Title: Is it spring yet.....

... Winter storm to impact the north country Tuesday into Wednesday...
... Winter Storm Warning in effect from 10 am Tuesday to 7 PM EST Wednesday...
The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Winter Storm Warning... which is in effect from 10 am Tuesday to 7 PM EST Wednesday for Vermont and northern New York.
Snowfall accumulations through Wednesday evening are expected to be 6 to 10 inches across the Saint Lawrence River valley... 8 to 14 inches across the Adirondacks of northern New York... 10 to 15 inches across much of Vermont and the Champlain Valley of New York with locally higher amounts possible in favored higher terrain.
Snow will overspread northern New York and Vermont Tuesday morning into early afternoon and persist through midday Wednesday. Snow may be heavy at times Tuesday night and may briefly mix with sleet over southern Vermont. Thereafter... wraparound snow and snow showers will continue into Wednesday evening in northern Vermont... the Adirondacks and the Champlain Valley of New York before gradually ending after midnight.
In addition... brisk northwest winds will develop and increase to 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph during Wednesday. This will create blowing and drifting of the snow causing poor visibilities and hazardous driving conditions.
Persons across the north country should take the necessary actions and prepare for this upcoming winter event. Avoid any unnecessary travel. If you must travel... let someone know your timetable and the Route you will use. If you feel your roof may be vulnerable to heavy snow loads... please take precautionary action. Also... remember to check and clear outside vents to prevent the possible build-up of Carbon monoxide gases.
Please stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... your local media... or go to www.Weather.Gov/Burlington for further updates on this weather situation.

It's some screwed up weather back East alright--I've been waiting to pick up a new Cessna 206 out of Erie PA for 2 weeks--too much icing conditions to even think about it and I've gotta be in Aridzona next week for spring training so I'll probably lose that ferry job >:( It's pretty much like spring here in NORTHERN CA---temps in the 50s, lots of sunshine, trees blooming (eat yer hearts out snowbunnies) :'(
Thats the good news------Bad news was a vet bill for 645 dollars for spring checkup for my dogs today but that's how ya keep em healthy------RIGHT? Don Yan

Not everywhere in the world is as cold as Perth: I quote:
"What is "Fire season"? FIRE SEASON is the time of year when weather and vegetation conditions combine to make wildland fires more likely within a given area.
Statistics show that, on Mark Twain National Forest, danger of wildland fires increases from February 1 through May 15, and October 10 through December 10."

Hmm, I think the three days I spent stranded with aeroplane on the Isle of Wight because I decided to employ the better part of valour and turn back from some nasty weather counted as my "winter blues" ;-)
It was drop down gorgeous up there today though. Windsock looked like it'd been nailed to the post, flat calm, high clouds just the right size and spacing for amusing myself dodging and diving and ducking between them. Got up so high that air/ground practically laughed at me when I told them where I was. Watched fast jets with cool fierce-sounding call signs way down underneath me on their way to the practice range (the reason a/g had asked after me), then went down low instead and bimbled about looking at the castles and ironage earthworks that surround our little airport. Trailed along the coast where the downland sweeps up frot he sea and frightened a paraglider about to launch himself at me. Wagged my wings at him in apology and cleared off out of his way, dawdled over the saltmarshes, peered at the progress on the ne runway at the next airfield over, did a PFL at a handy sandbank, then wandered home to sit on the wing and watch the sun go down.
Can't ask for much more from a spring afternoon really. :D

It must be a funny feeling to be in a Tommy-hawk with jetliners flying underneath you :D

Not airliners... These boys...

We've got an air-ground bombing range next door. The airfield I learned to fly at was actually inside the danger area. They're pretty GA friendly and we co-exist very well most of the time.
(And get a cracking local airshow as a "thanks for not whinging about the noise too much"...)

I think we got a bit to go here in Fairbanks: Friday Night Mostly clear. Lows 15 below to 30 below...warmest over the hills. Light winds in valleys. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph in valleys...20 to 35 mph over the hills with areas of blowing snow.
However, the good news is: February 28, 2008 Sun Rise / Set: Actual Time 8:04 AM AKST / 6:03 PM AKST Length of Day 9h 58m Tomorrow will be 6m 47s longer

It smelled like spring here yesterday <wishful thinking smiley>... even though there was still lots of snow all over the ground, and Lake Michigan is still frozen as far as you can see. We walked out on the ice quite a ways yesterday. Pretty awesome sunset out over the ice.

HAHAHA, guess what, same here!!! Tomorrow should be up to 6 inches, heavy flying snow (that phenomen when snow drifts over the roads and thus making them even more slippery) and temperatures between +3 and -5 celcius. Happy spring ::rofl::

Well it's March 25th so officially it is spring. As my brother said just after we visited our mom today, the snow mustn't have heard that :D
The pictures were taken just a few minutes after arriving so as you can see it was one heck of a ride. The main roads were also totally covered in snow so no stripes etc. And no, Bridgestone Turanza ER30 195/60-15s aren't good snow tires, luckily, I know how to drive slow and smooth and unlike my brother who came a few minutes after me, I didn't have anyone tailgating me.
The last picture is looking towards the exit of the area we live in, standing in front of our place, the place we lived in almost 10 years (and were my dad passed away in the christmas of 98) is two doors down the road in the same rowhouse-block as we live in now.
Temperature is about +0.5C so the snow isn't quite slush, but not dry and firm either so it's about as slippery as can be.
Frank
P.S. Hmm, maybe I should've posted this in Life Thrue Your Camera instead?

No, that makes me want to emigrate! Ah, to not have to swap tires 5+ times a year at unknown times, to not have to stand in the frost scraping ice off the windows and having the engine running all the time to demist the windows inside, to not get fried when accidentally turning on the seatheating in summertime (every single vehicle car in DK has seatheating as std. the last many years and I dislike the feeling even when it's freezingt so it's just one more electrical thing to go wrong for me). And best of all, Cheap Fuel!! (Yes I heard the 5+ USD/gall price over CNN radio but it's still way cheaper than here!) The only problem: How to get a green card.
Frank

Maybe you could try to marry Mary? ::) ;)
Oh and btw American fuel is far less octane as our home one, so I suppose that with comparable car you would get bigger consumption. Does not make driving equally priced though.
Title: Re: Is it spring yet.....
Post by: Frank N. O. on March 26, 2008, 09:40:52 PM
Hahahahaha, very funny. On a serius note then USA and perhaps other North-American countries as well, use a different octane rating than Europe (which use the RON std.) so US regular which I think is 87 isn't as far from 93 octane RON as it looks, it's almost the same I think, of course 80% of the cars in Denmark use (read: need) 95 octane RON. Besides, even if I could get a Mondeo mk2 over stateside then I'd plan on leaving the euro-spec engine in Europe and using a complete California spec engine (just a normal 2.0L 4-cylinder Zetec-E engine, not the Duratec V6 model) anyway so the slightly lower octane rating wouldn't be a problem. A scandinavian/german engine probably wouldn't be well-tuned to the weather in California or such anyway. Plus the Mondeo in Europe comes with engines down to a 95hp 1.6 Zetec-E variant and those are quite cheap.
