Title: Good Luck Charms
Post by: Mike on September 27, 2007, 05:08:41 PM
I just noticed something.  :o

Airtac has a little statue of Mother Mary on his dashboard.
Soccermom has "Pepe" who goes with her everywhere she goes all summer.
G-Man has that little Hawaiian dwarf on the dashboard from what I've seen in the pictures.
And Panaca Jane has fuzzy dice as well as a sticker that says "Jesus is my homeboy".

Do the rest of you have good-luck charms in your aircraft (or car) when you're on the move??
Or is this just a "fire-thing"?

Let's hear some stories!!

We keep Rosary chain on mirror in our car ever since I can remember.

Gosh, I gotta admit the truth here, I don't really have a Mary (the holy one) statuette on my panel----that just came from a country western song----"I don't care if it rains or freezes--long as I got my plastic Jesus--sittin' on the dashboard of my car" ::cowboy::

I do have a highly confidential good luck ritual that I do at the start of job which involves peeing on all three wheels---among other things that I won't tell about. (cause then I'd have to kill ya)   Forgot my fuzzy dice in the last employer's airplane, going to get more soon, makes me nervous without them.

I have considered my mother-in-law's picture though, figured it might keep the other evil spirits away >:D

All kidding aside, why is it most pilots are kind of superstitious---could it be that we know something our passengers don't want to hear about ::eek::

Pepe' surely (QUIT CALLING ME SHIRLEY!) has been good luck for me, but I also have my trusty little P&W pin that I wear on whatever hat I use all fire season....  it's been around for years...  been almost lost in a few washing machines...  and the paint is chipping off....

And, it became the topic of conversation in Pokie this summer, when a certain know-it-all mental midget who was assigned there, insisted on telling all the other pilots (as I taxied out for a fire), that the beloved White Minivan has GARRETT engines......   ::loony::

They about died in silent laughter, and every day after that, they asked me, pointedly, "Hey...  How're those Garretts running?!?"  They laughed even harder when I showed them my lucky Pratt & Whitney pin.....  heh heh heh...........

LOL, that joke never gets old :D and it was said by a man with origins from Denmark (both Nielsen's parents were from Denmark).

When my brother drove a truck, and the church bus some times to England and Switzerland then he had a Garfield plushie on the dash looking out the windshield. It was there for so many years it got very pale, but it's still around some 20 years and counting. I myself got a Garfield plushie that's lying flat-out, I usually have in the pc tower-case over the powersupply so he has a warm cozy place, and where I can keep an eye on him :D But that's not a good luck charm, more of a nice companion knick knack. I also got a small Alf (tv-series from the 80s) clung-plushie that my dad gave me many years ago, I usually have that hanging on a cord near my memorabilia board as well. But again, that's not a good luck charm and more something to make the place more personal and cozy.

Somehow missed this one.....

My "little Hawaiian dwarf" is actually a "travelling gnome" called Timothy.... he has velcro on his feet so he can switch helicopters with me.

Of course nobody has seen him from the front till now......he has been flying with me too long and had to stop off at one of his favourite places..

Hey, speaking of good luck charms, an old FS jumper had his best buddy "Fire Bear", a cute little teddy bear that went absolutely EVERYWHERE with him..  on every fire, every jump, every demobe...  he always had his cute little bear face sticking up out of his "dad's" leg pocket on his jumpsuit.

(And, for a while, some rowdy guys made a lot of less-than-proper jokes about what went on between Pepe' and Fire Bear, after hours, in the DC-3....  Hmmm....  Pepe' does NOT kiss and tell.......)

But, in the wild and hairy fire season of 2005, during a particularly nasty blowup on a big fire in Nevada, alas, poor Fire Bear fought his last battle..  he was burned over in the big blowout and the base was never the same....  my understanding was the entire jump base wore black armbands when they learned of his untimely demise.......  Fortunately, his dad and the other jumpers were able to make a run and get out of the way.

To Fire Bear!  (he really WAS cute)   ::angel::

I have one, it's a little stuffed cat an ex gave me right before I started flight training.  Been riding in my flight bag ever since.  Not really a good luck charm, just sort of a knick knack I guess.  I know other banner guys who have a certain hook they like to use (they're pretty much all the same, but some guys have one that they pick better with, superstition more than logic)  and plenty of pilots have pics of wives and girlfriends in kneeboards and instrument panels.  Guess we all have just a little superstition in this line of work, huh?

It helps, man.   Sure easier than reading the flight manual and actually KNOWING what the hell we're supposed to be doin'......

Uhh....  "Cross 17 DME at 11 thousand and maintain 200 or greater for me..."

"Uhm, uh, OKAY, let me just hand this over to Pepe'......"  It works every time!

I had a buddy (on the ground) say that on a handheld once -- I announced in the pattern, and he thought he'd be a wise guy, so said "Looks like a crosswind...  better hand it over to Pepe'!"

Of course the spotter and I cracked up, but the rather somber lady manning the unicom didn't find it so funny, I guess.  She was in a bit of a HUFF, wanting to know WHO was PEPE'.   HEEEEEEEE.   ::rofl::

. . . because . . .

YOU LAND LIKE A GIRL !!!

HAHAHAHA!!!  :D  :D  ::wave::

Didn't get to say it all season since we only met once  :'(
ahhhh.... good times....good times ..... Maxwell and Mathews would be soooooo proud of me......  ::wave::

BWAAAAAAAAAAA  HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh MAN, yeah, you got THAT right!!!  Good heavens, can you imagine THIS, I talked to both of them today and they were actually TOGETHER....  George was picking up his horse from "prep school" in Montana, and somehow they ended up with cold ones in hand at Maxwell's....  I told them if ONLY I had known, I would have at least warned the Idaho State Police......   ::eek::

 ::eek::

And, hey, they have OBVIOUSLY been spreading the word....  Hmmmm...  When I moved to Twin, (when I saw you?!?   :D ), a guy at the tanker base came up and formally introduced himself...  all very polite...  and then a SEAT pilot who had been in Pokey yelled, "Oh CRAP, it's HER -- she lands that thing just like a GIRL!"  It was pretty funny.   ::rofl::

Hugs!  S'Mom***

I have a good luck charm, but it's more an everyday charm. the difference is that if I go flying I must be sure I've it with me. that's the medal of the dog I had when a child. it's mounted on a bracelet and everybody laughs when noticing that it's shaped like a bone, with the name of my pet engraved. Any case, I'm quite superstitious, and part of my actions involves recolletting things from the ground, such as nails, staples and coins which are - at least in my mind - bearers of good luck..... :)

Don't ya just hate those people who will not let you have fun on the radio.....S'mom, I think I told you about me and "HF" messing on the radio in Hawaii when the tower called traffic in my 10'o'clock and I called "target visual--switching to guns"---That s my favourite on to do. Of course I am still waiting for the day when tower calls traffic--"57Z, you have a Fokker in your 2 o clock, turn behind that traffic", and I can respond...wait for it...

'Tower, visual with the FOKKER in my 2 o clock"...One day...

Back to the charms---some of you who have followed my year will remember the "smokey bear" I took flying with me in "Lucy" in the "Smoky national park"--Talk about irony...

I have a sorta strange good luck charm... it's a bullet, as in a fired from a gun bullet.

Way back when I was a deputy game warden, a poacher shot at me and my partner (the dude was a really bad shot and missed, thank God!). I guess he was upset we wanted to arrest him for poaching- go figure... ::)

After the arrest and trial, I went back to the scene and found a tree that he hit a few times and dug out the bullets. I gave one to my partner Randy and kept one for myself. Whenever someone asks, I tell'em it's the bullet I dodged, so I don't have to dodge anymore.

Reference to "you throw like a girl!" as a derogatory remark... as they aren't supposed to be able to throw as good.  Generally something said to boys.

They say she lands like a girl as if it's that kind of derogatory remark, but she *is* one so no matter how she lands... she lands like a girl!

Likewise, it's the same type of joke if you tell a girl "you throw like a girl!"  You're not saying they throw like the stereotype, it's that they are a girl, so any throw is a "throw like a girl."

Frank, that's not a dumb question -- it's just SUCH a dumb JOKE!  There's so much testosterone poisoning (the GUYS' description -- honest!-- NOT mine) at work that, any time you want to insult someone, you say they do [whatever] like a GIRL.  It's just perfect -- I mean -- it IS a great joke!

To get to the root of the reason WHY would take a 747 full of psychiatrists, I am sure.  But, in the meantime, the BS continues...  the jokes and pranks continue...  setting people up to get nailed continues...

And, an interesting side note here, I've noticed that men who can't LAUGH at this kind of loose, joking BS are almost always the same guys who DO have some nasty prejudices.  It makes for a fun "test"!!!!!!!!!  That's why so many of the jumpers like to pimp other people at work, to get them going, and see what they'll say.....  women as well as men!  I actually had to tell one lady this summer that we were all JOKING about what the guys had to do in the airplane, on the way to the fire...  they were baiting her pretty good...  and she thought we were serious!  She was actually getting in a huff.

I actually used this joke to see if people had the same twisted sense of humor last year,
i.e.:
I'd tell a guy "go over to that Otter pilot and tell her she lands like a girl..."
if he got all offended. . . . I knew he wouldn't fit in.
Keep in mind we all knew Mary thinks the joke is funny (remember all the pink control-lock references and more....)

In all reality, I have found in my CFI days that women actually have quite a good feeling for planes or helicopters. (although a few lacked the mechanical knowledge to back it up)

You KNOW they all talk to eachother in the hangar, right?!!?

Last year they all had boost-pump problems as if they discussed how to mess with us.

This year they all came back with problems with their sliding doors. Janes won't open (broken internally) and 498's almost fell off....
Just wait 'till Lucy and LaFanduh joins them . . .  >:D ;)

They DO all talk to each other, I am sure of it.  That's why I always pat the ole girl on her nose and give her a hug...  I don't want her to whine about me to the other girls at night when they meet again for the winter.     :o

The mechanics all rolled their eyes last fall when I took the Minivan back home..  within minutes of it being pulled inside the hangar, there were 10 guys crawling all over her, and when I had finished telling the head guy where everything was, he said "Well, see ya!", but ---  I had to go give her one last Hug.  He stood there and shook his head, and all the other guys were razzing the HELL outa me.    ::loony::

You know, it can sure be lonely sometimes, being nuts, but I'm pretty used to it anymore.

Yep... I can think of a few. A "bullet" is used to slide o-rings into place for example and a "bullet" is used as a paragraph indent marker or to make a point.
Does that help cure your disease?  ;)

BTW- To SoccerMom: Me and Randy and our kids are glad that SOB missed too! I can tell ya, gettin' shot HURTS!   ::knockedout::

Y'know, I think they do talk to each other and conspire to mess with us.  One day my airplane's airspeed indicator failed due to dirt and other crap in the pitot tube, and on the same day the same problem happened to a coworker of mine less than half an hour later!  We've also had a couple planes with starting difficulties, all traceable to the impule couplings on the magnetos.  (Bad batch of mags, or so the theory goes.)  And yes, I've been known to pat ol' 92Dawg on the nose from time to time, especially after a hairy trip home through reduced visiblity, around thunderstorms, and through teeth-jarring turbulence.   Usually don't get all three on the same day, fortunately.

Oh, and FB41, that's just treating a symptom.  The disease goes merrily on!

EDIT: Thunderstorms, not tornadoes.  Jeez, I am going nuts.

Being nuts isn't lonely, you've got me and the voices we hear (you know the ones I mean)  ::eek::

I had the same thing happen in the Platypus where I had a bunch of dirt and crap in there.  But it wouldn't die on me until I would go IMC in below freezing temps.  Then the moisture would cake up inside the Pitot on all the dirt and the Pitot Heat couldn't melt it, so there I would sit and watch my airspeed indicator go to Zero on both sides of the cockpit.  Talk about an attention getter!   ::eek::  I actually replaced the Pitot thinking that was the problem, but it continued.  Finally my avionics guy thought to blow out the pitot system and he recovered a pretty good pile of dust that had worked its way into there.  After that, I went ahead and bought a Pitot cover and I now use it religiously!

I don't know if I'd call it a "Lucky charm" but I always wear a Eagle necklace.  Have since I was a teenager, shortly after my grandmother died and I ended up with one.  My current one is about 15 years old (on the 3rd chain I think) and is an Eagle in flight clutching a small diamond.  Wife had it made special for me.  Like I say, I'm not sure it's lucky, but it's always there!

I always wear a silver bracelet when I'm on a fire, have ever since my rookie year.  Not only is it a totem, but when the situation gets too hairball it heats up and "bites" my arm, signalling me to re-evaluate our position and what we are attempting in the face of fire behavior.

I skimmed through the thread, so I'm not sure if he covered it, but I always felt better sliding for Mike when I knew I had IG Joe as my spotter.....

HA HA! ::rofl::

No, I didn't mention the GI Joe yet!

Didn't think about it. Thanks for remembering!  ;D
He might still be with that aircraft. I have a hard time removing a good-luck charm from the aircraft. Feels like it might be bad luck.
Did you know the GI-Joe story made it into a book?
It's in the "True Pilot Stories" book which, of course, we have to have in our online store at well....
