Title: Could use some positive vibes....
Post by: BrianGMFS on September 18, 2008, 11:32:21 AM
Spent most of yesterday in two hospitals with my girlfriend. Rose started having blurred vision in her left eye on Saturday. The eye became painful by Monday and yesterday morning, I took her to the local ER.
After a blood test and a CAT scan, they thought she might have an infection behind her left eye. Since the Local hospitals ear nose and throat doc was on vacation, she got shipped the 40 miles north to Burlington for further tests. She got another CAT scan and a very intense eye exam.
At that point it was determined there was a mass behind the eye that might be a tumor. She got an MRI next. After that they decided to admit her to the hospital. She will probably have surgery today (Endoscopic) to at least obtain a biopsy to see if it's the big C.
Rose has a cancer history in her family. Her mother died from lung cancer at age 48 and her brother passed away last year at age 46. Rose turned 52 two weeks ago.
I'll try to keep you guys posted as things go along. I sure could use some prayers, crossed fingers, raised glasses... What have you. Seems like a black cloud has been following me lately with my current state of unemployment and now this.
Thanks for letting me vent this.
Brian

Sorry to hear that, my best wishes that things will go good. Sadly I don't have any good news to tell from here which is why I'm not really commenting on my situation anymore.
The only positive thing was when I fired up FSX for the first time in a while and tried the new scratchmade Cessna 310 and when I lifted off from Copenhagen Airport I felt a rush of happiness, like all the worry was gone, and if a sim can do that then real flight should be awesome in the original sense of the word.
Greetings Frank

Gosh Brian, that really bites. My heart goes out to ya and your G/F.
I had a Cortizone shot in my left hip yesterday. I am pretty tender and sore today in the hip area where the needle went through about 7cm of flesh and muscle into the joint, but it appears to have done the trick. I am completely off all pain meds today and I do not have any joint pain to speak of from the arthritis. Being nearly pain free for the first time in years is a welcome relief!
I just wish the doc could have given me a local or a sedative before doing that procedure... talk about HURT!!! ::eek:: That was so bad I was actually cursing in Russian while it was happening! I never knew I could do that. Hehe.
Good luck to you and yours Brian, and God Bless. |:)\

Just got Rose home. She has what they are calling a 'Mass" extending from just behind her left eye back through her sinuses. She had a Biopsy done this afternoon and we will get the results on Monday. Once they know what it is they will start looking at a treatment plan.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Having had to deal with cancer in the family I know that the waiting for test results and not knowing is one of the worst things you can imagine in this game..... :-\ :(
My thoughts are with you guys !!!

Good luck to you, Brian. Cancer can be a real bitch. Sometimes its simple, like when my father had a simple tumor removed from his wrist. Othertimes its much worse. My wife lost her mother at age 54 to cancer just 18 months ago. I personally have lost 2 grandfathers and one grandmother to it.
I will give you the words of my paternal grandfather, who battled lung cancer for 11 years before he succumbed to it. When asked if it was worth all the surgeries, radiation therapy, and chemo, he said, "It sure beats the alternative". Grandpa Chuck (yes, that was his name!) had a lung removed in 1984, and he considered every day of his life after that to be a gift from god. I only wish to take his positive attitude with me as I continue my life into its latter stages. |:)\

Sorry I've been MIA for a couple of weeks. Being unemployed means the cable bill didn't get paid until today. No cable.. no internet. I've been going through withdrawals big time.
Anyway. Rose got her biopsy back Not cancer!!!!! ;D
She goes in to have the mass removed tomorrow morning. Not sure on the recovery time yet however.

Not so good news... The went in today and just did a deeper biopsy. It seems that they are now sure that it is a tumor and probably Lymphoma. The big C. However once they know what they will be dealing with after the pathology report comes back and they will know how to treat it.
Rose is home but sore. they went in from the inside of her lip into her sinuses. Should know more next week. Not the greatest news but the doc are confident that this will be treatable.

Well, the roller coaster is on the downhill slide.....
Rose got the test results back. It's cancer. Her doc is afraid that it may have spread. The only good news (if there is any) is that is is of a type that responds well to chemo. They are being aggressive with it. At 9:30 tomorrow morning we'll be at the oncologists so Rose can get a head to toe CAT scan, Bone Marrow biopsy, and her first dose of Chemo. Gonna be a long day. The hospital's PET scanner is down for repairs but as soon as it's up, she's getting a PET scan as well. Gonna be a long winter. Me only working part time and Rose on half pay from her temporary disability policy... When it rain's, it pours bricks. ::banghead::

Brian and Rose,
Thinking of you both---have no clue what to say---my mother in law went thru similar and is doing OK right now--2 years later. I sent her the following when I found out--Give the following to Rose--it may bring a smile on an otherwise shitty day:
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed that she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “H-M-M, she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did and she had a fun, fun day. :D
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YEAH!” she claimed, “I don’t have to fix my hair today!” ::whistle::
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. Have a Good Day!

Just an update...
Rose had her Marrow Biopsy and her first round of chemo yesterday. So far she feels fine. The steroids they had her on already shrunk the tumor enough that she can see from her left eye again. The chemo will really knock it down. The doc's are VERY confident that this can be beaten fairly easily with just chemo as long as it hasn't spread.
Rose get's her PET scan on Tuesday and a second dose of Chemo on Friday. Then she has 3 weeks off until the next round.
