Title: Medevac crashed into hospital
Post by: rtrhead71 on May 29, 2008, 03:49:50 PM
I just got a text from my bud up in Michigan.  Evidently a helo just crashed into Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.  I have no particulars other than to say that they are evacuating the top floors now.  I have to head to NM right now...so I won't be able to update.  May our prayers be with all of those involved and their families at this moment in time.

Pilot and pax both got out--latest rumor from an eyewitness is that the tail rotor hit an anteana while the pilot turned on the roof.

Thanks G-Man...just got off the phone with my bud.  That's what he got too.  Way to pick me up on this one...any landing you can walk away from is a good one right?

Yep---heard it was an FAA checkride with FAA inspector on board--all rumors at this point.

Assuming this is correct--I would hazard a guess that the pilot did a clearing turn because the FAA was watching him----normally I would not do a turn in a confined area. Again--all speculation at this point--at least they got out.

The news articles says that one of the persons aboard was an FAA inspector, and they were "practicing approaches"...

Sounds like a scary time for the folks inside the hospital, also, one woman said she saw a rotor blade go by her 6th floor window...  yikes....

On the positive side, the hospital restored lost power quickly and apparently managed the chaotic situation quite well...  and the pilot and inspector escaped the fire....  all in all a good outcome......

not a good thing for the medevac industry....

They had a few accidents lately, and most of them fatal. You all knows waht that means in the longrun . . . . more regulations for all of us!  ::banghead::

All too familiar as the guvmint becomes more and more involved in our daily lives thinking they can save us from ourselves by passing more laws  (insert disgusted smiley)

Wait...I thought an oxymoron was two words put together that mean the total opposite?  ::)

On  a brighter note, I graduated from Embry-Riddle couple of weeks ago and am up for my commercial check ride in 2 weeks!  WOOHOO!!!  Now...anyone know of anybody looking for a low houred pilot with a BS in Aviation Business Administration with a concentration in helicopter flight operations?  ;D

Thanks Mike...here, hang on to this resume until that day comes.  ::whistle::

Mom...I'm doing that right now.  They call me 'pops' down here for some reason...maybe it's my AARP patch I have sewn unto my jacket?  :-[

Fabo...I graduated with a guy that is from Slovakia.  Go figure...fixed-wing guy, so we didn't chat it up much...but he was ok.  ::loony::

Oh...and thanks btw!
