or position dependent operations such as exponentiation by correlation of position itself, and remainder of basic division of position plus number itself to position minus number itself et cetera et cetera.

My math teacher told me there are other options in such things.

Wow.   ::unbelieveable::

That's a lot of thinking!  Gee, I had the numbers written on a piece of scrap paper by the computer...

Then the cat jumped up to take his bath, and covered up all the numbers except 6 & 42....

and I immediately saw the connection between the two.   Is that Meow-thematics then??!?   ::thinking::
