Title: Checking out for a few weeks...
Post by: Rooster Cruiser on March 17, 2008, 03:54:46 PM
Howdy Friends,

Things are gonna be very busy for me in the next few weeks so I will not be posting.  I have given notice at work and I will be going to Simuflite in DFW for the Citation V/II type rating.  I am doing this on my own dime (ouch!   ::eek::) but I am getting a corporate discount through a 135 operator.  After that I will be offering my services as a contract pilot on both the Citation and the PC12 until someone offers me a full time job.

I will check in every now and then, but I will not have much time for anything besides study after March 25.  For those who haven't enjoyed a simulator school, its kinda like getting a drink of water from a fire hose! :o  Once I am done in early April I should be able to post on a more regular basis.

Mike and Steph... keep up the great work! ::bow::  I look forward to the new strips every Tuesday!

RC

And when you get that Citation rating.... My company might be hiring... We've got one Citation 560 (Encore) two 560XL's (Excel) four King air C-90's and a Challenger 604. We might have something that fits you.

This sounds like a good a thread as any...

I guess I'm not so much checking out as checking in, since I haven't had time to talk for a good while anyway.

Very long story short, looks like I'm starting ground school with Pinnacle Airlines (they do some Northwest Airlink and Delta Connection contracts with a HQ in Memphis) Wednesday.   I'll be flying either CRJ-200 or CRJ-900 Regional Jets for them out of  MEM, MSP, DTW, or ATL.

Should be able to check back in around towards the end of April or beginning of May, although might be able to stop by for an update if I get some spare time at various points.

ooooooh, I really like that Mustang vintage, and I'm sure the V6 has enough power for me as well, especially since I've never driven anything than a fwd, except the two test-drives in a 2007 Subaru Impreza 1.5R model which was AWD. I especially like the Bullitt GT version from 2001 8) Funny how that used the same larger rear sidewindow from the first gen SN95 (as did the 2003 Mach-1) but the normal models used the curved smaller one from the facelift. The SVT Cobra R is a beast, but actually designed to work, it scored ok in a track-test together with a C5 Z06 (early 385hp model) and Viper ACR model (with ABS). I believe it lapped between the Z06 (1st) and the ACR (3rd). And there's just something about a supercharger, although I prefer a twin-screw unit since it's the simplest and most effective mechanical supercharger type there is (simplest in that it doesn't need a seperate oil system, intercooler or blow-off valve and uses less drive-power so no need for a off/on drive-system and it delivers smooth boost at the entire rev-range).

Edit: I was sure it was a V6 since the wheels were so small (diameter, both tires and rims) but it has a GT badge, what version is it?

Oh and again, good luck and have fun (I think I already said it in the chat a while back but if not then here it is again)  ::wave::

Actually Frank, its a V8 under the hood.   8)  I gotta go really easy on the accelerator when pulling away from a stop or I'll spin my tires every time.  Lots of torque!

Yep..I got a ticket once in mine, (old style 5.0-V8), not for what you think though..  ::thinking:: Back in the 90's I flew for a Sheriff department--got off shift at 2:30 Sunday morning and was driving home.

Got stuck at a red light..opposite a local PD patrol car. The light went green and I decided to have "fun"---I did NOT break ANY traffic law, but did go from 0-45 in about 3 or 4 seconds. Did not squeal any wheels or smoke the tires, and kept the speed below 45, (but only just).  ::whistle:: ::whistle:: Sometimes you just got to have fun.

The patrol car spun around and followed me ALL the way home, obviously running my plate, which came back to the SO address, (a safety measure that all cops or other federal employees have so that their address does not get broadcast over the radio).

I arrived home, parked and went inside to bed. Next morning I had a ticket on my car for "not curbing my wheels"---I lived on a very slight slope.. I wrote a check for the amount of the ticket, but left the "pay to" section blank, and went in uniform to the PD station and gave the check and ticket to the desk Sergeant and expressed how pathetic this ticket was, and he could pay the check to charity or the city--which ever he felt appropriate. The check was never cashed.

To fill in the blanks---some police departments do not "get along" with the county sheriff departments. Especially this one--we had a brand new 407, that flew an average of 6 hours per night, and they had two beat up ex military jetrangers that they could not afford to fly. ::whistle:: ::whistle::

I'm glad the Law enforcement comunity in my area isn't like that. The cops are so far apart that when one calls for backup it could be a local cop, state trooper, deputy, game warden or even a motor vehicle inspector that backs him up. The professional courtesy also included EMT's and Firefighters (career ones anyway) because we were the ones coming to help the cops if it went south in a real bad way. We all took care of each other.

PS, By the way Rooster, nice Stang... I've been a Ford guy for 20 years.... I just wish I hadn't blown the transmision in my Taurus SHO... That was a FAST car

How's it going there?

I've been through a week and a half.  Gotta really memorize stuff now...   another week and a half of ground training, then orals, then sim training (for another couple weeks).  All told, about a month left.   ::silly::  It's 70 days from starting training to completely finishing all phases.

Figured I could break enough to say hello.

A bit off the topic, but 4 airlines shut down operations last week, and Champion Air announced this will be their last month of operation.  I must say I was happy to see Skybus go, but not the rest.  Mesa caused the demise of Aloha.  Mesa would be another company I would not be sad to see depart.

Shut down or announced ceasing operations during the last 7 days:

Aloha Airlines (a primary airline in HI, same day shutdown announcment),  ATA Airlines (west coast to HI service and military charters, same day shutdown announcment), Skyway Airlines (USAir connection flights, advance planned shutodwn), Champion Air  (owned by NWA, charters with 727s... intentional draw down by NWA), and Skybus Airlines (thank God they're gone, same day shutdown announcement).

Industry whispering is that Frontier Airlines and Lynx (their commuter) may  be next if fuel prices stay this high (and since refineries have cut production to increase fuel prices, looks like they will).  Mesa Airlines lost a large chunk of their Delta Connection flying because of their completion schedule (they were second only to Skybus in horrid working conditions and have been unable to find enough pilots for their airplanes).

I just got back this evening from my checkride, and yes I passed it!  I now hold ATP for both single engine and multi engine airplanes, along with the Type Rating for the CE500 series.  Man!  Talk about a tough ordeal!   ::sweat:: ::sweat:: ::sweat::    I swear, I have never encountered anything in my life that has challenged me like "The Box", as these full motion simulators are called.  Ground school went fairly well, but once I got into that sim my inner gyros tumbled and I had the damnedest time of my life trying to learn how to ignore my inner ear and attempt to learn to fly an airplane that isn't an airplane!    :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Anyway, I passed the ride along with the 135 check ride.  Tomorrow I have one last school to get through (Citation SII differences) then it will be time for you know what!   ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking::

There just happens to be a Hooters across the freeway from my Hotel...  Maybe tomorrow I will look into cab fare from one to the other!  Hehehe.   8) 8) 8) 8)

Well I left DFW yesterday morning around 9:30AM local time in White Lightning (I reckon I might as well name that Mustang I bought).  I drove straight through to the SoCal desert and walked into my home around 0215 last night.  That made for an enroute time of 18 hours and 45 minutes over a distance of 1314 miles.  Whew!  Now I remember why I got out of driving a truck!  I couldn't handle doing that day in and day out anymore.

I just did the math and I realize that even though I stopped 6 times for fuel and pit stops, I averaged 70mph across my route!  Not bad when I consider I had to deal with fog, rain, and thunderstorms in central Texas, then drove through a horrible dust storm at El Paso Texas.  Winds at El Paso were 50-55mph yesterday afternoon at rush hour and the visibility was often down to 1/4 mile or less.  I struck one tumbleweed and one empty cardboard box that were blown across the road at me and I had no room to avoid them.  Fortuneately, my car suffered no damage.

Glad to be back home.  Now comes the hard part...  finding contract work.   ::sweat:: ::sweat:: ::sweat:: ::sweat:: ::sweat::

Ryan, you just hang in there and keep hitting the books.  With any luck you won't be as adversly affected by the sim as I was.  I have since found out that a lot of high timers have big problems with the sims since they do not move or feel quite like an airplane.  I have heard and read of reports of people literally getting sick in them, and I can understand why!   ::sick:: ::sick:: ::sick::

Do keep us informed as to your progress.   |:)\ |:)\ |:)\ |:)\ |:)\

Oh yay!  Sim sickness!

I start sims Friday... we have our phase check in the "GFS" trainer tomorrow.   I've been spending plenty of time over there in the last week.... 14-16 hours a day at the company HQ.   Been sitting around some today relaxing a little,  going to study some then dinner and bed for a good night's sleep (hopefully!)

Guess these sims have "panic buttons" at all the stations so you can shut it down if you're getting sick... to hopefully prevent a mess inside the sim anyway.

Here's another update on me:

I am going to be flying contract on a Citation II air ambulance in the SoCal area.  I'll be starting in another week.  Some other contract offers are starting to trickle in too...

My last day flying the platypus is next week.  Boss has decided to sell it instead of hiring another pilot.  Too bad.  It was a pretty interesting gig while it lasted.

So what are the terms on the ambulance contract?  I note that you mention other contract offers, so are you thinking of not staying with the air ambulance gig for too long?

Too bad about the platypus... although it was sounding like that's where it was going anyway.  Is he going to hire someone to fly his little plane still?

Chukar, congrats back to ya on your first 135 gig!  ^5  I still vividly remember my freight doggin' days.  Single pilot IFR, old equipment, no GPS, no HSI, just 2 OBS and an ADF!  Worse, I was flying outside radar coverage which meant I had to shoot full approaches everywhere I went!  Plus I was flying much of this stuff in winter weather, so icing and contaminated runways were always a concern.  When it wasn't snowing, I had to be on the lookout for thunderstorms.   ::banghead:: ::banghead:: ::banghead:: ::banghead:: ::banghead::

One of my freight dogs was a C402 with one worn-out prop governor that refused to stay where I set it.  Just the slightest bump would push it +/- 50 RPM so I had to re-synch the damn engines about 20 times in a 45 minute flight.  I eventually gave up and let them stay out of synch.

Damn good experience overall.   |:)\ |:)\ |:)\

I've flown a few airplanes like that.  Never fun.  Most of the airplanes here have more then or close to 20,000 hours on the airframe.  Definately fun.  One step closer to flying the fancy stuff though.  Congrats on the citation, an inspiration to all of us young pilots ::bow:: ::bow:: ::rofl:: ::rofl::

Minor update.

2 more sim sessions (counting tonight, once again going until 3am) before the checkride.   Different instructor starting last night, this one is a brit actually and is also a line pilot,  figured oddball might be interested in that.

Also, the FAA has apparently further reduced the hours needed to get a commercial license from a part 141 school.  This new (to me) instructor reported he had a student recently (remember, this is in training for line flying for an airline) with around 160 hours (the number I wrote down was 168).  The guy's sim partner had  around 190.

20,000hrs is a lot for a Navajo, or any other piston engine light twin.  It's not a whole lot for a turbine airplane or any airplane maintained to part 121 standards.  I know of a few airliners with over 100K hours on them and they're still in service!

Sorry there soccermom.  I should have guessed it was a joke.  It is fun flying these old girls.  Lets two gear problems, multiple pumps going out, and the other day a vor got stuck.  Got to love it.  I guess I'll learn about the turbines when I get there.  Have fun with the citations rooster.  And Mom tell the guys I said hi.

I'm due out on 6/23..........back to LKV Oregon 8)
How many pilots does Amflite have based in OAK?    There were 33 when I started in 1983 but I was #2 in seniority within 2 years.  If things are progressing about the same, you should be burning some kerosene within 120 days--hopefully, the airplanes will get progressively nicer too! |:)\

Have fun in oregon.  We only have about 20 pilots at this time.  Trying to get some more.  I think upgrade time is about a year if you stayin oak.  We're mostly chieftans.  Only about 6 turbine runs and around 15 piston runs.  But I don't plan on staying in oak if I can get an upgrade sooner.  But your right the turnover rate is still high.  Don't know whats going to happen with the industry being the way it is.  Might get a few more longtimers.  If your not leaving till june I need to get up to santa rosa one of these weekends to grab a beer.  If I don't good luck this season.

I am now an "employee"  and not a "contractor."   ::)

Checkride was yesterday, went well.  Going in a minute to work on getting my ID.  New uniform should be later today as well.

Loft today, then the FAM flights tomorrow and maybe friday.  Cat II training is saturday.

Here's the route structure:
http://www.flypinnacle.com/site/our_company/route_structure.php

Once I'm online, I could end up flying anywhere except those routes going out of ATL (different a/c in ATL vs the rest of the system).  If you see a dot that goes near where you are and would like to grab a bite or the like if I end up there with a layover, drop me a line.

Now I'm a contractor instead of a wannabe.  I start flying revenue service on Friday.  Time to make some money and recoup my investment in my type rating.

Baradium, congrats on passing and good luck to ya at Pinnacle.   |:)\

I deadhead to DTW tomorrow and then start OE Wednesday.

Overnights are  Pensacola,  Springfield, MO and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Springfield is the only real decent length overnight, but if anyone is near any of those airports I'd still love to say hi.

I go to a fair number of places other than the above mentioned ones during the trip, but the only other one that is much more than an hour is MSP (4 hour layover).

I am finished with IOE.   I was signed off yesterday and am officially a line pilot.   I am going to be spending a lot of time in detroit.   In fact, I'm in DTW for the whole holiday weekend with a 99% chance that they won't have anything for me to do... anyone around?

Hey I only live an hour from Detroit. What do you mean you have nothing to do? There's the Redbull airraces going on! Now get out there and scream and yell at airplanes going fast. Sigh. Some people have the best jobs in the world.

Congrats on the new job! ::drinking:: ::drinking:: ::drinking:: |:)\ |:)\ |:)\

Hey if you're gonna be round Detroit more often, we can hang. There's the Henry Ford Museum there. It's been all fixed up since I last visited. They've got everything from Trains, planes, and automobiles. Also has Greenfield Village. Really good visit. And make sure you've cleared your schedule for the August 9-10th weekend, as that's when Willow Run is hosting Thunder Over Michigan. I am so there!!! Last year they had about 20 B-25's. I missed it  :-[  Well not this year!!!

It's hard to get out much without a vehicle.  ;)

I got someone to release me until tuesday so I could head to ATL, but then there was a mixup and I have to turn around and go back north tomorrow.

I go on reserve tomorrow at 1pm.

I have 90 minute callout on reserve (that's from call to when I'm checking in on the computer, already past security).  Any time I'm on reserve, if you'd like to try to get together, I'm more than up for it, but be advised that they could actually call me to go on a trip at any time.   Non reserve days are possible as well, but I might trying to head out of town on non reserve days to take care of things, so wouldn't know until closer.

I'll be on reserve until 2200, then 1100-2300 tuesday.  Wednesday I have reserve as well, but it ends with a trip to Ottowa, Ontario and an overnight.

The 1st-3rd of June I'm on reserve 1100-2200, then I have my moving days for the next 8 days (will use those to get a vehicle to DTW among some other things).

For the rest of the month my reserve periods are all 1100-2200 in the following blocks (days of the month in June):  11-15;  19-23; 27-30.

This is the problem with being on reserve:  I'll probobly be sitting around a ton twiddling me thumbs in detroit, but I still have that 90 minute window I have to maintain.  So if you were to drive the hour to DTW, there's no guarantee I'd still be able to do something by the time you got there.  Even if they only call me one out of every 5 days (and it could be more often than that, I don't know how it is yet), there'd be a fair chance they could call me on the one day that you were going to meet me.

The best thing would be if you could had a reason to be in DTW anyway, becuase then it wouldn't be so bad if I got called 5 minutes after we got together.  Of those days I'm on reserve, some are weekdays and some are weekends.  Any day you'd like to give it a shot I'm all for it.   You have a PM with my cell #.

Just forget about what I'm "scheduled" to do, because it changes too much right now (haha!).

They took the trip away for later this week so I'm just listed as on reserve for the next... month...    ::silly::

At least this hotel has wifi...
