Title: "A 1st Time for Everything"..... I guess?!?
Post by: TheSoccerMom on October 09, 2007, 03:57:54 AM
Many years ago, I had this idea that it would be WAY COOL to live in a hangar...  you know, surrounded by tools, dried oil drips, and that familiar smell of dust settling on a warm engine.  (And maybe, just maybe...  hearing little bits of what the aircraft say after dark....)

Well, in the vein of "you'd better watch what you wish for", I just paid the first rent for my "new" digs....  a place over a hangar.  Crikeys mates!!!   ::unbelieveable::

After fire season, I learned I needed to move, and, after looking at some not-so-happy-looking spots, I lucked out and found a nice place, on an 1800' dirt strip.  It's small, but nicely laid out, and I'm kinda excited about this.  The airstrip looks to be in pretty decent shape, too.   :)

So...  wish me luck for the next month or so...  I think I am going to need it...  what with hating to move!    :(
With any good fortune at all, there'll be room in the hangar for a Beer Fridge....    ::drinking::    ::whistle::      ::rofl::

Now...  d'you suppose any of the neighbors will notice if a White Minivan just HAPPENS to drop in, from time to time?!?!    ::whistle::

OKOKOK, lemme know when moving day arrives, I'll arrive with my ole pal  (remember him?) and we'll give ya a hand---I think---You're gonna hafta have some decent beer on hand and someplace Rod and I can crash after we perform slave duty all day---a couple of cots in the hanger will work 8)

COOL !!  ::unbelieveable::

I am jealous!

When are you moving?
Will you be able to use the hangar or is somebody else using it??

Hee hee!!   :D

The hangar seems to be a bit full of stuff, both aviation- AND non-aviation related....  a mechanic I know used to keep his Stinson there, but it wasn't there the other day, so am not sure if he still comes and goes out of there or not.

Man!!  I wish I had an airplane!!!!  Arrggh.  Oh well, at least I can always go out at night and pick rocks....   :D

And Airtac, tell ya what, the BEER part we'll work on, and no worries as to the moving part...  that's why they invented lighters and gasoline....!!!  ["WHAT pile of stuff?!?!!"]     But -- the VISITING part sounds perfect!!   ::drinking::

Besides, I won't get to leap off this cliff for a few more weeks...  have a short job to do, so hope to start moving when I get back from that.

(btw....  aren't I too OLD to be doing this?)   ;)

Ah, that reminds me.
When I was picking up empty bottles for Southwest Canners at the airport in Big Spring TX, I noticed an old WW2 hangar sitting empty on the mostly abandoned side of the airport (the bottle company had taken over some space on that part of the field). Right next to the aforementioned hangar was an old style tower.

I often fantasized about being able to buy the hangar and the nearby tower and making it into an aviator's dream home. There was plenty of office space inside the hangar, which could be converted to living space. The hangar itself used to house bombers, so there was plenty of room for anything I'd ever be able to afford. The tower would have been a treasure in itself, and I was thinking about a circumferential sofa unit on top, so's I could watch airport traffic from the lofty perch. OH... I guess it'd get a wet bar, too. I only considered a tower hot-tub for a little while, but I figured it'd be kinda tough to maintain at that height.

By the way, Hangar 18, from the movie by that name, is in Big Spring, and only a few hundred feet from the old tower.

I'm down for the fly-in.  Let me know and I'll "borrow" 92Dawg for the weekend and show y'all some REAL short field takeoffs!  Incidentally, a case of beer should probably fit right behind the front seat, so I can contribute there  ;)  Congrats!

Aww, thanks for all the great wishes and notes!!!  (I think I will NEED them...)   :D

As soon as I can get a few pictures, I'll, er, post a few.  Though, um, it kinda looks like a long, skinny, plain old dirt field.  (D'you suppose there IS something wrong with all of us?!?!?!)   ::whistle::  hee hee!!   ;D

["Heyyyy, babee....  wanna come over and see this GREAT dirt field?!?"]  <--------   ::loony::

I guess we'll need to have some manner of wild and crazy hangar party at some point!!!  It sounds like a great excuse to me!!!  And you bet, we'll have landing contests, takeoff contests, short field contests, flour bombing contests...  and then, we'll go OUTSIDE the hangar!!  AH!  What comraderie and silliness!!   ::drinking::    ::rofl::

And, No, Airtac, I wasn't maligning your skills at manning a lawn chair, I was just going off my personal experience....!!   ::rofl::

Thanks for all the grand laughs!  You guys always make me smile.   :D

I've been re-installing my previous programs after having transferred gigabytes and gigabytes of files (recording video from gameplaying really takes a lot of filespace! I love the one from FSX with the air-race challenge though). I got the latest version of Google Earth and looked around for updated and images. I already think I spotted my best friend Chey's white RX-7 at a parkinglot at a place she sometimes shops at (verified by her and and some 3D model comparisoms of the car's shape from above which is clearly different from other white cars) and then I took a look at mom's place and if it doesn't look the I've found the second vehicle of someone I know on the map! At least it looks like a minivan.

WOW  Frank!!   ::eek::

Too cool!!  Yes, that IS the main fire base for the BLM (Bureau of Land Management), and that IS a Minivan there on the concrete pad.  Actually, that is the main Fire center for the entire U.S....  when I first worked there, I think there were 300+ employees, and now it is over 600!!  Good grief..

Cool picture!   ::wave::

Congrats, S'mom!  The nice thing about living at an airport is there are no noise complaints.

Now, as for your ride to work, we've still got that beautiful Husky on the ramp over here...

Wheee hee, sounds good!  I'll take you up on that, and all the other airplane offers from the Coop lately, too...  Airplanes for all my friends!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, some of my buds are calling and complaining, "How the hell am I gonna fly in for a brewski, this doesn't meet my accelerate/stop!"   ::)  Waa, waa.
I can't win, I guess.   :P

I did learn today, there is NO ONE around that doesn't like airplanes...  kinda nice, like you said...  I guess there was one nasty lady but she moved away.   :D

I think there is an Ercoupe and a 172 on the field, not sure where the Stinson went...  I'm gonna have to figure out who is who and who flies what.   :)

Here's a picture of the Pepe' International Airport, looking west....

<measuring with thumb at arm's distance>

I believe I have landed in shorter strips with da Platypus.  I know for certain I have landed on rougher strips.  Now can you PM me a lat/long so I could check on the viability of the idea of bringing a bunch of yer friends to a party???   8)

Hey Smom,
"accelerate-stop distance"?  HAH! I only worry about accelerate-crash calculations ::banghead::
If R/C can cram 8 or 10 of us in the Platypus, we won't hafta worry about engine out stuff (one engine=50% less chance of engine failure=no worries) ::whistle::

We go into rougher strips sometimes too... but I'd venture her's is still probobly shorter than what we touch.   (so come on, what *is* the length on that thing?)    The shortest strip we go into with the 1900 is 3000ft.  (Selawik, AK   Ident:  WLK , does not have an ICAO identifier).

You know, I seem to remember that an AN-2 has similiar takeoff and landing performance numbers to a supercub.... that's one way to cruise to work in style.  Of course, they also cruise at the speed of a supercub with probobly 3 times the fuel burn...   but I've seen them for sale for cheaper than super cubs too.

I like the idea of the airport view,  enjoy!

Nice idea of the An-2! By the way, is there any Antonov, or specificaly 2, in opertion in the US?

There's a bunch of AN-2's flying in the US under the Experimental rules. Along with a bunch of various Yaks. The FBO in Mom's home town (In Vermont) is an importer of Eastern European aircraft, specializing in the YAK-52 and Yak-12. They had an AN-2 for a while as well.

By the way Mom, what's the Identifier for your new place.... I've gotta at last virtually buzz the strip in Flight Sim  ::rofl::

Hahaha, that was a good one Brian, I don't think it's in FS, although then someone could make it together with the Minivan, like those classic scenery packs with a classic bi-plane and a small farm-house with a grass-strip. I can't test it in FSX though since I've used both my activations so now with a new computer, I couldn't get it to re-register and I've used up the test-time, and just when just the CPU alone made FSX a lot faster, and I haven't gotten my fast RAM yet, which is also twice the amount as before (2gb instead of 1gb).

In all seriousness, I'd love to participate in a fly-in, when you guys/gals are drinking beer and hanging out among the strippers then I'll take good care of the planes, I've always wanted to have a whole airport for myself :D

There are a number of them in the US.  There's a guy in Anchorage even who apparently collects / buys and sells them.   Guess he has a dozen and a number are always for sale?

Well, GEE....    ::)

I've been away too long.  Sorry to be behind on all these messages...  the airport I THINK I will be moving to is a dirt strip in SW Idaho, all of 1800 feet long... though it says 2500 feet, there is a stealth ditch which I would bet could EAT any unsuspecting airplane who tempted it....

I can't even recall what it looks like...  sheesh, maybe I need to look at that website...  I've been on the road, flying, since I found it, so really have no idea when I will be back home to even start moving...  ahhh, yes, Aviation sure is great...   ::bow::    what other job guarantees you don't even know what MONTH it is?!?!?!?!?!?!?   (Uh...  November, right?!?)   ::loony::

If heaven ain't a lot like dixie,
I don't wanna go,
If heaven ain't a lot like dixie,
I'd just as soon stay home,
If they don't have a grand ol' Opry,
like they do down in Tennessee,
just send me to Hell, or New York City, it'd be about the same to me.- Hank Jr.

The cold beer is in the fridge (   ::drinking::  ), and anyone who does a low pass ( I hear all the nieghbors LOVE this.....  a typical weekend conversation seems to include the following:  "Hey, did you see who buzzed us?  Is Chuck in town?")  ---  NO KIDDING on the name...  a guy named Chuck used to live here, and flew a pretty Stearman out of here.......) anyway, if you meet the previous criteria, you get an automatic invite to stay and imbibe!

One day while staggering up the road with what seemed to be my millionth load of junk, I saw one of the neighbors do the PRETTIEST touchdown..  in an old C-172...  right AT the threshold....  Aw, man!   ::bow::

I vowed then and there, to only try to sneak in here at NIGHT....  I imagine if they ever saw my landings, I'd suddenly be looking for yet ANOTHER place to live.....

::loony::

C'mon by for a cold one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey S'Mom,
hope youre getting all settled in there at  your new place. Moving is such a pain... really makes you realize how much "junk" you have. Hope you have some time to kick back and relax now. Sounds like you have fun neighbors too. ::wave::

Ha ha, didn't call anyone to help, but NOW....  the "call" will stay out there for any and all to drop by, oops, I mean, drop IN, for a cold one!   ::wave::

It's slowly turning into "home", well, as much of a home as I ever manage....   ;D    Usually that just means somewhere to set down the sixer and prop up my "Low Flying Aircraft" sign.....

Nice to see all the activity in the Coop!!  I'm trying to catch up....   ::type::

I really hope it is a small world in aviation since I'd love to meet you people here, especially as a pilot since you guys/gals must be great to work with  |:)\

You know, I think I found it in FSX (Flight Simulator 10). Btw, is there a big drop-off downhill after one of the ends?
As you can partially see however there aren't any buildings at the strip, but there is a hangar-like building and parkinglot textures a few hundred meters to one side, left-side if looking towards the drop in the runway direction however looking at Google Earth then that seems to be just a random autogen scenery and not authentic building-positions.

Gee, good question Frank...  I've only walked down the road (that parallels the runway) twice so far, and each time it was after sunset, so I am not sure about the drop-off.  I don't recall that, but it was years ago when I got to fly out of here, and that was one time only.  I'll have to investigate!

It's a pretty day here today, but the wind is blowing hard and it's still in the 30's F.  I may wait until the sun comes around and it warms up a bit!  I still have plenty of unpacking to do indoors.

I'm so glad your Mom had a special day!  That's great.   :)

Later...  the hangar-mom...   :D

It's to the point where I'm happy when it's above zero  (-20 C).

Although I do have to say, seattle at 40 degrees feels colder than fairbanks at zero, so it could be a case of that if you have humidity.  ;)

Welll-lll-lll, since I was sitting here in my bare feet and tank top, a 30-degree day with a stiff wind seemed COOL enough to me!    ::whistle::

But hey, I'm an Idaho weenie now...  no winters here....  it's been a few years since I was USED to 40 below and 8 feet of snow....  oh yeah, wanna try learning a whole new vocabulary for being cold?  Try living in a tent at tree line in NH....  now THAT will make you appreciate being comfy and warm and cozy.

Ah Fabo!!  Too good!!   ::rofl::

I worked with a really cool woman years ago -- she spoke fluent Russian and spent a lot of time over there, teaching and then guiding tours, etc.  She was a "character" -- in all the good ways.  She was just hilarious.   :D

One time when she got back to the States she broke out one of the many bottles of vodka she had (she never packed stupid things, like CLOTHES), anyway, we were all pestering her to no end, to teach us ONE phrase, in Russian, that would be... let us say, indispensable.

She brightened, and said,"Oh, that's easy!"  and then proceeded to make all 10 of us, rehearse this phrase over and over..  and over..  and OVER....ad nauseum.

We had it DOWN..  just perfect!

Satisfied, she got up to walk away and we all protested, "Hey!  Hey!  What does it mean?"  and she grinned and said "I want sex on the floor."   ::unbelieveable::

Fast forward to about 5 years ago, when the Russian smokejumpers came to the USA to jump with us, compare gear, parachutes, and operations, etc., in a neat exchange program......  there were three really great guys, whom we all loved dearly.

I simply had to see if my old friend had taught us correctly, so once I got to know how funny they were, I just HAD to try it out.  At the end of a briefing, before we went flying on a jump for them, I spit out the long-buried phrase....  HOOO-WHEEE!!  WOW, she IS a good teacher!!!!!!!!

 ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::      ::rofl::     ::rofl::    ::rofl::     ::rofl::

Dude, I don't think anyone other than her and I are reading this pa Russki.  Plus, we do not have a Cyrillic keyboard.  I can kinda piece stuff together from Cyrillic writing, but its easier for everyone else if we keep doing it on regular keyboards.  Then everyone can have fun going to their favorite translation program and try to figure out what is being said.  Hehe.

Doing some ferry work for a South African company this winter, they are going to buy at least 20 airplanes this winter/spring from all over the US.
Just got back from Indiana yesterday with a 2004 172XP, nice airplane but when I got to North Platte NE the icing forecast over Wyoming forced me South around Denver to Las Vegas.   A 16 hour trip home turned into 23 hours flight time (7 hrs IMC) headwinds over Colorado gave me a 61K groundspeed at one point ::banghead::
