Post by: TheSoccerMom on March 18, 2009, 11:41:51 PM
A longtime pilot and author on mountain flying is the subject of a wide search in the northern Rocky Mountains.

That is incredibly rugged country.  May it be a good outcome, soon.   |:)\

Various pilot groups are sending out a notice that Mr. Imeson has been found, and was killed.

I haven't found any details through the news media yet.

It was over 25 years ago that an instructor of mine gave me Sparky's mountain flying book and stressed how important the contents were.

RIP, Sparky...  this is a sad day for many people.

Man, I'm sorry to hear it.  I bought Imeson's Guide to Mountain Flying around the same time as S-Mom.  The lessons he taught me in his book have been the basis of much of my professional flying, so I take this as a personal loss...

OK.  Lets all grab our beers, face West, and make a toast to Sparky!   |:)\ ::bow:: ::drinking::

It appears that he was landing in some uneven terrain in the main valley...  in a flatter area before the foothills rise up to the mountains.  It looked like he was on one side of a gully.  The 180 flipped and there was a fire.

Even in open terrain, with no snow right there, it took two days for the plane to be spotted.

There's a lot of speculation now about engine problems, etc., but of course no one knows at this point.  It's sad and sobering when such an experienced pilot (over 20,000 hours), in his own airplane, can come to this point.

Too bad, just more proof that experience does not guarantee immunity, we all clamber into our britches one leg at a time, no matter how long we have been doing it.
Sad day.
